Need design ideas for my backyard(5000 sq.ft) - Seattle area
Comments (10)Kumar, ditto on "edit and remove email address" in your first post. This is where you can get help and ideas for designing your back yard, but not really where some one will hand you a plan. There's a fair amount of work involved. You'll need to provide more information in order to get help and be willing to assemble the information you get back into some sort of plan. One picture does not really show the extent of the back yard. If you stood next to the center of the back of the house and took overlapping shots while panning the yard (all shots taken from same position) then we could get a better feel for what is there now. In order to get control of weeds, you'd need all areas to be mowed turf, heavily mulched, or thickly planted. The combination that will work best will depend on your needs and desires, and the existing conditions. In order to get help in figuring out what arrangement will work best, provide the additional photos and more information about how you will use your yard....See MoreNew plans up for review - scaled down from 7500 sq ft to 3300 sq
Comments (13)thanks for the feedback so far. I was so excited to put the plans on here I forgot some details. there will be a full basement, we're planning on putting the garage in there, under the kitchen side. The original house had a dumbwaiter on that side of the house to take groceries and such up. I was also thinking of putting a coat closet on the front side of the stairs, the whole stairs issue has been super complicated trying to go up so far, and not use a ton of space for them. A drop zone is a definate must, I use the kitchen table for that and the other 1/2 has a chest and a desk in the front door. We like to think that we are tidy but make a mess too. Most likely there will be some built ins in the living room too, any suggestions? we're hoping to do that room in wood paneling. The walk in pantry is something I knew you all would say that I needed. Any ideas on how to get one in the space. At the front of the kitchen, closest to the dining room, we have a wet bar/butlers pantry area. In our current house that is one of the most used spots and seems more valuable space wise. Land is close to asheville NC, site elevation is about 4ooo ft. So it's pretty high up for here. The living room faces south. Climate is moderate, we get all seasons up there. The one thing that I'm not sure of is how brutal the winters will be, they have been changing a lot lately. We don't need screen porches, there are not any flying insects at that elevation. I'll try to put the original plans up too. Thanks for your help so far!!...See MoreDown-sizing our sq footage by 200 sq ft
Comments (12)Personally, I would never build a new house with 10' wide bedrooms. My current house has 2 bedrooms that are 10' x 11' 4" they feel they feel tiny to me with a full sized beds. But this is a 1179 sqft 1983 tract home so it is expected. If I were looking at a resale house in the 1800-1900 sqft. range that had bedrooms that small I would keep looking. Were it my house, I would keep the bedrooms at the original size. It is only 46 sqft. larger for both bedrooms but it will make an enormous difference in their feel. But that's just me. It is your house so build what you are comfortable with. Funny thing, I did exactly the opposite with the house that I am currently building. The original plans came out at 1850 sqft. but after several months of bumping this wall out and stretching that room I ended up at 2109. And the garage got even bigger. I didn't really want to go that big but to get everything to feel right to me that's where it ended up. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do....See MoreCritique my 900 sq. ft. modern home design PLEASE
Comments (60)My husband just pointed me to this story from Port Perry Ontario (he had siblings in Port Perry several years ago). The Golden Girls of Port Perry Lifted from that article: The national median monthly cost of a private room in a nursing home in the U.S. is $8,365, according to Genworth Financial, which means it costs more than $100,000 annually to live in a retirement home, and the price tag is only going up. Even if you have to "hire in" cleaning help, etc., aging-in-place is a whole lot cheaper than a nursing home. Of course, that's a nursing home -- not assisted living. Some communities here have gotten so far as declaring that first cousins aren't close enough family members to live together. That particular case was a household of grandmother and her two granddaughters. After grandma's death, the two cousins inherited the home and continued to live there but the local government was trying to force them to leave. I've never heard of this, but I don't see ... - How it's enforceable. If I let you come live in my house, who's going to say no? Assuming, of course, we're both law abiding citizens, who can say what happens inside my house? And if "they" do say no, how are they going to make you leave my house? - How it's possible, given society's widespread acceptance of unmarried couples living together as if married /though not married? I mean, if you can live with a guy you just met last week, why is it not okay to live with your cousin? - How it's possible, given that young people have always looked for roommates as a way of keeping their rent low? If this isn't okay, then college dorms are just plain wrong....See MoreBAVE
