Anyone have an induction cooktop on narrow island?

We are in the process of installing granite in our 80's kitchen and replacing the existing Jenn Air electric coil cooktop that is located on the island. I'm not a serious cook, but would like to go with an induction cooktop for safety reasons. Unfortunately, my island is only 25.5 inches wide. I'm concerned that the cooktop + pop up vent will not fit. Does anyone have an induction cooktop on an island this narrow?

I know it must have worked for you since you are replacing a cooktop; but I personally would not want any cooktop on an island that narrow. Especially if the pathway in the back of the cooktop is frequently used. Could you consider an island hood?

We are replacing our old JennAir range ( not sure if they are the same size) with Wolf modules in our island. The cooktop and downdraft require a minimum of 25 1/8 inches of flat counter space from front to back.
Check the specs for your new unit online. I love having the cooktop facing out so I can talk while cooking.

Well, the problem was not a relay, but a solder join that melted. Yes, the oven relay pole became unsoldered. A bit of solder and back to normal. This brings me back to a final comment. The technology is wonderful!. The stove is brilliant and safe. All homes in hot climates should consider this appliance. But, the board quality and manufacturing quality are where the problems stem from. The use of mechanical relays instead of solid-state switches, single layer boards for high current traces, not bending lead to increase solder area in high current spots. All these areas can easily be fixed and produce a superior, long-lasting product. This is why LG and Samsung have come into the appliance market and swept it. The USA manufacturers are too use to a monopoly and only care to produce a product that lasts the warranty period (was sure my case). Would I recommend it... yes. It is unique. What other stove can boil water in minutes, faster than any non-commercial gas stove, and at the same time place one's hand right next to the pot and be only warm. The stovetop always looks brand new, as it does not get that hot (no burnt-in oils). Also, the temperature range control can deal with chocolate and confectionery. Can you tell I do the cooking at home :o)

I am comparing the Jenn-Air to the Bosch 800 series (new model). They are fairly similar in pricing, with slightly different feature sets and controls. Jenn-Air offers an auto boil function that monitors a pot of water so that it does not boil over and remains boiling. Bosch offers timers that actually shut down the element when the timer ends. There's also an "autochef" function that has pre-programmed frying settings. My local appliance store sells both and likes both. The Bosch features are probably a little cooler, but my impression is that they are both good choices. I've done a lot of research, and there are people who will always hate Jenn-Air (understandably), but Whirlpool has invested a lot of money in making the company a flagship brand for them. I may go Bosch just because the new Bosch ovens fit my needs better than any other brand in my price range, and buying both will make my overall cost less, but I'm still considering both. I would encourage looking at live models, if you can. Controls can be a huge personal preference you aren't aware of. I quite like the Jenn-Air slider control, but you may not.

Jim, I like the touch controls. They aren't as smooth as the videos indicate, but they do operate well. They took a little getting used to after using knobs on a 22 year old electric smooth top (not quite as old as yours, but still old in the appliance world!). I don't have the wireless probe so I don't have any feedback on it. If I recall, it only works on one of the burners so I decided to forgo it for the time being. I may add it later. If you get it, please let me know what you think.

At that price, you should be able to buy the lower priced 36-inch Frigidaire (made by Electrolux) along with a 5-year warranty from an appliance store. There should be a counterpart Kenmore available from Sears in that price range, but last time I looked Sears had neglected to provide any data about it on the Internet. Most induction cooktops in this size are more expensive, as far as I know -- certainly the European sourced models. I have never researched 30-inch models for pricing. Most 36-inch models are five hob; 30-inch models are four hob. Two hob models I know little about other than units from Cooktek, which are somewhat more industrial. We did consider an island hood, but the existing wiring and studs (two story house) would present major problems. Since the island is already set up for downdraft, that makes the most economical sense. I do agree, though, that it is a terrible design. I will definitely check out the Wolf. I can extend the granite top slightly which might help as long as the hardware all fits in the cabinet.

We live close to the Gulf Coast, so most of our cooking is done practically year 'round on a grill with fresh veggies or salads for sides. I can't even remember the last time I fried anything or even uncovered the other two burners on my cooktop which probably explains why this hasn't been a problem. But still, I'm reluctant to no longer have the burner covers that visually indicate that the stove isn't hot. As much as I despise cleaning drip pans, maybe I should stick to electric coils. Yikes!

noelle65, if you find the right combo that will fit I have no doubt you will be pleased with the effectiveness of a telescope vent vs the Jenn Air. I went fro JA DD to Thermador telescope. I had an island range for years and loved it. Our new kit is to small thus the range is on exterior wall with a great hood BUT I miss not facing the action and now have my back to husband or visitors.

What about a single induction hob installed sideways. I believe Wolf has one as IIRC I saw it in a showroom and they also have a downdraft that fits behind it. If you install sideways then the downdraft would now be on the side as well

I know this is an old post but I had this same situation and this may still help someone. We built a 44" high pony wall behind the island. It's safer, hides some of the cooking mess from the family room and gave me room for two more electric outlets. One on each side of the cooktop.
