OT:Dryer Died, Need Help

What kind of w/d do you all recommend? We have so much to wash and dry with Daddy here, I know that is what has caused mine to just kill over. I need one that will wash heavy quilts, blankets, and comforters. Seems like we wash 3-4 loads every day. Before Daddy came, we washed once a week. And a dryer that can dry the wash. We have been without for two weeks, and I am about to pull my hair out. We have to hang them outside on the clothes line, which we don't mind, except for the fact that it has been raining and we have no place to hang that many clothes.

Please make any suggestions.....

I haven't shopped for a dryer in years. I understand there are dryers that "know" when the clothes are dried and automatically shut off.

OA, What kind do you have? It must be a good one. Bet they don't make them like that anymore. Mine is only two years old, and it is DEAD!

Hubs and I usually just hang our clothes out side on the clothes line, but, with Daddy here and he has so much to wash, we can't wait for a nice day to hang clothes out to dry.

I've heard about those that shut off when the clothes are dry. That would be nice, we are always standing around checking to see if one batch is dry, so we can put another in.

Well, I think that is your cue - that fact that the area that the landscaper took care of is healthy. Just a guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's done more things differently then you have done, then just those little white balls. My understanding is that you can't seed St. Augustine, so I'm not sure how that worked for you. I would recommend talking to your landscaper to see what his recommendation is for you. If we are to help figure out why your lawn is dying, I'm thinking we will need pictures, and information about all the applications that you have done. Maybe your landscaper could tell you information such as both of the types of grass that you have, how you should fertilize, etc.

Thanks to all of your advice on this thread and past threads, we purchased the floor model G5775SCSFSS. It was selling for $1708, but because of the sale and a few scratches on the top control panel near the corner we snagged it for $1280. The scratches aren't visible when the door is shut. I'm not sure what full retail was originally, but it seems like a good deal. I would have even gone up in models if they had had one on clearance. Redoingit--I appreciate your experience. Sparkling--thank you for pulling up those specs. Covingtoncat--Mine is a Q4. I'm noise sensitive so I figured the quieter the better. Plus, the price was better on the Dimension Plus anyway even with the sale. Odd, huh? A2--I won't relate the fact that the noise started right after you visited.... ;) the racking system is the newest configuration, I think. Rococo--I appreciate you chiming in as I've read many of your posts with your experiences. Thanks to you, I know to ask to have the Miele hooked up to cold water. My concern about the handle protrusion was alleviated when I saw the store display. I think it will tuck mostly under the marble overhang. There isn't a good spot near the cleanup sink for a towel to hang so the bar handle will be handy. The photo you posted is very informative. Thanks!! Deeageaux--Thanks for the link. With the installation scheduled for Tuesday, I have a couple of remaining questions. I'd like to get the DW running ASAP as I'm sick of washing two DW loads per day by hand, and we're having a dinner party Thursday night. 1. Is the filler strip something that can be easily DIY'd by DH after install? Obviously it can't be here by Tuesday if I order it tomorrow. 2. I'm confused about the salt issue. Will the tech help me through this? Do I need salt if my water hardness is "slightly hard" at 55-60 mg/L? Is this regular salt or a special Miele salt? 3. Do I need any other special Miele products? 4. I've been using jet dry and Finish Powerball tabs in my old Kenmore. Are these OK to use? I have about a year's supply of each thanks to Costco coupons. Thank you all again so much! I'm looking forward to posting rave reviews of my Miele in future threads. :-)

Seems a bit pricey for what you're getting. Where in Northern Cal are you living? That will determine what kind of a system you should get. In SF, for example, heating and cooling loads are quite low and efficiency may be less important.

Viche, FYI the tester is not inherently safer except that it works better saving frustration and frustrated workers can get dangerous. An electronic voltmeter has too little impedance to work well in some instances. Sometimes you can get currents with considerable voltage induced in conductors. They can drive you nuts with their indications of voltages that vary all over the place. A yes/no detector that provides a load will fix that, faster, and better. " ...never buy a house with a hilly yard. :-/" makes me smile recalling my time in Pittsburgh. If a real estate ad was going to have it. "level yard", it was in the first line of the ad. It appears that if you want lights there and don't want to dig behind the wall, some low voltage replacements might be in your future. Find where the circuit goes underground. That is where you install your power supply for the LED lamps if it is not too far away. Running low voltage is less demanding. If the junction box is too far away (voltage drop), you can bury underground cable to a closer point. LOL @ DavidR's anecdote. It is not every day that you find that someone can break two rules with only one cable between splices, but I bet others will post.

Mine's a Kenmore - and it's as old as the hills. I usually went for that brand when I was young, as they were reliable back then, not too much money if you waited for the sale at Sears, and you could get a repairman out at the drop of a hat. I'm not so sure that's the case these days. In fact, I heard that Kenmore was dissolving although I can't remember when or from whom I heard that.s

Creek, I also use to always buy Kenmore but my current one is Whirlpool. It's suppose to know when clothes are dry but it's like all the others (suppose to know when the load is dry). I've had one other one and that feature doesn't impress me so I wouldn't buy one based on that. One of DSIL's friends had just bought it and was moving and told them they could have it for $50. Can't beat a buy like that.

DD has the new LG cranberry front load set on pedestals and they are very pretty but not sure they do more than any other set does. Hope you find one soon. Sounds like you could use one asap.

Creek, I can so relate to your predicament of having multiple loads to wash daily. I have a really old set of Kenmore washer/dryer and have only had to have the timer replaced recently. (Nearly panicked at having to wait two days for the part to arrive!) Go to the appliance store and look for one with a large tub capacity and multiple water levels. I can wash a queen sized comforter in mine, but for my king size bedspread I took it over to DIL's to go in her front loader with an even bigger tub capacity. Luvs

Sorry to hear your news. I'm not much help as I've had my Kenmore for 24 yrs. Like OA said, they were a Sears product and used to be extremely reliable, but I don't know about the current products.
I did buy an LG dishwasher last year and absolutely love it. I don't know if that transitions to their washers and dryers.
