Winter 'Winter Frost' Tablescape ...Brrrr! (pic heavy)

Today I put tog a t'scape with my Pfaltzgraff "Winterfrost" dishes that sit out on my counter over the holidays & winter mos...put them away in March...when Spring comes!

I bought these back in Dec. 03 ...a 4 place setting & then have added serving pcs until they were discont. in 2006...since then I've come across some pcs once in awhile like the goblets last yr at a TS...now I bit the bullet & bought a NIB 4 place setting on ebay...they came yesterday in great shape! I am so pleased!!!

You can see why I would be drawn to them...the piney branches...the box they came in captures it all (from 2002):

And the goblets ... along with some Sparkling Water in a beautiful blue bottle I will use in my gardens come Spring...a gift from a friend:

The holder is silver-colored (or plated, I don't know)...anyway, a GS or TS find this summer.

Here's the stainless flatware I got for Christmas ...Oneida "Tortola"...I really like it & it washes beautifully in the dishwasher! I worked & worked with napkins & decided to use them altho they are a bit "ivory" looking instead of more white like the "Winter Frost" (napkins purchased before Christmas clearance $5 for 4 at Kohls):

The napkin rings I bought shortly after buying the original dinnerware. S&P shakers were ebay finds last yr...reasonable, too...I shared them with you last March:

T'cloth I found at B,B&Beyond a few yrs ago...thought it would work so good with "Winter Frost" ...the blues are a bit diff ...but I like it:

At an after Christmas sale, I bought a couple berry/pine sprigs & used them in the centerpc...moved those pottery snowmen around (again)...I love 'em w/the "Winter Frost"...

...and "pinecone" candles:

Here's the polar bear peeking out ...part of the dip set...there's lots of extra pcs that can be added to this collection but since they are discont. I'll keep watching at TS's:

Oh, Jeanne, this is absolutely charming. It's heavy (pottery like feeling as opposed to thinner china), yet delicate (brought about by the pattern). I love this so much. Even though the pieces seem to be from the same pattern, they don't look "matchy-matchy" like some do when the whole pattern is used at one time.

I think I've seen your snowmen before. Loved them then. Love them now. I see that your grapevine tree is lit in the corner.

I like the candles too. Whenever I buy candles that are a special shape, I never seem to be able to burn them down. I save them and save them, until I throw them out, still in one piece. Strange, huh?

Well, you've done a very nice, very inviting setting.

Just another very delightful place setting - everything co ordinates so well down the last detail. The snowmen are perfect as centerpieces - TFS .....

