Between seasons...

What if you don't decorate for Valentine's Day, Easter, St. Paddy's, etc., but want one of Judith's gorgeous stacking plates on your DR/kitchen table, or buffet(or anywhere!). Since this is *my* case, I would like a stacking plate that is more 'transitional', for lack of a better word. Something that can carry me into the spring/summer, because *then* I know I can use flowers, and other goodies that relate to the warm-weather seasons.

But what about NOW? What would work? What could take the place of the Christmas ornaments? I don't think Judith used them in her fall stacking plate, just the beaded fruit. I'm at a complete loss, and i'm craving more than the silk plant/2 candlesticks that were there before Christmas since seeing the stacking plates.

Since I have a LOT of glassware items, I will create my own 'stacking plate' to begin with. If I 'see' I can do it, will go out and buy the real deal.

Not only am I craving one, i'm itching to do one? LOL ;o)

I never really decorated for Valentines Day or Easter but I figured a 'Stacking plate' display as the diningroom centerpiece for those holidays would work for me. For the Valentines one I used only 6 Christmas balls (silver/red glittery ones), white doves I had left from a bridal shower, red berries which I had from Christmas, red hearts (I picked those up for a couple of dollars at michales and I had some acrylic crystals and white silk roses. I will not do St. Patricks Day. But I already have some ideas for Easter. Now to your question... maybe you could use some of those balls that they have at target and pier one...you know the ones that are out of twigs, or painted in animal prints or in different metallics and add some dried plant, grass twig like things. I guess that would be a bit more contemporary.
Or use different silk florals, berries and birds I think that might work...At some point I'd like to try a 'rustic' looking one with twig birdhouses, pinecones, little birds and some berries. How about using some of the artificial fruit as the starting point...not the sugared one but plain...lemons...pears...or green apples and add things from there. I think the possibilities are endless. Judith's stacking plates have lots of sparkle but maybe one without sparkle could still be beautiful...

patty_cakes, What about some greenery like ivy, some nice grape clusters, and beaded fruit like you mentioned? A fancy little birdhouse? Tiny cup and saucer set?
What accessories do you have in your kitchen year round? Is there anything you could use on the stacking plates to stay in keeping with your decor?
Let us know what you're thinking. This is a good idea for all of us.

There are better places to buy Hostas that are cheaper than PD. But, I usually buy mine locally. I just HAD to have H. Titanic this year, and paid a pretty penny for it. But, it was still less than the price for PD's hosta. You'll find great internet sites if you look on the Hosta forum here. Now, for you, Otis, my man! I think it would be okay to cut back the daylily foliage with your weedeater. And, I don't think L. Frank Baum ever had a thing to do with hostas. LOL. Are you growing them in shade? What kind of soil? None of the hostas are looking really good right now as we head into the heat. I have 'Sum and Substance' (really big--about 6' feet wide and 3' tall); 'Blue Angel' (bout the same size); Gold Standard, Night Before Christmas, Francis Williams, Remember Me, Honey Bells (fragrant blooms), lancifolia, Titanic, Sun Power, albo-marginata, and a few others I don't recall. My collection is not that big. I have a few asiatics, 'Oklahoma City' (orange with lighter orange center), a real big neon orange one, muscadet, and a mixed bag of whites and pinks). I really love the orientals (bloom later than asiatics), and have several of these. Also have L. formosanum, which blooms big white trumpets in the fall. Otis, you're gonna love gardening - that's your mantra for the remaining summer days. You plant the asiatics, orientals, orienpets, and other lilies in the fall. The big box stores will carry them pretty cheap, like Home Depot, where you can get several in a bag for $3-5. I really popular asiatic that is pretty is "Lollipop". Its pink and white. I'm sure they will stock that one. Maryl, as you can see, I really like the BIG hostas. I have so much yard to cover. Most of mine, I bought at Warren's before they became O'Higgins. You can get pretty decent hostas at decent prices at Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and Lowe's. Oh, by the way, Otis, I love Ellen Degeneres. I think she's hysterical! Susan

Scabiosa, calylophus, purple skullcap, perennial geranium aka Cranesbill, Texas Mock Orange, four nerve daisy, marcus salvia, salvia greggii, nearly wild rose have been blooming for 1-3 weeks and should continue thru at least part of the summer, off and on. Phlox pilosa, California poppies, larkspur and Stella daylilies are about to pop now. For later I have flame acanthus, pavonia, russian sage, creme broulee coreopsis, black and blue salvia, rain liles, and oxblood lilies. I have something blooming from March till frost and later with this mixture.

