Double Wall Oven & Cook top or Double oven range?

The time has come to purchase appliances.

Everything has been chosen except for the ovens, and you have all convinced me to go with induction for the cook top.

Kitchen Aid makes a range with an induction top, and a double convection/regular electric oven. The top oven is big enough for a baking pan or cookie sheet, and the bottom one is big enough for a turkey.

That is one choice. I'm used to double wall ovens and a separate cook top. Currently one of our wall ovens is not working, so I always use the bottom one.

Anyone have experience with the double oven range?

Please share. I love to hear your experiences.

you'll get more oven space with two wall ovens over a range with two ovens, plus you can place one or both at a more useable height. WIth a range they are always below counter height.

I love what I did - I went with a cooktop and wall ovens - one is a speed oven and the other a convection oven.
I can use the speed oven as a MW, convection oven, speed oven (awesome - see my post about being creative), and as a warming oven...
Then, I have the oven below for general baking.

I don't miss trying to cook while baking - the heat level was always high! - But thought that was the norm...

jmith, thank you AGAIN! I really appreciate your posts :-) Uh...where does the air make-up unit go?? Breezygirl, wow, thank you for your thoughtful and reasoned post! Yes, upon reflection, an underccounter oven would not be good for my back. I was thinking that maybe I would only use the second oven for parties and holidays, but sometimes we have friends over every weekend. Good point about the cost of separate ovens. I do like the look of double ovens, too. Especially the Bosch 800 series and the Kenmore Pro, but it is very hard to find anything on them...few mixed reviews online. I will ask on this forum. And do some research on Electrolux as well, since they seem to be popular here. I saw the Wolf cooktop at Great Indoors. My mother has a Wolf range, but she hates to cook. Lol. OK, will also look for the Capital. Hadn't heard of it until this forum. Yes, found ajmadison and HomeEverything. HomeEverything has slightly better prices, and usually free shipping. Yes, you're right, I couldn't find a published price on the GE Monogram counter-depth anywhere. I have to call or email each site to get the price, and from what you and the GI saleslady said, there probably won't be much difference except for no tax if I buy online. I have accepted that I can't vent with an OTR MW. I will have to spring for an undercabinet hood. Bleah. $1400. Ugh. Loss of cabinet space. Boo. I am thinking that, since I was planning for stacked 42" + !2" or 36" + 18", I will have to mount the MW under a cabinet...h'mmm...maybe I will have to do a mullion door on a 36" or 42", since the 12" or 18" are supposed to be mullion? Thought briefly about putting MW in island, but kids are 6 and 10 and tall, too. LOVE the Kitchens forum. Haven't posted my floor plan yet, trying to get up the courage to post pics of my truly UGLY kitchen. It doesn't look as bad or difficult on the floor plan as it does in the pictures Will check with contractor. Presumably he is up on all this stuff. Never heard of MUA until cooksnsews mentioned it! The GE Monogram ZFSB25DXSS is currently $3825 @ Great Indoors, on sale. I liked it bc it is 25 cu ft and well-planned inside. It looks.like close to the same amount of space that we have in our KA Superba, which we bought 9 years ago and has never given us a problem. I will look at KA fridges, thank you! I need the MW drawer money for the undercabinet hood. Boo. But the fridge isn't in my appliance budget, anyway. Lol.

I have had the Kitchen Aid KEMS308S for 5 years. I had not noticed that the microwave power was low. I doubt that power will be an issue. I assume that many ovens have cool down features. They are not running when the door is open. It is ture that the fan makes some noise, but it isn't that noticable. When I originally purchased this oven I had been intending to get individual ovens, but it turned out that the individual ovens had been discontinued. I see no difference between your choices because they are all double ovens and when one fails, they both fail wheras individual ovens could be replaced individually. I have not heard of the microwave section showing a high rate of failure. You didn't even mention the advantage of the micro/convection. It is not just a microwave, but a real convection oven with a broiling (sort of) element. It is not a speed oven because it does not microwave and heat at the same time. Actually it CAN microwave and crisp via the broil element. Anyway it is a small second oven that can bake a pie or bread (or a small trey of cookies I suppose). It heats far faster than the regular large convection oven because it is small. I find it very useful. The only problem is it is occasionally in use when I would want to reheat a cup of coffee etc. I keep an old microwave in the garage for those cases. While I hope I have relieved your concerns, I believe that there IS an issue. I have had no problem with my oven, and it has been several years since the Main contingent of problems: similar models have encountered a higher than normal thermal fuse blowing during the large oven self cleaning cycle. Unfortunately, the fuse is located on the back of the oven and is a $50 item and shuts everything down. Of course, most people see no problem (myself included) and the problem is certainly due to excessive heat behind the cabinet that could probably relieved by making sure that there is a little more open space back there since you are still installing cabinets? In any case, this is probably a general issue. Other ovens have failed on self clean cycles. At this point, many people concider the self clean to be a marketing ploy and don't use it. Perhaps we just don't make enough spattering roasts, but I have easily wiped down the main oven. It wasn't stuck on hard. Perhaps the surface has anti stick coating? My self cleans have been done mainly to test the thermal fuse problem. By the way, the microwave interior is stainless steel and IS much harder to clean. In fact, that last sentence is probably my most important piece of information. I imagine it would apply to other convection microwaves.

