Can I paint 'rope' tiles that I can't remove?

I have some mauve (1990's) rope tiles set into my tub surroud. It's a garden tub with 4 x 4 white tiles on the ledges, front, and about 6 tiles high around the back wall. About 2/3 up there is a line of rope style tiles that are 6" long and 1" high aorund 3 sides of the tub. Those are mauve/rose color. Who knew they'd be dated?

We don't want to attempt to re-tile the whole tub area, but I'm sick of the mauve "rope". Would like to go in the beige family. How do I paint it? Can it look good, and not like a 3rd grader painted it? Are there people I could hire, and what would it cost? I'd like to do it myself but I'm nervous.

If it matters, these tiles rarely, if ever, get wet.

Thanks