Agreed! Josh and mike have both been called lucky because their plants flourish, but they're not lucky at all, and I can understand why they might take offense at the label. There may be elements of luck that affect their growing, but calling them lucky is little different than calling Lance Armstrong lucky every time he wins a race. These guys are simply well-skilled. Luck pretty much only has a place of any importance in the growing experience of the beginners or those less skilled. I'm not talking about hailstorms or plants being blown off railings, or hordes of descending insects - I'm talking about having the ability to consistently produce high quality plants in spite of imperfect cultural conditions. There is no luck involved in that ability. This is just my opinion, but I don't put a lot of value on experience in many cases, either. A wood chopper, having wielded an axe for years and claims title to being a star axeman, pales in his ability to produce cord-wood at a pace equal to that of even a novice chainsaw operator. Those who practice the same methods day in and day out, even if they are at the pinnacle of perfection for those methods, are, w/o considering there might be a better way, gaining nothing by adding more years to the total of their experience. IOW - they're parked - stuck in a rut. Guys like Josh and Mike, and lots of others here, are focusing on knowledge. They don't cling tightly to this idea or that idea. If something makes better sense - they try it. They are open-minded and willing to make adjustments. They actually think the same way that I do, in that acquiring knowledge about growing is more important than actual experience ..... but hold on before you disagree ..... they also understand that using their practical experience - practical application, to validate that knowledge is what has propelled them forward. They learn the facts, then let their experience prove them true. If their observations don't match what they've learned, they mistrust and reexamine their observations instead of inventing new science to fit what they think they observed. THAT, is what makes a grower good in the shortest amount of time possible. How many growers with much more 'experience' than Mike or Josh have they passed sitting in a rut at the side of the road and shouting at them that they'll never make it to the top of the hill because they're 'doing it all wrong'? Where they came from is where a lot of others still sit. We can look up to them or look away from them, but they're still pretty darned close to the top, and I'd put considerable value on what they say. I only mentioned Mike & Josh because Jodi and JJ did in their posts previous, but there are a lot of others here that are free from being chained to the same spot and also deserve a lot of credit. Silvia loribee2: Thank you for your kind comments! Pnbrown: That is definitely a benefit, although we can get huge aphid and cabbage looper populations as well as hornworms come spring. Glib: I haven't noticed a significant difference in the soil temperature inside the brick raised beds as opposed to the outside beds...especially with heavy mulch and shade cloth. It probably is a little hotter which is why I chose to do the other beds outside much shorter and with river rock - I wanted to do sunken beds but digging out all that dirt didn't appeal to me. Franktank: I wish! Although they grow pretty well here, they do take a little bit of extra care because of our frosts/freezes. We had a 3 days straight of 28 degrees (low) this winter...and it stayed that temp for 4 hours. We have 6 citrus trees and a pomegranate but I'd LOVE some tropicals. Borderbarb: I started this garden in October 2009 - only had 5 beds in the cage and grew a small winter garden. Spring 2010 I developed the 90ft planter outside the cage and added one more bed inside the cage. Then October 2010 I added the 5 beds outside the cage - The soil outside the cage where I'm using all native soil amended with TONS of compost is just now starting to get excellent...dark, rich and surprisingly fluffy for clay. Everything is on automatic drip systems so watering is easy and extremely efficient. I hope he gets inspired - Phoenix is a great place to garden..something can be seeded, grown, and harvested year round. Brookw: haha, a snow cone maybe..

Very nice plants Jacklord! I am always very jealous to see the prices of tropicals in nursuries down south since they are often half the price (sometimes even less than that) than the prices they go for at nursuries here. There are a few nursuries here that have good prices on the tropical "annuals" (I wish they were not sold just as annuals!) but its hard to find good prices on the hardy subtropicals! Thanks Ben! Glad that you like the butia! I really like the variegated Alphinas, I see them all the time in Florida and in California and they are really beautiful plants. I wish I can find the variegated ones here, but Im happy that I at least found the green variety since those aren't usually found here either! The Monstera vine is going to be a potted plant for me. I wish it could grow outdoors, but its way too tropical (Tree Philodendrons might make it with protection though, I always wanted to try them in the ground, but they do well in pots so I guess its easy enough to bring them in). Monsteras are one of my favorite plants also and mine is just starting to get those nice spilt leaves so Im hoping that it will have lots of adult leaves by the end of summer! Your lucky to be able to grow philodendrons in your area, they are a great family of plants! I fogot the name of the tulips I bought, but I think they are early or mid spring bloomers. I used to not really be crazy about spring blooming plants but like you said, it takes such a long time for the tropical plants to start looking nice so the spring bulbs at least give me something to look forward to (and I dont have to give them any care which is another big plus!). I'm glad I could spread some winter cheer. I looked at my camellias the other day and wondered how depressed I would get if I had no flowers to look at during the dark season. The pink flower is a viburnum ('Dawn') that blooms from autumn through winter into spring. It shuts down during periods of heavy frost but bounces back right afterwards. (The winter cherrries and winter jasmine are also blooming right now; the hellebores are about to start putting out flowers. But only the viburnum is delightfully fragrant.)

Jeanne, that is a beautiful set of dishes and I can see why you love them so much. Your table is so pretty and the snowmen are just perfect with your dishes. I like how you added the pinecone candles. Just a lovely table!

Such a pretty table! The dishes and goblets are so delicate yet not fussy. I like the centerpiece you put together. That tall snowman looks like he standing over the fire to get warm! Your photos have such a nice light to them.

