pix from Bill V and Mongo in one place?

Hi,

With all Bill V's fabulous work and pix, wouldn't it be great if he could post a whole bunch of them? ....I know many are around...but all in one place....or are they already archived somewhere?

I believe Mongo has great pix, too?

Just a thought....

Well, as for mine, if you don't mind some misc. fishing and family pics, go to photobucket.com, and do a search on Bill_Vincent . I've made my account public, and they're all (atleast all the ones I've used in here) there in one place. :-)

Wow, thanks Bill! I just looked through them all. Can you tell me where you get a backsplash like Laura's? Or are there any good sites on the web for interesting or pretty cooktop backsplashes?

"My walls are going to be painted tongue and groove pickwick paneling (v. similar to beadboard), so I don't think I can tile to that--or can I?" You can tile on wood. But it does depend on the tile that you are using as well as the intended adhesive. Some of this is personal preference, what I mean is that if using "regular sized porcelain tile" sure, I'd not have a problem going over properly prepared wood. For glass mosaic? No. The better bet would be to mark out the area for the backsplash. Then come in a half-inch or so from that perimeter line and mark a new cut line. In that area instead of your wood paneling, insert a fill piece of cement backer board. Pad out the backer board so the face is flush with the wood paneling. Then you can do whatever you want on that space. Glass, ceramic, stone, mosaic, non-mosaic. And you can use the appropriate adhesive. With the backer board being slightly smaller than the tiled area, your top course and side column tiles will lap over the backerboard/paneling seam for a nice transition. If the edges of your intended tiles don't have a level of finish appropriate for exposure, then you could use a border or frame (wood or tile) to contain the design, just like in the photo above. Bill, thank you for your response. I'd always thought of caulk as not being much of a good fix for most things, because it never seems to hold up well or for long. Wouldn't this be the case here, or is tile different, or is there a special caulk used with tile that you're referring to that is more durable that that used between a tub and a tile wall? After thinking about this some more, it's clear that I need to consider Plan B and do the L configuration if it's to work at all because of the tile situation. So the next question is: --How far back would he likely have put the mud base? When we remodeled our old place, the mud went to the wall at the back of the vanity. --Is this what is normally done? If the tiler slapped down 12 x 12 sheets of the 2" tile, there probably is about 5" under the existing cabinet. If the mud base goes to the back of this vanity, that would give me another 13", giving me ~18" total depth, and I have enough leftover sheets of tile to cover this. --So if the mud base is there, shouldn't we be able to lay tile on it? --If the mud base is too rough, can it be either ground down in the high places or filled in with the setting compound? --How deep can the setting compound be and still do its job properly? Bill, Removed all floor planks and installed plywood, glad we chose that option. Will begin the Kerdi application this week. Question: Can I Redguard my niches (2) and Kerdi the rest of the shower or do you advise against that? I am afraid of all the cuts necessary when waterproofing the niches with Kerdi. My concern is them working together (Kerdi & Redguard). If I can Redguard the niches would I waterproof the niches first then apply the Kerdi? Please let me know what you suggest is the best approach. Thanks again for your help.

Well fooey. I checked out the Laticrete site, and I can't find any of their thinsets within a hundred mile radius of here. The big box places only carry their grouts. Also, instead of buying from hakatai directly this time (the first time I used them I purchased from them online), I am going with a local tile place where I purchased the argilla a few years ago. Although an avid net shopper, I have to give some of the local guys credit. They have been super helpful, and now carry the hakatai also. In fact, I was shocked that they're selling me only 7 sheets rather than forcing a whole box on me, and its almost $5 cheaper per sheet from them! Since they carry a lot of underlayment materials, I'm going to ask what they carry and would recommend for both the large travertine and mesh-backed glass. Any other thinset product you could recommend that I might be able to find around here? Looks like I might not be able to avoid an admix after all. I'm not so sure why I'm afraid of it, other than I just feel like keeping it simple will be better for an amateur like me.

I just take Bill's pictures and use photoshop to make the grout lines look more jiggy and jaggy, add a few scratches to his glass tile installations, then repost them as my own.

No one's the wiser!

Seriously, very seldom do I take progress pictures of installations. About the only time is if it's for a magazine article.

I've never taken pics of finished installations for portfolio purposes, though.

If there's a thread and I'm doing something regarding that topic, then I have been known to squeeze off a few shots to post, but I really don't think I post pics that often.

As for Laura's backsplash, she's an installer up in the Seattle area. Actually, as is plainly obvious from that pic, she's an ARTIST in the Seattle area! She MADE that design, from scratch. It was NOT storebought. Many of her installations are like that.

I have looked through your album in the photobucket. The bathrooms you have done are absolutely beautiful. I really like the look of schluter strips. Do you know whate the price on them is and whether a tiler would charge more for their installation? Thanks

The only extra I charge if I'm using them is the cost of the strip. It takes no more time than bullnose, nor any special expertise. The price on them all depends on the finish, but for the most part, they run between about 18.00 and 32.00 for an 8 foot length.

How very Ivy, like going to school "in New Haven" ;)

It also begs the question: what magazines has your work appeared in? I'm guessing various "Fine"s, yes? :) Please share; I'd really love to see how you've been written up. I can't exactly do a publication search for "mongo", can I? :) Just titles and dates of publication would be so appreciated.
