I Give Up!! (More Pics)

. . . at least for the time being! If you've been following my pinecone dish saga, you know that I've been searching for some coordinating salad plates to use with them. Yesterday, before I needed to meet my bestfriend in town for lunch, I took back the giant-but-so-nice green salad plates I'd bought at Ross'. I had a few minutes, so I popped into Marshals to see what they had. They just happened to have the salad or b&b plates I'd seen on line. They were the right size and price ($3.99 each) so I bought six of them. Back at home yesterday late-aftenoon I tried them together. Yuk!!! They look terrible together . . . what was I thinking?!?

I give up! Whites in plates vary so much. The flowered plates were TOO BUSY and the wrong shade of brown anyhoo, but their background is a rather stark white. The pinecone plates background is a creamy white.

Sooooo, perhaps for now I'll use them with my square green dinner plates from another set. The square ones look like a charger here . . . or you can even argue that the 50+-year old pinecone plates are small enough to act as salad plates. I don't know. What do you think? I do know that the placemat I used here does NOT look good with the green plates, though!

But, on the bright side, Marshalls now has the transferware I'm collecting (they also have some great blue & white pieces) and I bought two more of the same dinner plates and four of these bowls for only $1.99 each. They look great with the rest of my transferware pieces . . . thank goodness!

But, I do think that for now I'm going to stop my search for salad plates to go with my pinecone set. I may find the perfect ones someday, but I'm not actively searching anymore. Do you ever hit walls like this?

Yes, and when you stop looking is when you will see something!
Great deal on the bowls...I would go for four at that price if I see them...but then will I want cups and saucers too? Does it end?? LOL
BTW I love those dishes you picked up...can you use them with something else?
The square dish actually looks silver on my screen...
Hey is there any GOLD in the pine cone, if so, would that be an option??

Lynn, Kathleen is right~when you're NOT looking is when you'll find exactly what you want. I think it must be natures law. ;o)

Gorgeous, gorgeous Renee. I love the combination of Foxgloves and irises, the Foxgloves make a very nice backdrop for your irises. And my favorite is the little succulent section with the cute little sempervivum 'Hens & Chicks" kind of cascading between the boulders. Is that Lamb's Ears behind the boulders?? Patty S.

yulia, your plants look fine. maybe a little puny, but the weather's been tough for most of those plants. growing veg requires patience, experience, and patience. and experience. keep watering regularly. every good veg grower i know uses miracle gro--it's GREAT stuff and acts very quickly. get a hose-end sprayer and apply it regularly in small doses. lots of mulch. right plant, right place, right season. it's stuff we all know, but it's hard to get it right. i think the hardest thing about gardening in fla is how many seasons we have. it seems to me that i am CONSTANTLY starting new seedlings for the next season... that's great, inasmuch as we can harvest stuff all year. but it takes practice and experience to know when to start what.

The beams need to be believable and in the correct places to appear as if they supported the structure or they then become the odd looking items if just thrown in where convenient. Having a cable supported pendant passing closer to a beam is just a reality of working with structural support that doesn't line up with interior features. Perhaps if everything was designed from scratch you could have perfection. If the breakfast/dining area was pushed out you could make the island longer or scoot it over. Not likely right?

Bless your heart.. I would be soo frustrated. But I agree about the time you give up... there they will be.

I wish these would work for you but I pulled them out and they are 8 1/2 inches...

Lynne, So sorry the new plates didn't work with the pinecone ones--but they are gorgeous! Hope you are able to find a use for them so you can keep them. I still think maybe a solid like the one Tam showed would be great with the pine cone plates. And like everyone said, you'll run across them when you're not looking. That was great that you found some more of the red/white plates at good sale prices too.

Bright, I still love those Mikasa plates you found at such a bargain price. The fact that there are walnuts on them just tickles my fancy! Aren't you going to use them? Or are you waiting for next Christmas maybe?

I agree with the others. Just relax and have fun enjoying your beautiful new blue bowls and Old English Castle bowls. (I love them both.)
One day when you least expect it the perfect salad plates will appear and you will snatch them up!

Thanks! Yes, I think you're all right, I need to relax and just enjoy the plates that I have. I also agree that a solid colored salad plate is probably the best. I do want to stay with a china or porcelain plate, though, rather than a heavier stoneware or the like plate. If you ever come across one you think might work, let me know, will you?
Oh, and Kathleen, yes the pinecone plates do have a gold rim.

I totally agree with Kathleen - when you stop looking, you will find the right dishes. :) Your new salad plates are really nice even though they dont go with your pinecone plates.

The search is so much fun though, isnt it?
