A/C Problems

I have a 1996 Explorer. The A/C only comes up when the fan speed is on its highest. It's not doing anything at the other speeds. Would that be a belt problem?

Could you rephrase the question?

Are you talking about the blower motor inside the car?

Yes; when we're sitting in the car, and turn on both the A/C and fan speed controls, no cool air (or any air for that matter) comes out unless the fan speed control is on its highest.

Season adjustment should be able to be made in 10% increments, on my unit each bar results in a 100% increase. Example: watering time is set to a base 10 minutes, increasing the seasonal watering by 1 bar should add 1 minute to the total watering time but instead it is adding 10 minutes. Can anyone help me figure this one out... Thanks

I didn't know they had fuses either! You must have spent a very uncomfortable weekend-plus! We have the kind of AC that goes in the windows. When fall temps arrived at the end of September, we took them out. Of course now we have had record breaking heat for the past several days. It's always something. Thank goodness for fans!!! Patti

Depending of what type of indoor unit it is, it might be the fan relay or fan sequencer. There are a couple older indoor units that use sequencers that tend to stick. Might check that out.

If you cannot spin the motor while on, either the motor or capacitor is bad. Replace the cap. It is less than $10 for a single value cap. Copy the values on the side of the cap. If it has 3 poles, it is a dual cap, if only 2 poles it is a single pole cap. Look for the smaller value somewhere between 3-10 mfd. The voltage is probably 370vac. You can replace one side of the cap and leave the other side. You will need a common wire with 2 female push on spade connectors. or replace the entire dual cap. It will work the same either way.

OK, then you are simply referring to a problem in the blower resistor circuit. (Resistor assembly, wiring, or control head)

Is it easily fixable by a mechanic? We can bring it in when it's scheduled for inspection. Not a great rush now.

Yes. The hardest part will be access to whatever component has failed, and for an experienced person, that's not a big deal at all.
