A ceiling fan in the master bathroom?

My master bathroom gets warm in the summer even with central air and I thought a 36 inch attractive ceiling fan would be a great addition. Right now we put an small fan on the countertop in warm weather and I would love to not have it there.

My husband thinks I am nuts, he says no one puts ceiling fans in bathrooms. LOL

We live in Texas and ceiling fans are the norm here for most living areas and bedrooms.

So, tell it to me straight, do you think this is a good idea or is my husband right? We are thinking of selling in a couple of years if that makes any difference.

I live in the DFW area and we are putting two in our bathroom. My mom first did it in her very over the top bathroom and so I will follow. Cannot tell you how nice it is in her home to have cool air blowing when you are so hot in the summer. We have a long vanity area and two small fans will be perfect. There are so many very elegant fans with lights...you will not regret it.

I think that if it works for your lifestyle, do it. I personally would not put one in the bathroom. If the bathroom is hot during the summer, do you have AC vents in the bathroom? Do you have a vent fan to exhaust as much steam as possible? There may be other things you need to looks at but a fan may be the cheapest alternative.

Even if you put in a fan and decide to sell your house, you can always replace it with a nice light fixture. Make sure you find a fan that is rated for wet locations. These are usually fans that can be used outdoors.

We have had ceiling fans in our bathroom in 3 of our last houses and think it looked just fine. The first one DH put up was going to be a 50+ fan but then we decided that would be too large for the room so we went for a 42 inch. Our present bath is not large so he installed the small one that was originally in our family room when we purchased the house. Think I would die without it, sometimes use it even during winter months. Don't worry about how it will look, go for it and be comfortable.

No attic access? No way to get up there at all? Not a ceiling scuttle hidden in a closet some where?Agree with Joe, we can give guidelines to install the fan, but the wiring is the issue. Do you have a plan for wiring the fan? Probably the easiest would be to extend the wiring from the bathroom ceiling light. Attic access would make it a heckuva lot easier. But barring any out of the ordinary attic framing, extending the ceiling light circuit could be done with a couple of fishing tapes. Is that an option? And then...there are wall exhaust fans. Again, depending on location, electrical would be an issue.

Thank you all for your comments. The bathroom is a lot of whitish (large hex tile floor/large format tile shower alcove, and a white (long double sink) quartz vanity counter/also top of pony wall). The vanity is oak. All the fixtures/vanity lights are brass (aged). There is a window at the far end. I thought just off white walls might be too much white, although I guess I could change that with wall "add ons". We live in a country setting, the house is a shrine to mother nature : ), so that is where the green comes from.

What is above the toilet area? If you have access to any attic above the bathroom, look at Fantech fans. They have a very powerful motor remotely mounted with just ceiling grids (small like the size of a can light). Because the motor is hidden away, the fans are practically silent. I installed a 2 inlet system with one in the shower and one above the tub. Both have small integrated lights in the center. the amount if air they pull is amazing. If you cannot mount someplace above the ceiling, they also have motor units that wall mount outside, like up under the eaves. I couldn’t be happier with mine. I have halogen lights but they now have LED available.

We have one in our master bath and I love it. It makes things much more comfy in the summer when drying my hair, putting on makeup etc. It definitely fits our lifestyle and if we decided to sell (not) then it is an easy fix to change it out.

I'm in Texas. My bathroom has a AC vents just like every other room in the house. I have an exhaust fan too. I have ceiling fans in the bedrooms, the kitchen and den, bathrooms and even outside under the patio. Most people I know (in Texas) have ceiling fans in their bathrooms. Like vwhippiechick said, it's much more comfy in the summer when applying makeup, using the hair-dryer. I have to take very HOT baths for my back pain. Couldn't do it if it weren't for the ceiling fan. I don't understand why some people find it odd.

I have a ceiling fan in our (only) bathroom, and once we removed the owl chain-pull, it's fine. We don't have AC, so it definitely fits our needs!

Kim, Thank you so very much! The fan is made by Craftmade Fans. Made right here in Texas :) I knew I didn't want to go with another *big box* (China made) store brand and did my research as to what made a good fan. A heavy duty motor and pitch of the blades are important. They are a combination of good quality and good price. We installed two, one in the master bedroom and bathroom. The style (that I incorrectly indicated on my list of materials) is Pheonix NOT Cordova. The price was just under $150 Below is a link to the Pheonix. There are TWO pages of blade color/motor color combos. I bought ours on line at hansenwholesale.com 1(800)201-1193. Great customer service and quick delivery (no tax). I didn't order the remote at the time, but I'm going to do so right now.
