white floor tile for white bathroom

With all popular earthy stone travertine tiles locally am having trouble finding tile for my white bathroom/ contemporary design, clean straight lines, greenish opaque glass doors on vanity, brushed nickel finishes, white painted walls/. Am looking for off white ceramic or porcelain 12x12 tile diagonal layout. Decided against all white tile as feel it will need extra maintenance to keep clean.

Was looking at Crossville Satin sheets and Powdered sugar but unable to bring clear large picture on my dispay. Anyone can describe? Any other tiles to look for?

I'll see if I can get the series name tomorrow for this tile from Dal, but the white tiles in this floor are stark matte white:

Oh, and don't let the date on the picture scare you-- they still make it. I just did another bathroom floor exactly like that today with the very same tile, so it's still available. :-)

Do not, repeat, do not do the powdered sugar in the bathroom. My new bathroom floor tile is Crossville Powdered Sugar. It has a matte finish, exactly what I thought I wanted. But it shows every drop of water, every foot print. Also, the tile sample doesn't accurately show the whole picture. I really thought it was just white. If you look closely, very closely, at a large tile, you'll notice a very slight yellow/umber-ish coloring in spots. Over a large floor area that becomes more apparent and coupled with the matte finish, it looks grimy. It's not because white shows dirt more. It's because of the finish and the true non-white color. Even the tile man called the store because he thought it was defective. Very disappointing after anguishing for so long over tile choices.

Holligator -- I am so glad to do you any kind of favor. Your kitchen with that beautiful soapstone was one of my first inspirations for using soapstone in my kitchen -- which we love above all things (if you look at the bathroom pics below you may be able to see the soapstone I snuck in there as well). And it's funny what you said about your husband liking black. Mine does too, as long as it's not shiny (which made soapstone perfect for us). So what goes around comes around on GW! I love that. Anyway, the floor definitely doesn't show dirt (even with a muddy-footed dog running around!). That's a bit hard to see in the pics (where the flash shows up every piece of lint) but in real life they just look good. We're very pleased (we had a great tile guy who was meticulous in laying and spacing the tiles, which were on a very loose mesh backing). It took some looking to find larger format hex tile. The tile we ended up with is American Universal in a matte black, 1.5-inch size. I really like the matte look (the penny tiles on Door 16 are matte black, from Nemo Tile in NY, with black grout) and I'm glad we went with the slightly larger tiles (the other choice was one-inch tiles, which were easily found at Daltile). The American Universal tiles were shipped from California (although the box says made in Japan) and had a lead time of a week or so; my impression is that they are fairly widely available (we got them from a local tile store). These photos aren't great (and the trim on the new pocket door is still not painted!) but maybe they'll give you an idea. The first is probably the best representation of the way the floor actually looks. From August 12, 2011 I think the flash in this one is making the grout look lighter than it reads in real life and the tile shinier. From August 12, 2011 Good luck with your powder room. White marble shower, white grout if bathroom floor has platinum?

Is the Platinum the Laticrete Platinum? If so what about Silver Shadow? It is a very soft gray that is almost white, but looks great with Platinum. Are you using cementitious grout or epoxy? I know many have used SS for their light or white tiles. Here is Silver Shadow epoxy on the bottom vertical grout spaces. The top area was grouted with a 50/50 ratio of Platinum and SS. The middle row was with Raven and SS. Note that there is a halo around the marble, like it is still wet. Epoxy can do that with marble, I just looked at my tile boards after over a month of drying and the halo is still slightly there with the darker grouts. But not as marked as in this picture. So that is something to consider. Here is the Silver Shadow epoxy with my bright white tiles. With these tiles the SS looks light gray, but with the tiles above it looks almost too white for my taste: I took Laticrete epoxy Platinum and mixed it with a little bit of Silver Shadow for an in between gray for my black slate floors. It is in a 3:1 ratio. The colors mixed very nicely. The grout sample on the left is the SS and the one on the right is the Platinum. It didn't take much SS to lighten it up significantly. If I did this over I would just have used Platinum. My DH really likes the combo. He thinks it ties in with the tub. It is relative isn't it, because it is not white at all but appears white. I will be having a marble listello, as seen above in the sample board, with my white tile wainscot. I might mask the marble off when I grout the white field tile with Silver Shadow. Then I would plan to come back and grout the marble with a reverse blend of Silver Shadow 3parts to Platinum 1 part. Nothing like trying to complicate things. That's one of the benefits with DIY. But if I was paying someone to grout, I would not consider these mixes.

try to look up chloe ..American Olean makes them. less expensive choice is dal-tile. You will find it on the home depot website. scroll all the way down and click to just for contractors and look up the tile. anybody can buy it at that price. I did a job for someone using the dal tile black and white floor. The wall was done with 3x6 bright white subway tiles from us ceramic at 14 cents a tile. also purchased at home depot.

