bypass doors on ceiling mount track, used as partition ?

I have an idea, but don't know if it will work or what hardware to use. The bottom half of our basement stairs are open to a tv room with fireplace. We are just finishing the basement now. I have an idea of hanging barn type roller doors on track from a soffit that would slide back on themselves. There would be 3 doors, each about 4 ft wide. When the tv or fireplace are in use, they could be slid shut to help keep heat and noise downstairs.

I don't really want any track on the floor, would I have to have some sort of roller stays to keep the doors in place? I am assuming I would.

Is there such a thing, or is this unheard of?

You might be able to use wall-mounted hardware.

In #1 you really need to consider headering, support for the header, milling the studs to conform to lath deformation caused by tile masonry base coat. 2) "I have a situation" To quote Dave Hester YUUUP "Both doors would need to slide to the same side and could either be enclosed in a pocket or left visible." If you are building a pocket in the room, why do you need two doors? If the pocket is in another room or outside the building envelope, how is it going to be encased or wether protected?

I am doing ceiling mounted track and floor to ceiling sheers and drapes with blackout. This is essentially a custom proposition. The rod is made of standard components, but the whole assembly is custom. However, I am not doing a valance so the top of the drape to the floor measurement has to be perfect (and this is some measurement like (Floor to ceiling measurement) - (hardware height measurement) also taking into account location of the hooks on the drapes. I am also doing double traverse rods with pulleys. I think you have to use traverse rods and carriers to hook the curtains on, with or without pulleys because nothing can go over the rod because the rod is attached to the ceiling. You can get Ripplefold Drapes with ceiling track included from The ShadeStore and they have measuring instructions. But if you are making a valance it may not be necessary to do ceiling mounted drapery hardware, you could do wall mounted hardware and hang the fixed valance only from the ceiling.

Good question for M Miller or Patricia Colwell Consulting "Is it possible or preferable to install the track before finishing the ceiling in new construction or does the window contract install this into the drywall? " Seems like before finishing is logical, but I don't know for sure.

Despite having already invested in the barn door option, I agree with other posters that a swinging door is the best option. The barn door track will look unplanned and out of place floating out from the adjacent wall. Door swing clearances are understandable concerns, but I still think it would be a bigger issue to have the floating barn track. Reduce the opening size to a stand door size (36" if you are worried about wheelchair, 30" if not.)will help with the clearances. On the flip side, it's really easy to take down the barn door later and just patch a few holes if you regret the decision.

I don't know of a track of of this type designed to be mounted to the ceiling: you may have to mount a beam to the ceiling, then the track to the side of the beam.

These systems generally have a roller on the 'captive' end [the direction the door will slide to when open], and some kind of holder to secure the free end when the door is in its closed position.

Seems to me you could use the sort of bolt that's used to hold one side of a double door in place, which are often have a spring inside so you can deploy and retract them with your toe. With something along those lines, you'd only need a small holder set into the floor to receive the bolt. Nothing would protrude above floor height.
