New Charger/Plates & BDay Table

Didn't have to work this afternoon at the office so started cleaning one of the spare BR. Ran across some of DM old wrapping paper.hum should I keep in or throw it. So many neat designs and it's a little sentimental still! It's the kind that use to come in sheets all folded and packaged. Anyone remember that?

Well, I had these clear charges with purple centers in there that I never use so...cut out the Happy Birthday with all different colors, (thinking I could use any color of dishes and cp with them) brushed on some Mod Podge and applied them underneath. This project was fast and anyone could make them. You could also use wrapping paper under those clear ones Jeanne showed and throw it away and not have to store it.

The bonus is the price of wrapping paper compared to scapbooking paper. Or wouldn't it be neat to use clear plates and just cut some different centers to use under them? I know I will not be passing up any clear plates for awhile. What do you think? I have some to try but not now.lol

After I was done I decided to set a table for DSIL BDay on Friday. But as you know I got alot of chargers on sale after Christmas at Walmart. DH had painted a set of lavendar ones and they fit under the BDay plates. So I set a table using both.

For Christmas I received a white and also a green baking dish so used this for part of my cp. I should of used it for my lasagna but already had it in another dish.

Wrapping paper. Of course!

And it's an easy way to insure you can get all the sheets you want (and at the length you want) in the same color/pattern.

And the centerpiece with the little geese is so sweet.

Well, guys, it's Sunday night and I didn't make it to the house one time this weekend. I slept late both days and walked 3 miles in a walk a thon for diabetes research today. Moving a little felt good. I used to walk 5 miles a day, back in the good old days. I really need to make time to do that more often. I am a little more rested and actually feeling almost normal, but unfortunately it is back to work tomorrow and the insulation is nowhere close to finished. That's ok because I can't get the srocker there anyway. Jodie, each little thing that gets finished helps me envision actually living there. DH and I are killing ourselves together at the house, so if I am at the house he usually is too. We had a heart to heart and he is actually being much more supportive during my breakdown. Nancy in Mich, I think I am going to do exactly as you suggested. I ordered appliances about 2 hours away and some couldn't be delivered, so I have to pick them up. I think I am going to take a friend with me and hide in a hotel for the weekend when they come in. That should be any day now. Thanks, everyone. I was really cracking last week. I don't know why everything was getting to me. I always have a lot on my plate. I'm the girl that did her student teaching pregnant and went back to finish when dd was 11 days old. I knew she was sleeping the whole time I was gone and it was then or never. I'm a glutton for punishment. Anyway, I know I'm doing way too much, but it's not like I've never been busier. I'm usually a lot stronger than this. I just don't know why I am losing it mentally now of all times. Amyway thanks for all the support during my nervous breakdown. I hope it is over, although this has happened 20 times in the last month. I cry at the drop of a hat. I'm going to bed now, hopefully to avoid breakdown #368.

Luvs, it will work!! I have a French antique armoire with an arched 'crown' that I use in my LR for the tv. Since I collect antique/old books, I use them as lifts. I find it's as much about the old book as it is about the item that setting on it. I do this all over the house, including my kitchen hutch~there's always a hint of the book showing. You can use newer books also, but I would remove the dust cover,just cause it looks pretier. LOL Sandi, did you look in the sale aisle? The store I went to had two big stacks, in a lot of different colors, mostly dark from what I remember. There may have been some metallics, but I didn't look thru them. Maybe dark red? Tam, I can so totally relate! I think of my LR as English old world, my sitting room/kitchen more shabby chic, and my MBR as Victorian. I guess you could call my decorating style schitzophrenic(sp?), LOL but it works for me. I don't have a hutch in my DR either, but have concocted a buffet out of two plaster colums and a piece of glass~it works great for holding food during dinners. Another 'some day' item. Would love to see pics of everyones hutch, armoire, cabinets! I will try to remember to get batteries for the camera......and vitamin C! LOL patty_cakes

