Tub Deck with Seams?

I haven't been able to find a fabricator that will make a marble tub deck in one piece (without any seams) with the dimensions I need. The tub deck will be 41" x 80.5" with a 34.5" x 64.5" cut-out for the tub. This will leave 3.25" of marble on each long side of the tub deck and 8" on each short side. Someone had suggested they might reinforce each long side underneath with a metal rod, but I have yet to find a fabricator to do this. Since the marble can easily break when it is being installed, the best they will do is two pieces (a seam on each long side). I think I will be able to choose one slab, use the cut-out for the vanity, and they will make a two-piece tub deck out of the remaining marble (so the veining should match at least). They assure me I won't notice the seams. Does anyone have any photos to share of a tub deck with seams? Are the seams very noticeable? Any suggestions on how to get the deck in one piece? Thanks for any help!

I'm not an expert, but I think it would be hard, if not impossible, to find a fabricator who would do a one-piece installation of the size you describe. You're talking about two weighty ends (41"x8") joined by a 64" runs of only 3" wide marble -- that just seems too fragile to transport and install.

Is this tub a drop in?

I have installed large slabs on the platforms then cut out the waste piece in-place, then dropped the tub in. I've done it several times with soapstone, once with granite.

Very easy to do if the front apron is still open.

I much prefer to stone the deck, then drop the tub in so the tubs' rim covers the stone. If you butt the stone up to the side of the tub's rim, then you need to work harder for a cleaner line on the edge of the stone. Account for the thickness of the stone when you pour your mortar bed to set the tub in. If you're going that route. If uncertain, you can dry set the tub on top of the stone, peak underneath, see how much space you have between the tub's base and the subfloor. Then pull the tub, mix and set your mortar bed, then reset the tub and get the rim down nicely on the stone. Then drink beer while the mortar bed cures. Several beers. Mongo

I haven't pulled back the caulk. Getting in the space won't be difficult. On the outside edge of the tub, the deck space is slightly over four inches. On the faucet edge, there is no decking; the tub butts up against the wall. On the back end of the tub, there is about eight inches. On the final long side, there is a "garden" type window centered with the tub, which is 25 inches deep and 48 inches long. Basically, it is an extension of the deck. seattlemamadrama ~Well my Wasauna story ended badly. The first tub was drained the wrong way for me. I shipped it back at their expense and received my replacement last week. The crate was in horrible condition, held together by plastic wrap about 2 times around it. The person who sent it to me must have received my tub and we just traded. I sent him one in perfect condition never removed from the crate. The tub he sent me was dirty, removed from the crate and damaged with scratches. I refused the delivery and call Alex for a refund. He tried to give me 300.00 off and get a new one sent to me but I just took my refund. I have not seen the credit on my card as yet, it has been 4 days. I would say stay away from them. I'm curious as well..we want jacuzzi or whirlpool tub in and want to place shower beside it...but now are curious if we can because of any required clearances...is there info anywhere that discusses the basic area needed in a bath remodel to allow for a typical install, whether it be a corner tub or a regular tub? This would in turn tell us about the tub deck we should allow. Thanks...and thanks for this thread!

Thank you for your responses. It is a drop-in tub that could be installed as an undermount or drop-in. We had planned to do an undermount installation. It's a rectangular cast iron tub. (Kohler Tea-for-Two K-855).

Mongo, I like that idea. Have you ever done this with marble and do you think the cut-out could be salvaged for the vanity top? Is it at all possible to do the cut-out on site if we do an undermount install? Also, were you able to then do a polished edge on the cut-out?

I've never done "in place" cutting for an undermount, only for drop ins. It'd be tough to do the cutout and the edge detailing in place without damaging the tub.

Yes, I've always reused the cutout remnant which has required the cut edges to be detailed. I'll do all soapstone work myself, usually on-site. But the granite edges that are getting a detailed edge, like an ogee or similar, get taken away and are detailed by an outside stone fabrication shop.

I can't recall ever having done an in-place cut with marble.
