Not much to do. Workers comp should take care of the employee. The law should take care of the idiot who set the trap. The employee can also sue the owner who set the trap in civil court if he chooses...I would if it were me.

A single claimlike that on the workers comp rates would easily cause a cancellation with the current employers program, and subsequent re-write at 16-20% of the payroll as compared to 8% for a clean record.

Of course this didn't happen in the USA, so who knows what their laws are like and if they even have workmans comp.

"If" that would have happened to me. There is no workmans comp coverage for me. I'm not elegible for it as a sole proprietor.

If You Could Re-Do Your Garden Shed, What Would You Do Different?

Oh boy ... that's definitely a loaded question, but thank heavens my husband doesn't read these forums! I'd had it all planned out (the shed, that is), but it was not cost effective. Oh all right - $2000.00 IS a bit ridiculous, I suppose. We modified the design and took a few shortcuts to significantly drop the cost, got a few things from friends ("free" works for me!), and ended up w/ a really cool shed, inside & out. It's large enough to hold all of my garden tools/accessories/books/etc. Plenty of space to move around, lots of counter space for various tasks ... I actually spend quite a bit of time out there on the weekends, even in cold temps (propane heater). BUT ... the number one thing that I would do different is the roof. While corrugated tin LOOKS absolutely fantastic, rustic, etc., it doesn't hold heat worth a darn! Of course, I can't possibly say anything about it at this point - the shed is built, and I'M the idiot that fell in love w/ the overall look of a tin roof! *heavy sigh* Guess I shot myself in the foot, so to speak!

After seeing your latest pics, ans re-reading your OP - I would say the following: 1. You PURCHASED the piece of stone for the Island - it was your property 2. THEY suggested that you wait on the island 2 1/2 years ago, and on THEIR insistance - took responsibility for the piece (still YOUR property) 3. What they are trying to give you as the island made from "your piece" (if the small sample in the pics is what the stone SHOULD look like...) does NOT match with the sample. Based on these three criteria - I would say you have a case, and that your Fabricator now has the responsibility to "deliver" - if he can't to your satisfaction, you'll need to work out fair compensation for loss and de-fault of contract. Hopefully it won't go there - I'm hoping that your guy will make things right and give you what you feel is acceptable... TO YOU !!!! I would hope that your Fabricator can find a stone with waaay more of a match to the sample, and then everyone wins. My guess is - they lost track of your "piece" AND either broke it or fabbed it (the original) for something else, or they just lost track of it and it's still there - burried in their scrap pile.... I work with shops all over the world in my business, and I cant tell you how many other fabricators are in this general group....... EVERYBODY makes mistakes now and then !!! LOL - But..... you gotta hols your guy's feet to the fire and have him fab up an island that YOU will be happy with. Seriously - I'd wait and see what he can do, then lets evaluate your options Not trying to be "self promoting" here, but you can e-mail or call if you need to discuss... www.azschoolofrock.com - I'm hoping that everything will turn out OK for you at the end of the day...... hth kevin

If you have a Ton of home-made compost, like I do, what would you do?

I don't have real compost but I do have leaf mulch that has really broken down over the couple of years it has been in a windrow out in my back yard. The town brought me 8 large trucks ( approximately 200 - 250 cubic yards) that had been vacuumed out of the gutters. I use it as mulch every time I plant something new in my gardens about 6-8" deep and my soil is easy to plant into now and the weeds are few and far between and easy to pull because they are only rooted in loose mulch. I like it so much that I'll probably e-mail the Superintendent of Public Works about November and ask for about 5 more truckloads to replace what I've used. I almost feel guilty about how easy it is.

If it is a secondary bathroom, who uses it? If your wife uses it, I'd put in whatever she likes. If guests use it, I'd think about their needs. If you had to use it while you renovate your main bath, what would you like? What feature in your main bath would you miss? If it doesn't matter, it's still a good value to make the wife happy. If she wants a frameless glass shower wall, can I strongly suggest that whatever the side walls are tiled with, you try to continue it out into the rest of the bathroom or at least make it the same color. And do the same for the floor; whatever you choose for the shower floor, continue it out into the rest of the bathroom, even if you have a low-curb shower. Try to eliminate contrast between the shower area and the main room. The frameless shower is a new critter that does best with that continuity. If you or your wife wants contrast, the back wall is an option; if it is darker than the sides, it will appear to recede slightly. A feature I really like in a bathroom is a bidet seat on the toilet. The toilet-paper hoarding for COVID made me a convert to bidets. Now the toilets at work feel like outhouses by comparison. I like a wall between toilet and vanity for any bathroom with multiple users. I like a heated floor including the shower and a heat lamp just outside the shower to keep from getting chilled. Some people really love heated towel bars for comfort and faster drying of towels for less mildew. An anti-fog heated mirror and a really great vent are nice for shaving or makeup after the shower.

Hi John. Funny how the U.S. protection laws work or lack of them i should say. I was stupid enough to start my own
business many years ago. I hadn't gotten my registation for
my company name processed yet and i got a letter in the mail 3 days later from the compensation board. We are compelled by law to carry compensation insurance no matter what business and also a surity bond. They will
allow a $150,000.00 bond but recommend one million. we can
also get E.I. insurance but we have to set it up with the
government and pay our own premiums. Every dealer i ever
worked for and any automovive company i worked for i had to
be bondable or no job. That is one reason you will almost
never find shoddy work or a company ripping off a customer
in canada. If a claim comes out of your bond you are as good as retired for ever. Not too many companies will hire
you, if any, and the company's bond premium goes sky high.
so high that some go under. If any company and i mean all
have 3 or more compensation claims in one year there is an
investigation. Same with the E.I. boys. If there are more
that 3 employees quit in one year there is an investigation
and your premiums go up. If that boody trap thing happened
up here it would be condidered a crime scene. The comp. boys, work place and safty boys, R.C.M.P. , city police,
employment standard boys, and the labour board get involved. We are VERY WELL protected in the job force. Even
if your self employed.
