9 1/2" I-joist or 11 7/8"?

Talking to my builder about using 9 1/2" I-joists rather than the 11 7/8" he had planned on the second story floor joists. The thinner ceiling would enable us to eliminate a tread in our stairs and have a comfortable run/rise (as Rennovator8 showed me in a pervious thread.) Both would be 16" on center. The maximum span is 16', which would have over it the master bath and closet (with no tub), and the rest of the house would 15' or 14'.

Here's a PDF of the specifications. The spec sheet has the builder using L360 joists, and I assume we'd use the heaviest 9" joists: http://woodbywy.com/document/tj-4000/

Looking at the specifications, the 11" appears significantly stronger, with a max vertical sheer of 1,705 lbs vs 1,330 with the 9". That's really the only specification I understand. If the builder gives the ok, should I be comfortable with the smaller joists? Thanks!
