My Christmas 'Inheritance'...Pictures

This is bittersweet but I had to share. My MIL passed away last week. About 15 years ago she either bought at a craft show or a friend made for her, a quilted Santa. The material is made from a very old quilt. I BEGGED her to give it to me. lol. But she refused. I told her one day I was going to steal it from her when she wasn't looking. :) We both love old quilts.

Before we started clearing out her house yesterday I announced to everyone that "if you find a quilted Santa, it's MINE." They all laughed. High in the closet and wrapped in paper my dh found the Santa!

It's a lot bigger than in the picture, and stuffed very tightly. Perfect condition!

I'm leaving him out all year. He's just too precious to hide in the closet. :)

Below is another item I found. I'd never seen it before and no one else wanted it. This is also made from a very old quilt and hangs on the wall. It has old buttons on it. I may leave it out also.

It's the width of a hanger which I think is on the inside but it hangs from a ribbon.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

The santa and angel are both adorable. I'm so glad you ended up with these. It's funny what appeals to one doesn't interest others. I'm happy to hear that you will cherish both of these that was DMIL's.

The santa is so cute. Is his little boots made out of material? Love the jewelery added on the angel. This is a great way to display some of our DGM and DM's jewels and doilies. Do you care if I copy these and try making some?

Punk, feel free to copy them! The shoes on the Santa are made of a thin "leatherish" material.

I sure wish I knew who made the angel though and whose jewelry it is.

I made a mistake, she passed away two weeks ago.

This is the year of "no presents but lots of love", and not by my choice LOL. For 11 years, I've spent the entire year trying to figure out exactly what I should get Dave for Christmas, but he just DOESN'T care what he gets..a few books, maybe a puzzle or a crossword book..he's fine..yes, I am the saddest person ever, when my "I've aced it..I KNOW what to get him, only to find turntables for the comp, weather stations he mentioned a million times, the teak shower bench that he said he'd spend cold winter nights sat upon in our brand new slate and stone shower with power jets beating him into submission (only to find he only uses it to stand his shampoo bottle on!) gifts still in their boxes, partly assembled, or just given away. The past couple of years I've given in to his wishes/wants.. and he's been happy with the books he's shopped/bought himself. I'm not, as I love the shopping/surprising/amusing little tags on/thought of you gift giving, and yes selfishly, I wish he liked doing the same as well. When we bought this house with the woodstove, I mentioned that some of the wood that I was splitting and stacking in the woodshed needed a splitting wedge..lo and behold, come Christmas morning, I received a 5lb ice cold wedge of steel..wrapped in a paper bag, and no tag, no name.. yes, I did ask for it, and he's still as happy as a pig in.. whatever ;) lol at the surprised look on my face when that was my ONE gift for the year! Guess I fooled him with my acting skills..so well that the next year I got a Lodge cast iron griddlepan to cook his steaks in for the winter times! Yes, wrapped this time in real wrapping paper and the price tag on it so I'd know how much he appreciates me!!! This year, he asked in November for my list.. I know, gasp! He's cracked it, he's figured out I like to receive AND to give. I'd secretly had books shipped by his parents from England, and a couple of neat things to surprise him, but not over whelm him. On Saturday, December 22 DH Dave went out to the garage to bring in one of the last pieces of door trim we were doing as one of my begged for gifts, and he fell in the snow on a slick of ice. He broke the ball off the top of his humerus, dislocated his shoulder blade and broke his collar bone. After surgery to pin everything to gether, locate the shoulder blade and arm bone, he's home from the hospital now. With his sling and pain meds in place, he's mostly comfortable, but he won't be able to hold the massive hardover books he so wanted, he can't drink the lovely wines and beers he bought, or do the shopping on the list he asked me for in November. He will be able to start therapy in about 2 weeks, and with at least 6 weeks off work that we can ill afford, he has lots of time to think of gifts for next year! Guess I won't be asking for door trim or a splitting wedge! I do love him..honestly! LOL Sorry for the novel! Off to shovel the snow so I can bring in a couple of bins of firewood that I split, with a great wedge!

