Genealogy Table

I did what I am calling a genealogy table of dishes that belonged to my great grandmother. We think they are about 100 years old. The only piece missing is the sugar bowl lid.

My cousin is doing all the research on people, and I decided to do what I could on family antiques, cause we all have different things, and don't get to see each others treasures. Since all the family tree stuff is kept on computers these days, it seemed like a good idea to document some pics of things like the old sewing machine, some family pics in civil war uniforms, and some old guns, etc. I wrote what memories the family had about the dishes, and it it amazing what people remember when given an item to look at. Online, for family there will be places to add comments and memories.

Here are a couple of the pics. I don't want to overload here, it is on my blog, but there has been a flap on another forum about promoting our own blogs, so.... I don't know... if I never appear again, it's because I was banned!LOL.

ladypat - What a wonderful idea re: your family genealogy. You get to read the family stories as well as see the family treasures. That is inspired. Your great grandmother's dishes are beautiful. I love the flowers with the pale shadow flowers in the background. Thank you for sharing. - Marylee

I am a long time lurker, don't post but your tablesetting inspired me to do so. I love the dishes and the fact its not overshadowed by a big centerpiece. You don't see a lot of old doshes with that beautiful blue. I have many sets with pinks but not blue. I too am interested in the geneology side of it. Thanks for making my day on this icy morning.

YAY Janet! I'm thrilled you got the home you wanted! Lynn, how do you like having a microwave in drawer form? I think the favorite thing in our home is the laundry on the second level with the bedrooms. I have a few more things to do to it before I take pix to share how I've organized it's space. The only way it could be better was if empty hangers appeared magically when I needed them. I also love having a walk in pantry for storing all our food and larger season pans, crock pots and toaster oven. Another part of our kitchen I love is that on one side of the cabinets are to the counter. Two having outlets in them. One has the coffee pot and blender. The other has the toaster and mini food processor. We also have a huge attic for storage. Right now we are using the basement since we've not finished the flooring in the attic yet. With the cooler weather coming we'll be doing that soon. Then we'll be able to spread out our wood work shop that's in the basement. Our garage is six foot deeper than a standard two car garage giving hubby room for a workbench, four large storage cabinet, two smaller ones and room to store our rider mower and huge snow blower you need out in the country. Oh, and each bedroom has it's own bathroom with vanity for storage (ours has twelve drawers) and their own walk in closet. Weird as this sounds, there's no linen closet. For some reason when I was making changes to the plans to make it fit our lifestyle more I never noticed until it was too late. I found a solution that I like even better though. I store each rooms linens in an under the bed roll out storage container.

Not much help here either for several reasons. I don't like the forced games and stuff either. And usually there's enough competition between family members that you don't need more contests promoting it. If it's a pot luck, you could have a vote for the favorite dish of the day. Funniest story told that day? Best reminiscence? I suppose you would rather have it planned ahead of time but this is about all I can come up with. Things like best dressed, ugliest car, projectile vomited the greatest distance, volume, fluidity and stickiness and those things are usually fuel for fires. Same thing with giving trophies for the games. And a most-inbred award would be a slam dunk if you had Paula Deen as a relative. :) OK, not many ideas here. I'd be more inclined to have a bunch of little prizes and pull the names out of a jar or something. Once you win once, you don't get another chance. Could have separate drawings for adults & kids and could be something as small as a candy bar or whatever. People could bring stuff, even a white elephant giveaway if not too obnoxious. Extra jug of laundry detergent? Extra pair of gloves you didn't like? Oil change gift certificate? Depends on the group I guess. With the bulk being 55-75 I guess I'd look in a different direction but it sounds like you know what you want. Sorry I couldn't be more help! Good luck. And hey, don't lose a lot of sleep over it. Don't spoil it for yourself worrying about something that probably doesn't make a difference. Sounds like the group enjoys the get-together and the awards or something would be minor.

The only way that you would be able to properly help with whatever meds she is taking is to get a signature that you qualify as a Health Care Power of Attorney. As a HCPOA, you can attend and have input at her care plan meeting that happens every 90 days as required by Medicare. Otherwise, you are out of the picture with meds. Her primary might be good physician; however many don't know enough about aging and the problems that occur. Please ask whether that person has a lot of experience with geriatrics and in particular those in a nursing home. If the scope of practice is only Family Practice, then the training and such might not be appropriate for your friend. Dementia (of which there are several kinds) can come out many different ways. Don't assume that it is Alzheimer's, as it might be something else. There are health issues that also show confusion. Again, you probably don't have access to her medical records to determine whatever diagnoses are listed. Ask the family member for a copy, if you feel it would help the situation. Most nursing homes are divided into separate areas (hospital rehab, long term and dementia for instance). Each of those units should have a salaried person in change, find that person and ask questions. Don't be confrontational, but explain your concerns. There should be a social worker on site, ask that person some of the same questions. Another way to get on the good side of the staff is to provide 'treats' of some kind. Not just for the day shift, but for all care givers in that area. I am not a health care worker (the missus is a geriatric NP), but I worked in the nursing department of a nursing home for almost five years. I learned a lot while being there. Jim