Have you ever used an old timey range with lots of small compartments? Or even a fairly big oven and a warming drawer? Once you get past the question of are the ovens big enough, which you can determine in a showroom, or just with dimensions and a measuring tape if you have to, the question is whether you'll like using a range that much. One or the other of the ovens is going to be *very* low, unless you're talking about a 48" (or larger) range, or a French range. Generally, with a 30" range, the smaller compartment is on top. I can think of various reasons why that makes more sense on the design side, but if you're using the bigger oven more and it's lower, that's a lot of bending, even with glide out racks. Ideal is all ovens at waist level. I grew up with two waist level ovens of different design and purpose, one on either side of the kitchen. I wish I could have copied that. :) Double ovens can be mounted low, middle or high. If they're low, you basically have one at a good height, and one at the same height as if it were in a range. At medium, one is too high and one is too low, but you get a drawer underneath for potholders or pans, and storage above. Mounted high, you don't get much useful storage above (i.e., need a ladder if there is any), and you're putting pans in and out at shoulder/head level. I've seen a lot of European kitchens where they mount small ovens at head level on purpose (i.e., not forced by limited space or anything). That makes looking in convenient, but puts limits on who can use your kitchen at all (i.e., no one short), and there are some dangers associated with opening and tending ovens at head height. If there's a drop down door, it must be shallow enough to let you get in, and most ovens nowadays have doors that cover the whole oven area, rather than just the cavity, making head height a no-go. Even at under shoulder height, it can be an issue. Given that few of us can make Ideal work, that leaves what's possible. Figure out whether you want to stand in front of ovens to use your cooktop, vs. where you'd put wall ovens and how high. Once you get past the strictly positioning issues, a lot of the rest should come clear for you.

While going from cooktop to oven isn't unheard of, it's not a common enough even that I would fret about it. We're with you on ovens. In fact, we're putting in the Bosch swinging door ovens because my wife is short and she has a hard time reaching over a normal oven door. As for single-vs-double. I had a 48" Thermador range two houses ago. I rarely used the second (smaller) oven. However, I moved into a townhouse with double ge ovens (and a ge gas cooktop) and boy I got used to that in a hurry. Yeah, I had to carry a pan to the oven to finish under the broiler or bring the pan of drippings back to the stovetop to make the gravy, but the few extra steps weren't going to kill me. So what we ended up with is the Bosch 688 cooktop and double Bosch ovens.

My experience is very different. 13 years ago, I put in two full ranges (4 burners on each one) in two different parts of my kitchen. Space was not a problem, and we entertained frequently with multiple cooks in the kitchen. I also have two dishwashers, so was able to make two work triangles. It has worked very well, although I can see your point about trying to cook while baking and the heat generated.

The main point I wanted to make was that at the time, I bought an expensive ($1600) Kitchen Aid convection range. It has been nothing but a nightmare. I often cannot broil and cook on the cooktop at the same time--it shorts out the entire range. This happened within the first 6 months of owning it, and the repairman said that the model was really just for show and the circuitry wasn't sufficient to handle heavy cooking! Since then, the electronic control pads don't register, so if I want the oven to be at 350, I have to press in 349 because the 5 and the 0 don't work! The convection never worked properly. Horrible waste of money. I can't wait to get something else, and I'll never get another Kitchen Aid.

We did the same thing as a2gemini.
We have an induction cooktop, an oven below counter but not under the cooktop, and we have a speed oven built into the wall at a height that is convenient for us.

We love this arrangement, we had a range before.

The speed oven gets a lot of use, first as a microwave but then as a regular oven and a speed oven. Potatoes are done in 14 minutes, instead of an hour (Including preheating). Most things that we (bake, roast or speed cook on a daily basis) fit in the speed oven, so the big oven is really only needed for big turkeys, a really big ham, etc etc.

If we are preparing a large meal, like we did for St Patrics day, then having both an oven and a speed oven comes in real handy!

Thanks for all your input! I had to look up "speed oven," because I've never even heard of such a thing.

Our decision was easy because I wanted a 36" induction cook top, and the only range 36" wide is some brand we never heard of at a price we were not willing to pay.

So, we'll be doing the double wall oven thing with a separate induction cook top.

Glad that you made your decision and now on to the ovens!
Here is a picture of our ovens - Wolf on the bottom and GE Advantium on the top - coordinated trims. I have the Advantium as high as possible based on both of us being a bit taller than average - It does open like an oven, so you don't want to go too high.

Desert - total cost for cooktop plus 2 single ovens is definitely higher than most ranges (I say most as there are some high end ranges that would knock my socks off!)

Desert - the drawer under the ovens is taller - but do take time with your KD to determine the best height for you.

I didn't want to crawl on the floor to put things into and out of the oven. I really wanted the lower oven a couple inches higher but KD said a problem due to the speed oven opening just like an oven (I wanted the Advantium 240)
She was right - it is perfect for me - I am 5'7" plus a bit.

I also decided I wanted 2 single ovens (even if I went with the same brand so that I can replace each one individually).

PS - I don't think DH figured out how much over budget I went.. (Not outrageous but definitely over planned amount :-)

I love my separate double wall oven and cooktop arrangement. But have you read my previous posts about Kitchenaid Induction? It's pretty noisy. Some poor guy even put up a Youtube video showing how loud his K-aid induction is, and someone posted it here a few weeks ago. His is a lot worse than mine, but still. It clicks as the magnets come on and off, and it buzzes. It's not awful, and it has very small clearances so I could put a drawer under it and a cab very close to it, and the bridge burner is nice, and the hob arrangement is good, but you really should hear one before you buy. Maybe a Bosch, Elux or Miele, instead?
