Yesterday's Treasure Hunt Finds

I usually meet my bestfriend in town on Tuesdays for lunch and shopping, but she couldn't make it yesterday. Soooooo, I decided, to heck with it, I'm not running errands today, I'm going on a treasure hunt all by myself, and have a good time doing it . . . and I did!

I first headed over to GW to p/u a few items I'd bought on auction.

This first piece is VERY New Mexican. I've got it on my family room kiva fireplace mantel for the time being. It's the pot on the left there, which is actually a very good example of gourd art: a very large, dried gourd that's been hollowed out, dried, carves, incised and painted. It's supposed to be a bit crooked, being a real gourd. I got it for $20, but one that large and with that much carving on it would sell at an art show for at least $125. I think it makes a nice bold statement against my painted fireplace.

I also added to my Red Transferware collection with these 3 cups. They're Adams Ironstone and in perfect condition. I got the three of them for $7 total. Score!

At another TS, I found this darling pitcher for only $3. It'll come in handy with my Spring and Summer dishes, I think.

Take a look at my new napkin rings . . . aren't they pretty? I found them at Cost Plus World Market. They were a bit pricey at $3.99 each, but look at the detailing on them. They're very well made and even the ring potion is beautiful. I know I'm going to use these a lot!

I also hit Pier One. I don't get to this place often enough, but I should! I found the perfect placemats there for my next tablescape and napkins for it at World Market.

And . . . (I'm so excited about this!) I came up with a really different and unique idea for napkin rings there, too! I bought all the necessary things to make them, except for one more key piece. So, I'm not showing those yet until I finish.

I was going to head to CB next, but ran out of time. I thought I'd just head there today, but our dobie, Ronin, got sick in the night and I was up with him for most of it. On only 4 1/2 hours of sleep, I had to run him into the vet's this morning for an x-ray, blood work and exam. Nothing showed up, and we're waiting for the blood work to get back. Maybe tomorrow I can get back to town and CB.

That gourd is amazing! I like it as a stand alone item (wouldn't mind having it on my outdoor fireplace mantel), but it is absolutely perfect with your home's style. I've seen carved gourds here too, but you're right, they are awfully pricey.

Boy! Didn't that pitcher fall into the right hands. It's a natural with all your other fruit dishes. It should make a nice vase as well as a beverage dispenser.

The Cost Plus napkin rings are lovely, Lynn. I can see designing an entire tablescape around them.

Concerning the handmade napkin rings: It's not nice to tease your friends on the forum. You set to work and get those napkin rings done RIGHT NOW.

Hope Ronin is feeling better.

Thanks, OA! I started on the new napkin rings last night, but it's a half hour drive into town to get the elastic cording I need and what I need even more right now is a NAP ;^D
BTW, I did fix all those typos up there in my post, but in my acute state of exhaustion, I hit Submit Message instead of Preview Message . . . darn!

Magpie,I hadn't even thought about using those candleholders for anything other than making a pedestal. However, I have seen them painted up like snowmen or santas--or I could paint a couple acorns on them I guess. I only have red chargers, so these very inexpensive white ones seemed like something fun to "play" with while doing tablescapes. Jay, that's neat that you found a bowl in the same design--these say Gibson on the back. I like your idea of the candy stash! LOL I have used wreaths for centerpieces before like you suggested Lynn and Jane. Not so sure about using this one that way--think the little twiggy parts stick out too far, and the flowers don't go all the way around. Jane, I'm still seeing the picture there, wonder why you couldn't see it????? Jeanne, I don't know which of us is more blessed, me or my new friend! She is amazing and such a good rolemodel for me, she has MS and just fights it tooth and nail--is painting her bathroom and getting ready to hang wallpaper--maybe being around her will get me to stop procrastinating and get something done--if she can do all that, then I sure have no excuse! Thanks for the good suggestions ladies. The little cow butter dish is intended for a friend who collects cow items. Yachter, the tiny teapot is just an ornament--it looks like a cinnamon roll with icing dripping on it. The bell has little raised roses on it--not sure why I thought I needed it--but it was cute! Dreamgoddess, I can't seem to leave a rose plate behind! LOL Pasula, This is book #10 in that Spirit of Christmas series. I really need to find #1 so I will have 1-10 now. It has been fun hunting for them. I really need to find out how many were printed in that series so I know whether to watch for more or not. Kathleen, you can't tell in my lousy picture, but the two little plates are by Debbie Mumm and guess what???? They have acorns in the design! That's mainly why I bought them! Wish they would have had four instead of only two. Mo, Sandi, Blue and Karen, I like your idea of using ornaments instead of the candles on that little tree. When I drag all my Christmas decs out, I will have to play with it. Just couldn't leave it behind at only $1.99 plus 20% off! It is almost as fun sharing pics of my "treasures" with all of you as it was hunting for them. ;o) Luvs

Tell your friends you are looking for junk to turn into treasure. You'll be surprised what will be offered to you. A friend of ours was getting ready to move out of state. I spent two days helping him clean out his barn...deal was anything he didn't want either went in my truck or in the dumpster. I brought home such treasures as a table and chair set which I gave to my son and his wife for their first home, two carseats which his kids had out grown, one I kept for the little girl I was watching at the time and the other I gave to her father for his parents when they had her. I got four sections of picket fencing which were used for an outdoor wedding and soon for my veggie garden, several misc chairs, a box of old hardware which since I have an old house has come in very handy, some claypots, a variety of buckets and wash tubs in varying degrees of disrepair, a old wheelbarrow which became a planter, a lovely stack of misc wood that has come in handy for a vareity of household projects, some baskets, a few doors and old windows and some metal fencing. I'm sure there's more but that's the stuff I remember off the top of my head. All of it would have gone into the dumpster if I hadn't let it be known I was looking for some junk and was willing to do some work to get it. Word of mouth can be your best friend. BUT be warned if you do say you are going to help out or will pick something up do it in a timely manner or you won't get many folks taking you up on your offer.

