solid, easy to clean, joy to cook on 36' rangetop/cooktop?
Comments (12)I have a Gaggenau gas cooktop and a Wolf induction cooktop in two different homes. I would have done gas in both homes, but only electric was possible in the second home. While the induction cooktop is miles ahead of standard electric cooktops, I still prefer gas. I like the visual cue that one gets from seeing the size of the flame. I have the Gaggenau model KG-291, a 36" five-burner model. It's definitely at the high end of the price spectrum, but it's a dream to use, and it cleans up beautifully and easily. Everyday cleaning is accomplished by lifting off the grates and spritzing with Windex or Formula 409 and a quick wipe with a sponge. It takes less than a minute. A more thorough cleaning (about once a week) involves lifting off the burner assemblies and scrubbing more thoroughly, usually taking 10 to 15 minutes. There are no crevices, gaps or crannies for crud to accumulate. The burner assemblies are sold brass, and darken over time, but they still look good, although not that nice brassy yellow color they have when new. My cooktop is almost 5 years old and still looks like new. It cooks like a dream with the same low simmer temperature available on all four of the main burners, regardless of whether it's a large or small burner (2 of each). The center burner is much larger, and can't be lowered to quite as low a temperature, which isn't a problem. The only real drawback to this cooktop is price. It has gotten significantly more expensive than it was when I bought mine, but I still think it's worth the price. I'd buy it again if I were outfitting a new kitchen. Comments (9)DH and I got the appliances home last night. There is snow in the forecast for the next several days and we didn't want to wait. It's just over 60 miles one way, and not real fun driving around the city with an 18' stock trailer. I got as far as to open the boxes. My new induction Icon does not have the metal band between the burners and the controls and it does not have the vent holes along the edge of the metal trim - it sits flush down on the cabinet. Those are the two things I didn't especially like about the first Icon - we shall see how it all works out in use. I'm so excited about getting to use my new cooktop - I'll have to figure some way to get it hooked up. Now I need to find a new home for my free standing range. Comments (8)Thanks Gary. I think I'm going with the GE, although I'll probably get a little bit wider base to have flexibility in the future. I read the manual and it seemed pretty intuitive to operate. I like the frameless style. When I looked at the sizes and power ranges it looked fairly comparable to the Bosch, Electrolux and Miele and it's significantly less expensive. I suspect induction is finally going to take off in the US and prices will come down and features will improve over the next few years so I can upgrade down the road if I need to without feeling too guilty. The only thing that bothers me is the 12" clearance that GE requires below it. I don't mind putting a false front for the small top drawer but I wanted to have two deep drawers below it for pots and pans and I don't want to void the warranty. The Electrolux guide shows vents above the countertop and I think it said 4 1/2" height. Was that all the clearance they wanted below it? Also, on some appliance site, it said no downdraft for both the GE and Electrolux. Does that mean you can't have a downdraft system with them or just that that manufacturer doesn't make one? I know the cabinet may have to be deeper but my current gas cooktop has downdraft on an island and I'm staying with that....See MoreWhich Induction Cooktop: Thermador, Electrolux Icon, or GE Profil
Comments (2)I've had the GE for nearly two years.....love it, love it, love it. Still looks brand new - no scratches. Love how it cleans up, love induction, etc. I chose this model because of burner placement. I tend to use the larger burner alot - whether stirfry, pan meals, large soup pots, etc. and it was one of the few models that but a larger burner in front. It has the small burner on the left, and a larger burner on the right. Many 30" put the larger burner in the back. I also liked it's price point. Good luck!...See More59 Dodge
