My rooster dinnerware and today's shopping

I haven't gotten around to taking a photo of the Royal Rooster Dinnerware my DD ordered me for Xmas, but copied the catalog photo to show you.

And today I went to get some more Valentine's decor. I pulled up the photo of my stacked plates last year, my very first attempt. Oh my, it was rather pathetic I now realize.

And I sure didn't buy much for Val Day either. So I decided to go to Double Trouble this afternoon. That's my Michaels that they now opened a Dollar Tree right next door to it. Went in DT first and got quite a few neat things, especially some small rose garlands. Then hit Michaels and got more stuff. Spent my last Xmas gift card, LOL. I couldn't stay out of the Xmas clearance dept of course. So came home with half a dozen things to now find a place to store. sigh. Hopeless. Not only finding a place, but ME.

Once I get plates decorated, will take pix of course, and hope they turn out better than last year's. Should be easy to do that tho. ;o)

Oh, Karen, those are great looking roosters. I can see your kitchen table set up with one of your pretty ceramic roosters and these plates. Is the background ivory? And the rim is green? Lots of great possibilities there. Know you will really enjoy them. TFS. Glad you had fun shopping. Sounds like some of us may have to rent off site storage areas! lol Luvs

Nope Luvs. Big shopping day still ahead. My birthday not till end of month and I think the girls are taking me the Thurs or Fri just before it. Will enjoy spending THEIR money this time. LOL. The big rooster would look good with burgundy or gold too, but I like the way the green makes his colors stand out and picks up the hint of green by his legs too. F&F have such great things, my DF knows I love them and she also got me a piece for my birthday. Will get pix of it later. And my very BF really jumped in on this rooster thing and straightened me out fast. She has a much better "eye" than I do. LOL. Also on the counter display. So here's what I tweaked since earlier...tho no pix tonight. I went back in kitchen and really looked at the big rooster. The rabbit canape plate is just waaay off scale for him and all wrong. Why didn't I see that at first??? I took it and propped it up by mini egg tree, till I can go get a stand for it, and it looks great there. With the little tree, that plate, then the bunny basket, I think the grouping has a much better look and scale to it. I took the tallest of the 4 bunnies and actually put him INSIDE the little fence. That looks better too I think. And then I took the little tulips with the root ball and LAID it on the Dollar Store plate so it's beside Cabbage Bunny as she suggested. Much better!!!! I'm learning as I go I guess, with lots of help. LOTS. Karen

You are all so wonderful! I should have known I wasn't the only one who thought new granite deserved new plates :-) I only told dh about the new dishes after our massage therapist said she'd take the old ones. NONE of which have broken in 16 years. They're pretty thick and sturdy. The new ones are much thinner and probably WILL get broken! My original plan was to put them in the new cabinets as if they had just magically appeared. Hee, hee. LOL, pinch_me, these plates all have ROOSTERS! I did get black bamboo placemats and yellow napkins. Can't remember if you posted on the dinnerware spam thread. Wellll...I read and appreciated all your comments, and I've been thinking. We are changing the kitchen/family room walls from pale green (which went with our horrid, icky pickled oak cabinets and--ugh--white 4x4 tiled countertops) to yellow. All the windows and doors will have 3" cherry frames. I am getting rid of the cornice boxes and the lace curtains. I want a clean, bright, contemporary look. I think that even though I LOVE the AB and Hurricane, there just isn't any place for blue. I really do like the rooster plates bc they are SO bright and cheery, and I got matching coffee cups, too :-) I think a gold and black granite will add drama to what is really a very simple kitchen. Plus, I have to paint my fish tank gold. It's verdigris. Wonder if I have to take the fish OUT? The house has NO style of its own. But the kitchen will :-) I was in such a tizzy until I read your comments and started thinking! THANK YOU ALL!