kathleen, 99% percent of my dinners are for only the amount of people that can sit at my table. The only time I have multiple desserts is at a large holiday, and I will still serve them seperate, I give each person the choice of the dessert that I have prepared. I guess what I am saying is that I don't serve desserts buffet style (lack of room which I explain below). I pre-assemble as much as possible of the dessert on the small glass plate or the covered cardboard disk. Then I store the "sets" in a large tupperware container in the refrig. So when I am ready to serve the dessert course all I have to do is pop it on the candle base, and bring out. This pre assembly saves me a lot of stress and time in the kitchen. At the last minute I can add the whipped cream or what ever I need to finish it off, but this only takes moments out of my time. It saves the guest having to cut, slice into pies and cakes themselves. Plus, for me, its a touch of the dramatic, they don't have to lift a finger, I have it all done ahead of time and it makes people feel pampered. I have a few pics of food with people in the shots, but not that many, I kind of feel funny snapping shots when people are eatting. Plus, to tell you the truth, I would never post pictures on the internet that had people's faces in them, to protect their privacy as well as mine. Sorry Don't get me wrong, doing a dessert buffet is beautiful, I think there is nothing more beautiful that a well designed dessert buffet, but with my tiny home, I just don't have the room for it, my kitchen is barely 10' x 8' so it's really a "one butt kitchen" and not only that, it's a ugly kitchen LOL I dearly would love to be able to do a dessert spread like that sometimes, but at this time I can't. So I make the best out of a bad situation and serve seperately. My way of making lemonade out of lemons LOL Here is a really old picture of me trying out my "dessert candlesticks on the table, I had just purchased them so I was just playing with them at the time that's why nothing is in them.

Not sure about the red or black. Black would disappear into your lovely dark wood tabletop. The plates are really beautiful and need a charger that will enhance without stealing the show. If they were mine (and I wish they were!) I would be tempted to use either a pewter charger or antiqued mirror. You can find mirror chargers for a pretty good price and antique them yourself, if you're crafty. Pewter may seem like an odd pairing with the gold rim, but I think silver and gold look lovely together, especially in a holiday setting. Pewter need not be blackened or heavy looking. Pewter will set off the gold rim too, unlike a gold charger where the rim will not be allowed to shine (literally and figuratively). It looks nice with glassware and flatware. And pewter is an investment that can become a family heirloom. Pewter can be used with virtually any china, regardless of pattern/color. I will most definitely invest in pewter chargers someday. I inherited 2 different sets of china from my grandmother (nothing fancy but both sets have gold rims) so I have also pondered this same charger question. Here's the caveat: I know pewter is really expensive. You mentioned having a flexible budget and spending a little more since you only need 6, so I thought I would present it as an option. It certainly is not the only look that would work, just throwing it out there:)

punk...I got a Christmas plate gift like that a few yrs back...the gal mod-podged Christmas-y fabric on the back of a clear plate & then filled the plate w/homemade cookies...it was great! It was even hand-washable...don't know about wrapping paper w/mod-podge???

So your wheels are turning on this!! Love the look of your lavendar chargers w/those plates. Does all the "geese" have something to do with SIL's b'day????Just wondering! Pretty stemware & the grapes (or purple berries?) in the centerpc & in each napkin...looks good! TFS! Jeanne S.

OA, I only had part of a sheet so I cut out the BD. It might be interesting to see what it would cost to use a laminating machine to make some.

Thanks Karen, you do like purple. It was one of our school colors and I really like it in most shades. SIL is a hunter so I used the geese in the cp.

Jeanne, I only have the satin mod podge but I think I could buy the hard one and it would be washable. I will look for this next time I go to town.

I had traded a gal years ago for a couple plates and I don't think I ever used them. They were western. Haven't seen them so not sure where they ended up.

NanaK, DSIL is so laid back that he wouldn't care if the table was pink. Glad you enjoyed the cp and nr and bears.The one bear is all about oil changes so thought it would go for a man thing.

That made a nice celebration table for her birthday. Isn't if fun to use things in unexpected ways and just be able to enjoy them? Love how you always use lots of candlelight too. You always seem to have a matching set of silverware for your tables--was that planned or just a happy accident? ;o)

MM, thanks, glad you enjoyed this. I added the grapes for a little more purple on the table.

Luvs, I set this table for our Son In Law and they all showed up today so we celebrated. We have training next week so may spend the night and celebrate again down there on Fri.

I'm sure you thought the lavendar candles looked pink in the picture. I have several sets of colored flatware so it works out pretty well for my tables.

I like the contrast with the purple, but I also like that you can use any color under and it will look different ea time.
I did a project with my kids at school using the clear plates and mod podge..I used their photos and also scraps of wrapping paper or wall paper - which they collaged on...I like how you used the Birthday wrapping paper - very clever idea and it looks great.
Your CP turned out very cute and I like all the touches with the candles. It gives your table a nice warm glow.
Glad you got to celebrate with your DSIL today. He must have felt real special sitting at this table.