Linelle - yes, I would suggest 23andme. Ancestry.com gives you: * ethnicity estimate (percentages) * DNA family matches (it will show their nickname, an estimated range you may be related, their family tree if uploaded, their general ethnic background and if you select a match, you can then see which people match both of you) * DNA circles (this matches a group of related people to a common ancestor using your inputted family trees) They are slowing improving functionality and adding features. 23andme.com gives you: * ethnicity estimate (percentages -- you can also view where and on what chromosomes the ethnic background comes from -- for exmaple, one could see that Chromosome 4 is half chinese, half japanese --- finally, if you have a parent test, you can view which percentages you got from that parent and then which from the other parent) * DNA family matches (it will show their nickname, an estimated range you may be related,....there is the ability to electively share genomes to see where you match exactly on the chromosomes.... , you can view a family tree if uploaded and/or view surnames and places family lived, if uploaded.... The matches also tell you the specific amount of segments you match on and the overall percentage of your DNA that matches.) * Haplogroup information -- essentially the origins of your maternal line, if you're female, or maternal and paternal, if male * Neandethal percentage * Countries of ancestry .. as reported by your DNA matches * tools to compare data between or among genomes you have shared with you..... * access to your raw DNA file to possibly use on other sites (ancestry might give you this but I haven't noticed.) If you don't want to play around with the info much and strictly want percentages of DNA composition, I would still choose 23andme as the presentation is nicer. :)

ladypat..what a very lovely setting, and oh my, to be
able to have your GrDGM's dishes with ONLY the sugar bowl lid missing, is priceless! Did you ever check to see if you can replace it? .
I love the meaning behind this table, and that family members are sharing stories about them too
I think it's so important to keep tract of family treasures and documenting them so younger family members can look upon them with 'some family history' and attachment..rather than just an old dish..etc.
I love Johnson Bros and these dishes are so lovely and delicate. I'm amazed with all the pieces still intact too.
You added just the right touches and blue tablecloth is a lovely 'backdrop' to showcase them...I think your GrDGM would be so proud!

Pat Your table is lovely. The dishes are beautiful.
Isn't it wonderful to have heirlooms like that, and to have the history that goes with them?
The first pictures I posted some months ago were of china that belonged to my DGM.
I looked at your blog. Your Great Grandmother was quite the lady wasn't she?

Pat, what beautiful dishes and how wonderful to be able to set your table with them! I love the pattern of them, which is so delicate and lovely. I inherited my great-grandmother's Johnson Bros, too. Mine are the scalloped, yellow Pareek pattern, Malaga. I agree with Jane, Johnson Bros have such amazing patterns.
As for links to blogs, I say bring them on! I'm perfectly capable of deciding whether I want to click on a link to one or not. I'm off to check out yours ;^D

pat ... this is just such a wonderful gift for your family ...sharing this type of genealogy...beautiful! You did your GGM proud (& DM) on your blog page! Very pretty table!! The dishes, stemware & flatware are lovely on the bkgrd of your blue t'cloth.

With our extensive technology today, our families will be able to "know us" in future yrs...& you certainly are creating an impressive keepsake with pics & stories! My Mom did a family history back in early 70's where the whole book is done by typewriter & Xeroxed photos. It is a precious keepsake for all of us.

Those are beautiful, I love flower patterned dishes and any thing vintage, is very dear to me. The gravey boat and butter dish are extra special.

Pat, those are beautiful dishes, such soft flowers and all the gold on them. The glasses you used with them are so beautiful too. I loved reading your post and hearing a bit of your family history. You are so fortunate to have been given the privledge of being a caretaker of these and preserving the memories for you family members. ;o)

Pat, these dishes are wonderful. Love the soft colors and beautiful borders on them. They look pretty modern. If you hadn't told us they were like 100 yrs old I would of thought they were newer.

It's so great that you have this lg set. I will come back and check out your blog later. So glad to hear your on top of the Genealogy. It's so important and we should all keep up on it. Thanks so much for sharing this table.

Those dishes are so lovely and delicate looking. And the family history makes them all the more wonderful. Its definitely hard to believe they are so old...wish they could talk and tell us stories of all the folks who sat before them.
I agree with what the others have said, and especially Jeanne...it is a wonderful gift for your family.

Pat, I remember seeing this table on your blog and thought it was so beautiful. I'm very much into genealogy, in fact I'm the only one in my family that is, and I think it's fantastic that all these things are being documented.