Thank you all for sharing the information. My husband says he likes Fiesta ware because he likes heavy weight, but I had to veto it because I'm the one who works around the kitchen and ends up carrying all the dishes. I will check out the dinnerware you all posted here. However, I also want to find a robust set just for casual gathering when our best friends bring their kids who like to swipe things off the table. I jumped on it and got myself a few sets. I like the fact that they are oven/microwave/dishwasher/freezer safe. Not sure if DH will like the light weight dinnerware, but that'll get us started in our new kitchen (I didn't keep any of our old stuff) while I slowly shopping for the right choice.

Thanks, Linda! I haven't seen it anywhere without the gold trim. Where did you find a plain version? I've been doing some research on the makers' mark, and based on what I've found, my set dates 1891-1899. Cool the the gold initials may be of the person who did the painting. It visible on all of the pieces. The butter pats, which were probably the least used item, are all clearly marked with an N, however. So the painting was done by at least two people, H and N :) i have been working on cleaning up some of the stained pieces, following the advice in Hanson's book "Cleaning Historic Staffordshire Tansferware," and they are coming out beautifully! I wish I had taken pictures of some of the stained pieces before I started, as the difference is truly amazing! One thing I find interesting in my search to find more pieces, is that at some pint the shape of the pitcher, gravy boat, creamer, and tea cup changed. But I've yet to figure out when that change occurred. Mine or more rounded than the few I've been able to locate online.

Very pretty set of dishes. I could have a different set for each month of the year - just a nice little service for 4 for my husband and I to enjoy. I just love dinnerware

Glad you found some more goodies!! Where to put them? If I have to buy another bin I'll scream. I am sitting here surrounded by them, waiting to be carried down to the basement which is getting pretty full! This is really a sickness!
Lynne, I agree. A dish of the month club! How about 7 sets, one for each day, and then rotate!

I LOVE the roosters, and would gladly join the dish of the month club...I only need a couple of place settings of each one...hey, I know......we'll each buy a service for four and trade two amoung us....how's that (I'm kidding.....sorta')
Actually, if I would get things straightened out, I probably have enough for at least half a year!!! Yikes!!

Delph, its a good thing I have a small kitchen, it keeps my rooster collection under control. ;o)
I like the ideas of a dish of the month club, LOL. And Lynne, having a new set of 4 each month sounds pretty cool too. This from someone who just found out a year ago that she was a dishaholic!!! The things this Forum does to one.
Betty, I've not actually tried my hand at a pretty tablesetting. I love seeing all the ones on here but get so intimidated at doing one myself. I've bought stuff just to try it, and joke about setting a table for an invisible guest....tho since I'd be taking photos for the gang here, guess y'all are the invisibile guests. LOL
My DH wouldn't even notice if he was eating off fine china or a paper plate! And he wouldn't care. Which is good, since he likes pretty simple food and I hate cooking! I do it, but only to feed him and my Dad. I'm so in awe of our Kathleen-the Kitchen Queen and her gorgeous settings with food that makes me gain weight just looking at it. I'm afraid the Betty Crocker gene went straight from my Mom to my daughter, sure missed me altogether. LOL

I have a beautiful service for 8 set of Christmas Pfatzgraff and I ALMOST bought a really pretty service for 4 - 20 piece cheapie set that was 1/2 price after Christmas for $12.00. I am still kicking myself but just could not justify another set of Christmas dishes. I think I just might get a pretty spring set tho - my Correlle ware is well over 25 years old - no pieces chipped or broken but it is boring - lol......

Lynne, that Correlle stuff sure lasts. And some very pretty patterns. My old set of dishes came from Walmart, the salad plates have a rooster on them and the dinner plate just a has a country heart border. But I've had them about 10 yrs I think. So a new set to look at is very welcome, especially as pretty as these are!
That Xmas set for $12 sounded good. I don't own any Xmas dishes and would have bought them I think.

Karen, beautiful dishes from your DD. Oh boy do I know about DT!!! I go in there for one or two items, things I need around the house for cleaning & never leave there without spending at least over $20.00!!!

Guess it could be worse though, at least everything is only a DOLLAR!!! LOL

Karen, I just love your new rooster dishes. They are so pretty. And you shouldn't be intimidated at posting pics of table settings. You do a beautiful job on everything else you show us. Go for it, girl!