Jeanne, love this table setting. Your dishes are wonderful and that little bear coming around the bowl is darling. The s & p shakers look like they are pearlized. Stems are so pretty too.

Your snowman cp is perfect for this setting and like Pat said, "That tall snowman looks like he standing over the fire to get warm"! I reaaly like your napkin rings!

I'm always impressed with your warm and inviting tables and pictures.

This setting is absolutely beautiful, and those dishes are TDF. No wonder you love them. Just the polar bear and bowl would steal my heart!

Please, please, do not get me started on wanting some of these. I can't buy dishes. Can NOT buy dishes.

This may be one of my favorite tables you've done, I love
every single thing. The Snowmen centerpiece is wonderful.

I had fun doing this table (well, EXCEPT for ironing the t'cloth & napkins! tee hee)!

OA & PMoon...yup, I've learned to go ahead & burn the candles...I've been known to burn candles at both ends (when I had more energy!) ... so I just usually buy "bargain" candles!...that way I don't mind.

punk...yes, those individual place setting S&P shakers are kind of "pearlized" ... kind of like "giving them a sparkling iridescent shine in the moonlight" like the Pfaltzgraff box said about the dinnerware.

I did use these snowman last yr in March to show you all these dishes before I put them away...was fun this yr to try diff ideas after being on this forum for a little over a yr now. Here's a pic from before:

I'm late getting to this post Jeanne. Don't know how I missed it before--sure would have been my loss if I had missed it. I too love your dishes, such a soft wintery feel to them and the polar bears in the bowl and peeking around the bowl are too cute. I like the tablecloth you found with those snowflakes on it--goes perfectly for this table. My favorite thing has to be the snowmen centerpiece. I like how you used the berries and pine cone candles with them. Love it all! Luvs

I'm late too. Those dishes just scream Jeanne. And of course you listened and put them to good use. The little polar bears are precious, you need my polar bear planter. I never see any pretty pottery around here, snowman or otherwise, so I really enjoy seeing yours.

That big bowl sits on top of my fridge during holiday season & winter...I like to use it as a "punch bowl" for family Christmas:

When Pfaltzgraff starts discontinuing their patterns (which seems often to my dismay!)...the serving pcs go on sale...I think I found the bowl at a Tues Morn or maybe TJMaxx store in another town some yrs back...never had pd full price for any of dinnerware & serving pcs...but I now made up for it adding the NIB 4-place setting...hard to find "cheap" prices anymore! LOL!

I did get "stung" last yr on Goodwill.com...bid on 8 bowls & when got them the inside finish was all scratched, worn & some crackled! UGH! They will be a mosaic project one day!LOL! TF-commenting! Jeanne S.

Jeanne..sorry I'm late to respond here..it's been a hectic day, but I must say when I looked at your tablesetting..it gave me such a peaceful feeling. I was prepared (by the title) to get the feeling of 'brrr', but was pleasently surprised. This is all 'warm glow' and just lovely.
The pattern of your dishes and glassware is so delicate and so pretty. The mirrored stars, the cute snowmen and the adorable polar bear are all perfect accents.
The picture by candle glow is of 'magazine quality'!
You're very talented and I love it all.

Sorry, I thought I had posted on this beautiful table, but I guess I just had good intentions, : (
Everything is so lovely and it doesn't give off a Brrr vibe at all.
Last March's table was wonderful also, but this one is even more beautiful.
I have trouble making myself burn unique candles, but those pinecones sure look wonderful as they warm up your snowmen.
You did a lovely job putting it all together and it really shows. Kudos to you.

jaybird...all 3 snowmen were bought diff yrs at diff places...I think I got the bigger chubby snowman at a "Ben Franklin" store (a dime store variety used to be called)...both the chubby snowman had "Made in China" little gold stickers on the bottom.

The tall slender snowman with the cool top hat has no markings...he also has a couple brownish pine tree branches & pinecones at the bottom front of him. I don't remember where I got him...am guessing about 10 yrs. ago...sorry, not much help. Just keep ckg TS's, GW's, & specialty shops, etc. & one may pop up for you!
