Clear coat peeling off

So how do I deal with this? Should I go to an auto paint place or the dealership? It's really bad, not a little patch but all over the roof. I can't paint over it, obviously.

Is there some way they can just get it all off without destroying the paint underneath? Or am I looking at a big operation? It's not new, but I still want to drive it a long time.

Any good body shop will do. How to proceed depends on the cause of the problem. That's where an experts eye comes in. You didn't say how old your vehicle is or the environment it's been in. What seems to happen in older cars that have been in the sun a lot, the sun shines through the clear coat and damages the color coat. The clear coat then becomes delaminated and flakes off. That's where the expert comes in. You may just have the paint flaking off the top today, but the hood and deck lid may be next up tomorrow. If the problem is only with the clear coat, it is possible to wet sand it and re-apply. Time is money and paint work always takes a lot of time.

The most cost effective way of dealing with it is to leave it alone and drive it. It won't be the best looking car on the block, but it surely won't be the only one with a flake away paint job either. If nice paint jobs were cost effective, everyone would have one. jmo

Painted my 20 yr old pine cabinets white about 3 years ago, I had glass put in a couple of the doors. After weeks of the process, taking doors, shelves out, cleaning, degreasing, sanding, prime, sand, prime, 2 coats of white-I used Benjamin Moore's cabinet paint, it wasnt recommended to coat with a clear coat, unless you want a shiny, plastic type look...I read forever about this process. To this very day, they look wonderful and clean very easily, just wipe off, no nicks. I think having no shiny clear finish makes them look like a rich, thick, white. By the way, I did buy the 30 dollar paint brushes I had read about, but found thru the process....honestly those little foam rollers, and brushes gave a smoother finish and I could toss them at the end of the day.

Your plaster is shot. You will need to refinish the pool interior surface. It looks like from your picture that there is a high build paint over the concrete substrate and that is what is peeling. Does the delaminated layer feel like concrete or paint? It could be plaster and not paint, though it is too thin at 1/4" as pictured, but either way everything that is delaminated must be removed completely before you refinish the interior surface with paint or plaster. You may need to look into a sandblasting to make sure you get it all off. Try not to put off this repair as this will only serve to weaken the substrate further. It is likely, assuming no additional leak areas, that your pool is leaking through the structure and that is why you are losing water. You need to pressure test your system and have the interior surface redone at minimum.

Tough to do much easily now. Scrape off the loose stuff. Use a stripper for the entire side(orange colored 'green' stripper is fine). Strip the remainder. wash with damp rags(see stripper instructions). and dry completely. Sand lightly to smooth the surfaces(no more than 150 grit). Stain desired color. Be aware the stain color will fade some, depending on the final finish. If the door were mine, I would finish with clear paint. Have done that before. Sherwin Williams(the brand I use) A100 Ultra deep tint base with no additives---no tint at all. It is a milky white when applied and dries completely clear. I have pictures if you want of walnut finished with the base. That finish(2 coats) will protect the door wood and color more than anything else. Because it is paint, not varnish/spar varnish, or poly. Paint blocks the harmful UV rays and protects from weather.