Many thanks for your thoughts on it! DH is actually on his was down to buy it right now. I so wanted to go along . . . so that I could show him a few other gorgeous pieces I like, but DD was taken ill last night while at our (22nd) annual Halloween dinner party. We had to leave early and she's still quite sick with a 102-degree fever today. I can't leave her alone, poor thing, so my planned antiquing date with DH is out :~ ( I'll post pics early next week when I get it accessorized, but don't expect anything close to one of My3dogs masterpieces. I need to get that gal out here for a visit (and let her loose on my place!) ;^P

Those are all nice finds, Lynn. Even my inexperienced eye can tell that the gourd pot was a bargain. I love those napkin rings. Besides thrift shops, Pier 1 and World Market are two of my favorite places. - Gail

You sure got a bargain on that painted gourd. Its beautiful. And works perfect on your fireplace.
The Greenie Monster attacked me badly when I saw your transferware cups tho. Does it say on the bottom what the pattern is? I haven't seen any on eBay (yet) with these horses. I love them!!

Lynn, sending healing thots to Ronin, always worrisome when our pet babies 'take ill'.

The gourd is a real work of art and such a good deal. Red transferware cups were a great price. I almost bot a couple of cups and saucers to match one of my transferware sets but they were $6.99 each so I passed. Probably should have got them but at the price you paid I'd have grabbed them for sure. Pitcher will be great for anytime but especially spring/summer tables. Napkin rings posted are adorable and the ones you are making are being waited for impatiently! LOL You are such a tease.

I knew Karen would drool over those pretty cups with the horses on them! Neat gourd and very pretty napkin rings too. Love the little pitcher, so sweet. Glad you had a good time shopping and sure hope your furbaby is better. Luvs

Glad you made a day of it by yourself anyway! Good to get out especially after a week of not feeling good. Great finds...that GW online buy is LOVELY! The cups are just the cutest with the horse scenes! Napkin rings so elegant...I know you'll have some beautiful 'scapes with those! And the pitcher looks "cheerful!" TFS your day! Jeanne S.

Am back for just a moment here. Even with a 3 hour nap this afternoon, I still feel awful. I can remember when ~ in my mid-Twenties . . . living in South Florida, working, surfing and scuba diving~ 4 hours of sleep a night would have been nothing for me. Thirty years later, it takes a heck of a toll on the body ;~(

I've noticed that it looks like there's some weird white line down the middle of my kiva fireplace chimney.; that's just the light reflecting on the edge there. When I painted this, I should have added just a titch of dark along that edge. It only looks like that when using a flash. Sorry.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear that this bug has hit you so hard. Just keep getting as much sleep as you can.

Now, I came back here for a second look and, interestingly enough, I stopped to zero in on the fireplace chimney, which I hadn't noticed before. Then I scroll down and find that you painted it. I'd love to see a full view of the entire fireplace when you're feeling better.

Your gourd is really a beautiful piece and works perfectly in your home and where you've placed it.
Those napkin rings are really lovely and I'm looking forward to seeing those in one of your tablesettings.
I agree, that Floral Pitcher was meant for you..it's lovely.
Also... I LOVE your Red Transferware Cups...and their pattern. Look out for Karen I'm sure she's 'lusting' after them! lol

I love your kiva fireplace and you painted it? Your home is so unique in so many ways. Just love looking at it in picture. Oh, back on track, just love all your great finds. Wish I had more time to go into detail but gotta go to work.

I prefer shopping by myself unless I have another addicted person with me. Sometimes they don't like to pore over things the way I do! ;)
Your finds are lovely! I am sure you will get lots of use from those napkin rings..the gourd is perfect for your decor.

Punk is right, your fireplace is so nice and unique. I'm glad you found such great buys, the napkin rings are super and you all are going to get me started on transfer ware before it's over. Kathleen, I like to shop by myself also, but your comment about poring over things reminded me of my late Aunt Betty. Me, my mother, Aunt Betty, and my DS used to shop and we would be forever, because Aunt Betty had to fondle everything in the flea market. We had great times.

It is fun to shop by ones self, isn't it? You can spend as much time as you like looking and shop where you want to.
Thanks for all your nice thoughts. I'm feeling MUCH better today and so, thankfully, is Ronin!
I hear those whips cracking, so I'll get started on the new napkin rings asap ;^P

Awwwww Lynn, sorry to hear you've not been your usual energetic self, but glad to read you're feeling better. There ain't *nothin'* worse than being sick....keeps ya from finding all those bargains that are waiting for you! You found some cool stuff!! Stay warm. ;o)