Suzieque ~ I have a little more time this morning to answer your questions. The tile type is mosaic, it comes in sheets that are connected. The challenge is lining it up just right o that you cannot tell that they came connected in sheets (no 'seams'). Our sheets were mounted on mesh. Another type is connected by rubberish 'dots'. The mesh worked well for us to gently pry out the white tiles we wished to replace with black. However, I believe the tile with the dots is easier to lay properly because there is no chance that excess mesh at the edges will bump into the next sheet as you place them into the thinset. To eliminate this possibility, I spent some time trimming the excess mesh from the edges of my sheets. You can buy hexagon tile already in a couple of patterns from daltile. You can also buy octogan and dot tile fairly easily at most tile stores, where you can have a choice of various dot colors. Its not difficult to create your own pattern, but be ready to be very careful and meticulous in your planning. As I said, I trimmed every mesh sheet, laid them out dry-fit on the bathroom floor, laid the black flowers on top and figured out exactly where they would go marking with a pencil. Then removed each of the white 'flower' tiles and placed the black 'flower' (which I had cut out still connected with mesh holding the 'flower' together) They are not glued, until the whole sheet is placed into the thinset. Since our bathroom was narrow, I was able to make four piles of tile sheets (with the black flowers in place) which were in the order of which they would be laid with the furthest row by the window on top. The jagged edges around the room were covered up by wall base tiles, door trim, or the radiators. By the shower pan litle 1/2 tiles were put in place (these can be bought separately, but a good tile setter can cut these). Lastly, I bought our tile online from American Universal tile. It comes in several sizes and finishes and many colors. We chose 1" matte finish. Send for samples first in the various sizes and finishes. I chose Trikeenan's Modulus line of procelain tiles in Lily White for my floor and shower/tub surround. They are one of few porcelain tiles rated for the floor. I love their colors and classic simplicity. They come in various sizes - 8x8 and 9x12 the largest. They offer discounts on overstock and seconds and are very accomadating over the phone.

SHIRLEY you jest!! :-) Porcelain is just about the toughest flooring surface you can find, and there are very few that you CAN'T use on just about any floor you desire, INCLUDING the garage, or front walk!! :-)

First, I apologize for not making myself clear. There are many porcelain floor tiles but it was my experience that when I found a porcelain wall tile I liked it was not rated for the floor. Second, excuse me again, but don't call me Shirley.;-)

I used a very inexpensive matte white tile for my kids' bathroom floor. It may have been around $2/square foot, if I remember correctly. I can get the brand name if you're interested.

Thank you very much for responses. I would love to check out all leads possible. It is amazing how little of white floor tiles stores carry around.
I grew up in the house which had similar tile as on Bill's checkered floor and that house was 100+ years. Tile was in excellent shape and easy to maintain.
Annie, thank you for letting me know about Powdered Sugar tile. I was thinking about mixing it up with Satin Sheets. But my fixtures are all white with grey pigment so putting tiles with warm yellow undertones is not an option. I did found couple of stores that carry Crossville tile and am going there to check it out.
Annkathryn I love how nicely you placed tile with small accents. Works wonders and looks cute and charming. Is it easy to clean? I am somewhat worried that every speck will be showing on such tile.
I am sure this forum seen plenty of people agonizing over their tile/paint/ fixtures... fill the blank/ choices...
am feeling that floor tile is going to pull my design together ...so pressure is on...;)

lindalana, my floor is very easy to clean although it doesn't get a lot of use (2 teenage boys). A quick spin through with a dust mop is all it takes, once a week.

I have been pricing out the octagon/dot black white tile and it is going to be $10/Sq. Ft. which is more than I want to spend on my boy's bathroom. Is the Daltile Rainier tile cheaper?
