Does a replaced part of an appliance have a one year warranty?

I have a 3 year old GE Monogram dishwasher with another bad touchpad. This part was replaced about 6 months ago. Does anyone know if that specific part would carry its own one year warranty or so I have to keep repurchasing new touchpads since the original warranty is up?

I would think that since it was purchased from GE on a service call that the new part would be guaranteed for a year. I am probably engaging in wishful thinking though.

It really depends - sometimes new parts/repairs are only warranted for 90 days. You need to call them and find out.

In 99.9 % of the appliance world, the warranty only covers the whole appliance, not individual replaced parts. If you had a 1 year warranty, and part X was replaced 10 months into the warranty, then if part X fails before that 1 year warranty is up, it's covered. If it fails 14 months after purchase, even if part X was replaced at 10 months, any further parts and labor are up to you to pay for Unless you bought an extended warranty. Then everything is covered for the period of the extended warranty. However, if your appliance is replaced entirely under either the manufacturer's warranty or the extended warranty, that warranty is considered fulfilled by that replacement and there is no warranty at all on the replacement appliance.

NSCHLOSS - I installed (18 months ago) similar to the pictures above, EXCEPT I went one step further. Where she has the blank panel above the two drawers, I had my cabinet maker do a third drawer there. It was tight, and we weren't sure if it would end up being a fake drawer or a working drawer until we did the actual install. But, I really wanted a utensil drawer there if at all possible. And I got one... when you pull the drawer open, the actual drawer behind it is only 2" or so deep, the front makes it look like the normal 6-7" deep. Just deep enough to put non-combustible turners, tongs, large spoons, etc. for cooking. I don't keep rubber scrapers or even wooden spoons in there just to be safe. So, hows this been working in reality? I would defintely still do it for the handiness of having the utensils there. Every once in a great while, the jumbled utensils catch briefly beneath - but a quick jiggle and that addresses that. And sometimes, when I have three burners or more going, I will open up this drawer to aid in ventilation - not that it needs it necessarily - but, just to be cautious. It never seems to get very hot beneath the cooktop. Other than that, it's perfect. I'd definitely do it again... Although, I will caution - should you have a problem with the cooktop within the warranty period, I suppose they could argue that you have an improper install and deny any warranty claim....I decided to take that risk. Have you contacted the manufacturer directly? You may get a different response. We've purchased three new houses in which the appliances had been installed more than six months before we closed (once it was about a year.) I called the manufacturers and explained that we were the first owners of a new home, gave our closing date and registered the appliances. In every case (involving GE, Whirlpool, and JennAir) our the clock started on the warranty on our date of purchase, not the builder's purchase date. Twice when I called, it was because there was a problem with an appliance. When asked the age of the unit, I said (truthfully) I did not know. The CSR seemed to be able to determine its age by the serial #. Once I offered to fax a copy of our closing statement, to verify when we bought the house, but the CSR decided to take me at my word. Maybe we just got lucky, but it's worth a try.

I think what Amex does is double the manufacturer's warranty. So if that warranty covers in-home service, so does your Amex extension... otherwise not. Same goes for which parts the manufacturer's warranty covers. Amex will extend coverage on those parts, but won't help at all on anything not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So basically, you should do two things: (1) Call Amex to verify exactly how the warranty extension works; and (2) Call the manufacturers (or sellers) of every appliance to find out exactly what's covered (the entire appliance, or just certain parts? And what about labor? And does it cover in-home service? etc.). THEN you will be able to make a sensible decision. Oh, if you want, it might also be worth a few minutes on google to get an idea of how much replacement parts cost. I've heard that, for example, Aga range parts are much more expensive than replacement parts for other mid/high-end ranges. (Don't quote me on that, but I've heard it, and it's just an example of the fact that different brands may be more of a pain for you to fix without a warranty.)

$170 is a great price to clean the coil - I'd look over the blower-wheel as well, since if one is dirty, the other is likely to also be dirty, and they both have the same effect - lowered efficiency due to reduced airflow. If the system is otherwise functional, I'd agree to keep it around myself - I also believe the tax-credit has inflated prices - and better, more efficient systems are being released constantly. That "tax credit qualified" unit is likely to become a bottom-shelf unit in a couple of years. FWIW, you didn't mention insulation - a 1993 home in a climate like Dallas may not have much attic insulation. I had cellulose blown into my attic to take it from R-19 to R-49, and the difference in comfort was amazing. It also made a noticeable dent in my cooling bills. If you really want to get some of that tax-credit money, and lower the workload of that existing system, I'd think about blowing in some additional insulation. For my 1800 sq/ft home the cost was about $800 - half of which would come back from the feds with the tax credit.

Thanks live wire and weissman. I am so over digital touchpads. They always seem to cause problems. I have had 2 dishwasher and 1 Advantium touchpad die in my 3 year old appliances. (And I don't use spray cleaners-the repair guy warned me never to spray right on touchpads).

Where are all the old fashioned knobs and buttons that lasted decades?

Today my Advantium dial stopped working too. Looks like I'll be ordering some parts from GE tonight.

If you pay for a part or repair then you will get a warranty on the part or repair for some period of time, usually 90 days. live_wire_oak is correct about parts/repairs done under the original warranty.

It also may depend upon whom the part was purchased/installed. I buy my parts from repairclinic.com and they have a decent warranty. The local repair person if he does the work only warranties the part and service for 60 days.

cleo - you might want to have your elect. system checked out too. DO you have problems with other electronic items int eh house , or is it just appliances?

Thanks for your responses everyone. I am in NJ so I'll look online later for specifics about the parts warranty. I am not happy with the dishwasher anyway so I am waiting on just getting a new Miele. For now, I can use the dishwasher if I flip the circuit breaker off and on. This resets the wash cycle to normal so I can use it. During the wash cycle, it switches to CHina or Plastics. Eventually, it gets stuck on Rinse Only. It is the exact same thing that happened last fall. The start button still works; it is just the cycle buttons that died.

antsI don't have any other problems that I know of. It seems like my high hats burn out pretty quickly (every 4-6 months) but I think that's a common complaint. All my kitchen electric was done by a great electrician and is new so I think it is okay. I have found a few incorrect things in my walls elsewhere (missing junction boxes, no grounds) but the kitchen has all new circuits.
