Master Bathroom Floorplan

So I just bought a home and I am working on re-designing the master bathroom and one of the master closets. I would love any input on floor plan ideas.

Here are the specifics:

The space(bath plus one master closet) is 13' by 11'7"

(we have another master closet that is 8' by 6')

here is the current layout:

ideally we would have:

-dual vanity 6' or longer (at very minimum 5.5')

-toilet in a compartment (or alcoved)

-tub -5.5' by 3' jet (we are both about 6' so we prefer a bigger tub - but this is the first place we would cut costs)

-shower 4 by 5 with bench (minimum 3' by 4')

-a good sized second master closet (walk in)

I have come up with a bunch of designs...but I keep getting stuck. Please give me your advice!

I keep getting torn on how small/large to make the closet!

So I forgot to mention some info that could be helpful:

on the new plan - the wall behind the tub and shower is an
exterior wall

there are no windows in the bathroom except for one skylight above the toilet (in the old plan) or tub/shower (in the new plan)

and it is a 105 year old victorian so we wont add any windows on that exterior wall & the rest of the walls are interior

the new plan is rotated 90 degrees clockwise - so the hallway in the original plan is actually located at the bottom of the jpg of the new plan now (sorry about that..)

Old plan - 1 square = 0.5 feet
new plan - has measuements on it, but 2 squares = 0.5 feet

I think overall you have a nice plan, but there are a few concerns. Will you have a drop-in tub with a nice surround? If so, you'll have to allow 4 to 6 inches all the way around for the surround which means you'll have to shrink the shower some.

That long closet may be tempting, but it's quite unattractive and closes in the room. If nothing else, make that outside corner a 45 degree corner. I personally would sacrifice more closet to gain a nice open feeling with a nice view as you enter.

Here are a few renderings with the space opened up much more. The curved tub surround is to allow for a regular door plus casing into the toilet area.

The size of your bathroom reminds me of a place I stayed in South Africa. Not very wide but very long and a very nice floorplan. I loved it and had to take photos so here it is. This first one is standing at the bathroom door. This pic is a step or two into the bathroom. The toilet is behind that little wall on the right. The sliding doors lead to an outdoor shower that has 4 walls but no roof. I'm not suggesting that you do that but your shower can be there. :) We were there in winter and it was pretty cold in that shower. This place was close to a town so the sliding doors were there for security reasons. If this bathroom were in the bush that shower would be much more creative. This one you can see the toilet and shower. Here is the opposite end of the bathroom. The wall behind the toilet in the left foreground, the door into the bathroom is next and last but not least is the free standing tub. I don't know the dimensions of this bathroom and the wide angle lens shows it a little out of proportion but the tub tells you it can't be too wide because it's wall to wall. Hope this helps!

Well, to add a bathroom, you have to subtract space from somewhere else or make the house bigger. If your target for space reduction is the master bath, then what about pushing the laundry room straight up into where the shower is now? Re-orient the door and re-arrange the fixtures in the new, smaller space. The laundry room might have to shrink to accommodate a decent sized bath, but that could work. If you have to increase the footprint, you could do this by bumping the whole RH wall out even with the master suite bump-out. I would ask: how important is it for your parents to have a bathroom that opens from their room? If the other bedroom is going to be an office, and your daughter's room will be downstairs, is it likely that anyone else will be using the bathroom at the same time? Perhaps, if they live with you (or are you just talking visit?), the 3rd bedroom could be their den, with the chairs and TV, giving them a 2-room suite. Also, the linen closet in the bathroom could be eliminated to make the BR closet bigger.

Hubby and I are having disagreements about the master bath layout. My words won't convince him that what he is proposing just doesn't work for what I want. What I need are examples of real master bathroom plans. Measurements would be great, comments on how it works (or doesn't) for you would be awesome. Other than that, anyone know of a good,free online source for bathroom plans that include measurements? I'm finding lots of pretty pictures but no details. Thanks!

CPartist, my feeling is if there is a door on each side of the bed both going to the same place only one of them has to be 36", if the turn into the bathroom is negotiable. One of them could be 36" and one could be 24" for that matter as long as they are both going to the same place and it doesn't extend the length of the trip appreciably--because one of the openings is essentially redundant. And also, I don't know where this bedroom is. There is a set of switchback stairs out in the hallway. If this bedroom is on the main entry level for the house and the person doesn't need to navigate the stairs, sure. But if this bedroom is upstairs and there is no elevator, outside a chairlift and ability to transfer to a wheelchair at both ends, the point is essentially moot. I've been through the process of dealing with age (father), disease related (mother) and temporary accident related (sister) people having to function in walkers and wheelchairs in a house that was not very accessible, and my conclusion is that it all has to be put in context. Accessibility starts on the sidewalk or in the garage before you even get into the house and proceeds from there. So I agree wholeheartedly that the house should be as accessible as possible, but if you are going to start talking about wheelchair accessibility the entire house has to be considered in that same context.

I was concerned with whether I would be making things a litle too tight with the closet so large.

I really like the corner sink idea (I feel like you can always have more counterspace & I think the shower still has plenty of room with a surround on the tub.
What program did you use to make those? Those 3-d images give a much better feel for the room. I have more re-doing to do and I would the name of a good program.

I use Punch Pro, but I think most people really like Better Homes and Gardens program. I would have posted a floorplan, but I have to print it, rescan it back into the computer, then upload it to Photobucket. With the 3D, I can save it as a JPEG right away. If you give me the color scheme you are going for, I can change that for you.

I forgot to mention that you will be very happy with a 5.5 foot tub even though you are tall. You want to be able to have your feet touch the end of the tub so you won't slide down.
