I'm a little down today. Barak is getting my induction cooktop.

Ordered and paid for my Bosch double oven, and then did my taxes yesterday before ordering my 36" induction cooktop. First year without a dependent, no more "head of household". Didn't have enough withheld as it turns out, so - I have to write a check to the IRS that is exactly the price of the cooktop. Oh well, maybe this means that I was really meant to have the zone free Thermador in July after all.... No, wait, that $$$ will go to additional withholding so this doesn't happen again next year. Any ideas for a Plan B? Cheap all electric place holder? Max Burton induction portable? Blue Monday. It will all work out eventually. Hope Michelle has All-Clad and Le Creuset cookware.

My condolences. Tax time is always somber for those of us who actually pay taxes, and it always seems like more than our share. The hard part is finding the balance where everyone pays their fair share, since the current system where the majority pays nothing (or less) is burdensome to the upper middle class because the lower class so vastly outnumbers them.

I hope you can save up soon for your cooktop.

Have you tried looking on craigslist and ebay? If you have a few weeks before deciding to pay retail, something may turn up. I purchased a never installed 36" gagg induction for 1500. So yes.. it is possible.

Here is a bosch one available. Many of these are listed by legit brick and mortor stores who are basically getting rid of inventory. They will give you a receipt often and you can have warranty.

Yes, kirby, you hit it on the head. The power goes off between clicks (it goes "click"-turn on, "buzz"-on, pause-off) and that's how they give you lower power. I figured this out when I was suateing zucchini on level 4 on Friday, and the sizzle went louder and softer in time with the clicks. You figured it out without even hearing it! I had two burners going on Friday, and they clicked in syncopated time. This was my own fault. I knew to stay away from the KA oven. I should have realized they aren't very good at electrical stuff. I'm amazed, though, that this bothers no one else but me. One other KA owner did respond to me, and she does not have constant clicking. It's possible that my clicking is louder than usual. I don't hear it as much with the hood going. Maybe others just don't notice it.

To Nanj: I literally took my "favorite-sized" pots to the store and put them on the cooktop to make sure I could easily fit, say ... three of them at one time and it was not a problem. There's a good amount of space bet. each burner and I DO use bigger pots, but seldom more than 2 at a time I'd say. Three would not be a prob. at all for me + a fourth little one, if nec. I COULDN'T have the 36" size unless I was willing to modify my existing granite counter. But, even if I could, the 30" was more than adequate for my needs and I've always used a 30" so I knew it should be fine. I've never had the need to use 5 burners at one time, but if I did: I have three add'l single burners in my pantry: a butane gas one that is fabulous, an old elec. coil one and an induction burner that I bought as a trial. 59Dodge: I so agree - the only time I would use the boost is to boil a large pot of water and can't imagine having to do that in three diff. pots. As stated, you CAN use the boost for two diff. pots at the same time. NO ONE would ever be just "cooking" on the boost level - it's on steroids! 3400 Watts is waaaaay more than anyone could possibly need or want. And it's so fast - it's ridiculous. To me, 3700 Watts is totally superfluous and redundant. 12 crumbles: read my response just above to Dodge RE: 3700 watts - I'm promising you, it's just not necessary. I would think the time difference might be LESS than 15-20 seconds. Re: the timers for the burners - I'm very attentive when I'm cooking and could easily visualize that I wouldn't use them. I don't want the burners going off without my realizing it and it would always be a guessing game as to the proper time to set it for. If I'm frying, I'm right there watching and turning, if I'm simmering a big pot of sauce, chili, whatever - on the induction it's not going to ever burn. Only for baking in an oven does one need a timer, IMO. And, FYI - this cooktop DOES have a minute timer that is easily set, just to let you know when "X" amount of minutes have expired. Also lets you know, after a pot has been removed, that that burner is still hot/warm to the touch as a reminder, until it cools down.

I have just insisted that they put in the wiring (50 amp) in our rebuild for induction even though I can't afford a new range right now. I have my eye on a hugely expensive (for us anyway) and totally impractical Bertazzoni. What brand have you got? Are you happy with the oven as well as the induction top? We have an electric smooth top now and I can really sympathize with you funky. Our top stayed pretty nice for years thanks to my DH who seems to find relaxation in scrubbing the top after every meal, but even so, it is now starting to show scratches and rings. Good luck!

I had the U 2 error code again today. I was making instant noodle on the big hob with level 8 (no power boost), then I turned on the small hob to the right (same zone) of it to fry some eggs. I noticed once the small one was turned on, the boil in the big hob dramatically decreased and shortly after the big hob started blinking U 2. All otter burners seem to be fine so I moved my pot to the left hob to finish cooking. The big hob does not respond to any command. Once I was done cooking, I turned it off and ate my noodle. After I was done I checked he big hob again and it seems to work fine. Arghhh...

Wow, lalitha! You did great. Thanks for the info. I'll go to craigslist and take a look. Paying taxes isn't fun but I was only trying to be a little humorous over yet another appliance/kitchen reno setback. Just poking a little fun at myself and trying to be lighthearted about my tax time mistake. It will be ok in the end, as it always is. Seems like that guy with the law - Murphy - has been hanging around my kitchen again. Guess I'll cook something for him on my hotplate. Maybe that will make him go away.

Pasture, your post was fine. In fact it's a common experience--whenever you are just about to start a renovation, project or upgrade it always seems like your wallet suddenly springs a leak.

the good news is having to pay meant you had income coming in. Being able to pay what you owe is another good sign. Just think of not having it to pay or not having any income coming in. Health and happiness are a privilege. For us to even be entertaining buying anything new is a blessing. It will work out for you.