I've been adjusting the length of time for the seasons. In winter I ran the lights (mostly 150 watt 5000k LEDs) for my plants for about 10 hours, and now they're getting 12 or 14 hours, depending on how much the light annoys me in the evening. My collection ranges from one to five feet tall. The best solution I found is attaching clamp-on work lights to the pole of a defunct torchier, which allows me to put each light at any height up to about six feet. The problem is that I ended up with all the plants clustered around the pole, which wasn't very attractive. I still use the pole for two very low plants and clamp the rest of the fixtures to the edge of a shelf that runs between two of my windows, and arrange the plants the floor, window sills, a very low table, and a somewhat high table, rotating them between the artificial light and the windows when I get more direct light in the summer. The cords look ugly, but fortunately I'm not too picky about aesthetics. I could find or make another pole or two, but I'd really like to try getting a bunch of architect-style swing arm lamps and mounting their bases on 2 by 2's screwed to a shelf I have between two windows and vertically on the front of the window frames. I think that would give me a lot of flexibility, but I keep balking at the cost.

High humidity inside Florida house

We had no issues with indoor humidity during the hottest months of the season (RH inside maintained at 45%) but now as we are “in between” seasons in Florida - where outdoor temps are 60-80 degrees, our indoor humidity can be 60-65%. This is a common problem for areas in which there is higher humidity. Humidity is independant of temperature. So this isn't anything unusual for a high humid type climate. You can run your AC at a lower setting when it's not as hot. Most run of the mill AC's are not recommended to run below 55F outside temp as damage will likely result with out the addition of controls to operate as such. The trade off is that you will need to adjust to a cooler inside temperature than what you are accustomed to during the summer months. As the machines run based on temperature not humidity. Some HVAC systems that have humidity set points are limited in a tight band off the temperature setting. So you still have to adjust temperature setpoints for such systems. Short cycling: when it's cooler out the AC system (most of them) are designed to lower temp. They are either on or off. So due to this there is little dehumidification from them unless you force them to run by dropping indoor temps further to force that additional run time. 2 speed AC's: you get some better dehumidification with these... but 1st speed is typically 70% of total capacity of the machine so in off season use they are still over-sized in terms of trying to dehumidify the home. Enter the Inverter AC or variable speed AC; The ability to run in 1% increments up and down some systems could have upwards of 50 different speed levels or more. These machines still run off temperature, some may have dehumidify functions built into them -- but as mentioned above dehumidify functions are often tied to a temperature band off temperature set points. The advantage to inverter AC is better dehumidification due to the nature of how it runs. Also it will pay for itself over time because you're only ever using the amount of cooling you need in 1% increments up and down. (some manufacturer's units may not perform as mentioned here due to configuration, design, etc) Add a dehumidifier; sure this is one option but costs will go up. The cost to operate it, the cost to maintain it, the cost to repair it and eventually replace it... it's another system to maintain. Running a dehumidifier alone blows warm dehumidified air. Some people who are more heat sensitive than others won't like this mode of operation in that you're burning energy to dehumidify then need to burn more to run AC to drop the temperature. Some areas of the country a stand alone dehumidifier is the better choice but it's a very small market in my opinion. If you like it warmer inside with less humidity then this choice might be the better one. Me personally I like it a bit chilly. I ran my Bosch Inverter last night... seeing record temps here in Katy, Texas with highs in the 80's. Humidity is always a problem here short of a few weeks here and there.

Sandi, I had to take another peek at Judith's fall arrangement and you're right. Saw some glass ornament pimecones, acorns, and birds. It's soooooooo beautiful!

Tam, that's a great idea, but I still want to get some glitz!LOL I may have a start~I was at Sears the other day where much of the home decor was 50% off, and bought 4 mosiac glass balls~I wanted 5. They're amber colored, but take on a teal and red look also, which goes with the red walls in the DR. Maybe some gold/bronze leaves and berries, which I alredy have! I just bought a couple of birds that have a bronze glittery breast. I need the sparkle!! Thanks for the ideas!! ;o)

Patty_cakes, Your idea sounds really good--hope you'll post pics for us when you get it finished.

I don't think you can "do the wrong thing" with the stacked plates. Just different decorations will give a different look. Tamgypsy and Sandi had some good ideas too.

I know what you mean about needing some "sparkle" after the holidays are over--sort of leaves things looking blah when the Christmas decs are all taken down and put away.
