With Valentines Day not so far away...thoughts turn to "Love"..............

How did you meet your current "love" and How many Valentines Days have you spent with him?

I was 16 and walking with friends, he was 19 and driving round lost with a mate, we got chatting and I took a cassette out of his car so he'd have to see me again if he wanted it back. We've been together 18 years and he actually proposed to me on Valentines Day so it's sorta special to us both. Sue :)

My DS hooked me up with my DH when I was in a "men are pigs" phase. He was supposed to be just some cute guy who had a boat- nothing serious. We fell for each other like a ton of bricks but fought it all the way. I even left the country for a month and he nearly came after me. I have spent 15 Valentines Days with him and we've been married 10 1/2 years.

There are lots of nice things about the house! So these are just some observations... Where is the back door? Is it into the family room? Just want to make sure you have a good path for kids playing in the yard to come in and use the restroom (and hopefully not tromp across a nice carpet.) Might not seem like much now, but I've been through this when DS had 14 middle school boys playing football in the back yard. I was glad they had a short walk, on tile, to get to the bathroom. Likewise for you if you're working in the yard and you come inside with dirty hands, muddy shoes etc. The master WIC takes up lots of exterior wall space, so it takes away from having windows on that side. You might want to reconfigure it to be more of an interior space between the MB and the Mbath. If you stay with a 2 story great room, be sure to ask the builder about air returns and/or a heated floor, so that all your heat doesn't stay up at the ceiling. (Do a search here and on the kitchens forum for some threads on this topic.) Keep in mind what others said about them being noisy. Also, whoever is in that left side bedroom on the 2nd floor will have to walk past an opening, visible to anyone in the great room, to get to the bathroom. My teenage DD would certainly rebel. And I'd want to use that 350 square feet for usuable space on the 2nd floor. Be sure to post your plans, with dimensions and aisle sizes, on the kitchens forum too; they can help get a beautiful and functional layout. For example, right now if a kid at the breakfast table wants more milk, they walk through a work zone past the stove to get to the refrigerator. And someone at the sink will be butt to butt with someone at the stove, depending on the aisle size. It's a nice sized space so I think you can get a more functional layout. Have fun!

How about a classic marble tile backsplash? It might offer enough visual interest for hubby, and it could provide more warmth for you. Plus, marble and soapstone are beautiful together. You could use a classic grey/white marble like Carrara, but you might enjoy the warmth imparted by Calacatta Gold. For shapes, I really love the slab look but that would be expensive, and could detract from the counter. The classic subway would be a great option, as would be a marble mosaic. It's great that the tile fell off since you want to make a change, but getting the tile to remain on the wall isn't rocket science, even when the tile is obviously heavy like yours is. Good luck!

Rebecca - here are a some more example of creative ideas that reduce the number of doors you need to deal with. Some time a fail is an opportunity to get creative. After all, one can't experiment with new cabinets, but you have nothing to lose with old ones:) There is an extra discipline needed if you take on any of the open shelving ideas. It is best to use the bottom shelf mainly for everyday items and put less used items or even just kitchen decor on upper shelves - then only the bottom shelf needs to kept obsessively clean. Since open cabinets need to be neat, they hold less stuff - you might be forced to seriously declutter - donate extras and store rarely used items elsewhere. I don't have open shelving - just a plate rail, but my kitchen is smaller and I actually find it very freeing not to have cabinets with lots of stuff in them. This will take two post to get all the pics in: This metal for the insert is sold at home center stores - I think it is used to make radiator covers. Remove a cabinet and replace with shelves. Back with beadboard or you might be able to use the textured, paintable beadboard wallpaper. I used that in my basement kitchenette. Frosted or beaded glass:

"I love my dog enough to not lock her in a cage..." I guess I hate my corgi then, who's on crate-rest for two weeks while she takes medication for her back pain, after I spent $600 dollars on x-rays and pills. She goes outside to use the bathroom, then goes right back into her crate. On the days the housekeeper comes and the dogs go in my office to keep everyone safe and out of the way, she gets carried up and down the stairs so she doesn't strain her back. What a horrible life she lives. I can't tell, though, because she goes happily back into her crate after her bathroom trips and lies down in her soft bed. Normally if she had an opinion she'd tell me, but she must be a masochist and not realize how abused she is. This weekend she goes back for a follow up with her regular vet, and then we're going to see a specialist to talk about laser treatment, that poor unloved creature. As to the crate in the kitchen, I don't have too much trouble keeping our dogs out of the way when cooking. Our little rescue Chihuahua/mutt happily sits on the couch and waits for us to be done messing around with things that don't involve cuddling him. When she isn't on crate-rest, the corgi sits under the table hoping one day we'll spill a casserole on the floor and tell her to help herself. The lone wolf is the Papillon-mix who has to be reminded to get out of the kitchen. He's somehow convinced himself the only way "out" is a complete loop of the island, even if he's already two feet from the "out" area if he'd just turn around. We've agreed on a safety zone where he's not underfoot but also able to keep an eye on me just to make sure I don't need him for something. I tried putting up a baby gate once but he just stuck his little nose through the openings and stared at me plaintively while whisper-crying. And yes, with a corgi in the house, I can confirm: dog hair is a spice and a fashion accessory.

My DH was in a truck that got hit by a train. I was in the crowd and later in the afternoon, my friends dared me to call the hospital to see how he was. The rest is history. That was December, 1957. It was such an unusual way of meeting, we figured it was really meant to be!

I was working in a Waldenbooks in the mall at christmas time, and my DH braved the mall parking lot as many times a day as he could to come and take a peek at the little red haired girl working behind the counter. Apparently, he had struck up 2 conversations with me at different times, before I recognized him the 3rd time! LOL! We went out on one date, were "exclusive" after that (the late 80s term for going steady), got married in 1991. This ValDay will be #14 together, and we got engaged just a few days before V'day. He still taunts me, because when he asked me to marry him, I never answered. I was SCARED TO DEATH. I guess 10+ years and 3.5 babies must be answer enough.

My DH and I met when we were attending the same trade school (1965-1966). I was taking courses and I also worked in the school cafeteria to be able to get lunch. One of my duties was to make sandwiches for "a student" who worked after school in a city a distance away from the school. He worked late at night and did not have time to go home to get supper so the trade school furnished his sandwiches. One day when he came by to pick up his sandwiches, he asked my name and address.....we dated a year and were married in Nov. 1967. We are still in love.

I guess since I ask the question , it would only be fair to tell how I met mine.

My husband Denny and I were introduced by mutual friends that were married. They are long since "split" but he is still our best friend.
It was a blind date on a Sunday afternoon "bowling" date.
He took me home early because he had another date that afternoon. ??bowling?? and ??another date?? hum....not off to a good start. But that was Nov. 28 1965. Engaged Jan.1966 and Married May 28, 1966 - six months to the day of meeting. It worked for us but I would never jump into anything so quickly again.
This May will be 36 years for us.

Since we are talking about our loves I just had to tell you all this,
I was coming out from getting my shower tonight and my DH was on the phone talking to my sister.She has alot going on in her life right now and I heard him say that he went through alot of dating the wrong people and even some that he didn't even know why he went out with them but he said that he was so lucky to have found me.I started to cry.I thought that was so sweet.That was the best Valentines gift he could ever give me.

My DH had lost his dear fiance' & I hadn't been in anything serious for 9 years. Mutual friends set us up on a blind date; just hanging out with other people. We all went to a social dinner, then to a bowling alley to play pool, & then everybody went home. DH & I decided to take a walk on the beach; (we both lived in Ft. Lauderdale at the time). We walked & talked for hours. We realized it was 4am. He drove me home and get this, he ASKED me if he could kiss me goodnight! I knew then I loved him. We have spent 5 Valentines together & in March, we will be married 5 yrs. Since then, we have been in the process of adopting our 4 year old grandaughter & we have a 2 year old son (suprise!) I am 45 & also have a 21 yr. old & a 26 yr. old! It's been a rough haul, but we wouldn't change a thing! It's a God Deal!

Met mine in while the both of us were serving in the United States Navy. It was basically love at first site for the both of us. That was in October of 1974. This Valentine's Day will be our 27th together. We have been married 25 years and have a 24 year old son who is in the United States Marines.

I met my DH the "old fashioned way" through a newspaper ad! No kidding! I had a friend from work over for dinner one night, and she was calling all of these guys in the "Shopper Stopper" to see what was going on. She dared me to call someone, too. I just swooped my hand over the paper, landed on one, and then called him to hear his recorded ad. I made her listen, too, because he sounded too good to be true. When she listened, she said: "You know this guy! You order computer parts from him all the time!" I never would've though that one of my "vendors" would later become my husband, lol! We dated for 3 years, and have been married for 7, this coming April. Ladies...trust in fate!