Earlier this week I went to the supermarket and bought all the chocolate goodies .... 3 boxes of chocolates, 5 boxes of scorched almonds, 3 bags of choc coins and one box of After Eight mints. I hid them in a big box (crockpot size) on a low shelf in the pantry ... bad move! DH came home Tues night and found gold foil from the bags of coins all over the floor! I put a heavy weight on top of the box and felt secure in the knowlegde that she couldn't possibly move the weight, lift the box lid and cause any more havoc ... wrong move! While we were at work yesterday she had herself another little party! DS got home first and text me to say there was scorched almonds, after dinner mints and a huge amount of confetti sized cardboard packaging all over the kitchen floor!!!! I don't think she's actually consumed alot of the chocolate (luckily!) but she's torn alot of the packaging - two of her favourite passtimes has always been shredding cardboard and dis-embowling soft toys! Now that box is up on the HIGHEST shelf in the pantry with what remains of the goodies! And I have to brave the supermarket again to replace what's gone .... GRRRR!

Anne, I lost my mother 18 years ago, so I've had many more years to become accustomed to life without her. We had brought her with us to the U.S. to visit my brother's family for the Christmas holidays. She was only 70, and died of a sudden massive stroke, while we chatted about dinner plans, a few days after Christmas. I know that the pain of losing a beloved mother is the same, whether we lose them suddenly, like me, or slowly, from ill health. Christmas was my mother's favourite time of year, so my happiest memories of her, are often of the Christmas seasons shared together. I have such vivid childhood memories of Christmas music playing in our house, decorating the shortbread cookies our mother had just baked, and all of us watching Christmas specials on T.V., as we strung popcorn to put on our tree. The first 5 years or so after my mother's passing, just saddened me because she wasn't with us anymore, to celebrate anything. But then I guess I realized that being sad would have made my mother sad, so I made a conscious effort to dwell less on missing her, and more on how blessed I'd been to have her for 46 years. I think you'll just naturally begin to feel a little less sad each year. Recent loss is like an aching wound, but time brings a respite to that, so that the pain lessens through the years, to become less intense. I'm wishing you some comfort at this time of year, through all the joyous memories that your mother left for you.

I am sorry for the loss of you MIL. She must have been very special to you. The Santa and Angel are precious I'm sure you will always treasure them.

Will do. Wish I had some of the old quilts here in the house and I would make one today. I saved the pictures with your name attached. Did you asked the others if anyone knew where she came up with her angel?

Punk, no one even remebered the angel so they have no idea. But I think I do. My MIL was very close to her mother, Dovie. My MIL was a fantastic embroiderer and one piece she did, she had some buttons put on that came from her mother's old clothes. I'm assuming this may be Dovie's jewelry.

Here's some pictures of my MIL's stitching. She traveled miles away once a month to go to her Guild meetings at 80 years old!

Now I own about 15 of her pieces of stitching. And that is just a small portion of her work.

Here is a 3-D sled she did, I have it hanging in my LR because it's too pretty to hide.

Oh my gosh! I think that some of the piece your mother-in-law did might be called crewel embroidery. Crewel embroidery was a sort of raised, 3-D embroidery. Did you ever hear it referred to as that? It's very beautiful. It looks like your mother-in-law was an expert. I imagine we can't really see how intricate and detailed it is.

You are lucky to have such beautiful pieces that have such beautiful memories.

My DGM embroidered alot. I need to go digging when it gets nice and see if I can find any of her things she made. Seems like I remember a pillow that was done on black fabric.hummmmm

Sounds like she was quite a special lady who did some
very beautiful needlework. They will be treasure for you always.
I'm happy that you'll be able to enjoy her Quilted Santa that you loved.
I think that Angel is so sweet too with her 'special' jewelry.

Yes, she was an expert and it is a form of Embroidery. One of her "guild" ladies told me that at the funeral.

We're happy that she did so many pieces over the years because now everyone in the family got quite a few of them, not counting the pictures she gave us at Christmas.

Now if you REALLY want to feel sorry for me, get this, my brother died 11 days before my MIL. :(

I got the news of him being in the final stages of COPD on New Years Day while I was cooking black-eyed peas. Can you believe that? I don't know what to think now. lol
