OK to use pedestal sink against painted wall?

I'm trying to plan a complete renovation of a small full bath - about 5' x 5'6". We have a 1931 center hall colonial, so I am going for a classic white look. I am planning to use Grazia Essenze tiles in white, probably combining subway tiles below an accent strip with square tiles above. The bath is currently tiled in the shower/tub area and around the entire room up to chair rail height. I was going to replicate this, but friends advised me to tile only in the shower/tub area. I'm going to use a pedestal sink, and I'm worried that if it is against a painted, rather than tiled, wall, there will be water damage. I have seen some pedestal sinks with backsplashes, but I'm not sure I like them. Can I get away with a sink against a painted wall?

Also, does the pedestal sink need to be grouted (attached) to the wall, whether it is tiled or painted?
