Staircase design... Newel posts

We are designing our staircase from 1st to 2nd floor. There are a couple of steps that lead to a landing, then a right turn that leads up 11 steps, then another right turn that leads up an additional 3 steps to the 2nd floor. There would be a number of newel posts connected by balusters and handrail, something like the attached photo. For those of you that have this type of design.... my question is are all the newel posts of the same design? Or is the 1st new post at the bottom of stair more "ornate" than the others... or bigger, more prominent in design than the others.... or are all the posts the same?

We have a similar design, and are going with the box newels. We had the choice of a large box newel at the top and bottom with a medium box newel at the landing, or medium throughout. We ended up going with the same medium size throughout. They were still a nice size and we thought the uniformity would look nice. Our stairs are open all the way from the basement to the 2d floor; so, we have a lot going on. Good luck!

Newel posts are attached to framing. They typically go through the floor and attach to the side of a joist or use blocking fastened between two joists. Fastening them to flooring of any type (or even a stair carriage) rarely results in a tight long term installation.

What you're looking at in the picture at the bottom of the stairs looks more to be a 6" newel and above that is a 3" newel. I did a 6" newel at the bottom and a 4.25" newel to run into it.

We've been in the stair runner business for about 22 years. We've found that newel posts, particularly in a very old home may be so wide in relation to the staircase that they complicate the placement of the stair runner. That is, centering it - in a case like that, we often just hug the post with the runner allowing it to be centered on the remaining stairs. In some cases we have cut the runner material around the post - had we not the runner would be completely off-center on the remaining stairs. StairRunnerStore

no. if you prefer, use a shellac. but I'd prefer the gray primer only because your black paint will go on better and have better adhesion. (you can tint the primer to any color. just have them add some black to it) Or, use the spray primer. it's a lot easier but you will have to tape off everything w/plastic and wear a mask. Always remember after any primer or shellac, you must fine sand w/a 220 or 320 sandpaper. then take a damp rag and wipe everything down very well. use an air hose to blow off any corners if you have to. Now you can paint.
