dumb question - paint first or tile first

If you are doing a tile wainscot, would it be better to paint the walls first or tile the walls first? The walls are being primed today but the tile setter can't be here til next week - I'm thinking maybe it would be worth it to paint the walls while there are a few down days and then there wouldn't be any issues cutting in against the chair rail. Touchups could be made if necessary of course. What normally happens though?

kgwlisa, I don't know what is "normal" but we painted first (maybe to not have to be concerned about paint on the tile walls or floors?) Then we tiled the floors and wall (up to chair rail height). The painter was here this week doing what little touch up there was. Happy (and relieved) to say that our master bathroom remodel is officially COMPLETE!

We're still in the "gutted" stage, but I'm planning on painting first, ceiling, crown molding, and upper half of the walls, before tiling the lower half of the walls and floor. Of course, if I decide I do not like the paint color after all - which happened in my kitchen, I'll be painting again after the tile is in.

If you were to tile first it would be a huge pain to mask all that tile baseboard. Plus you don't have to worry about paint spilling on the tile... We painted first and then tiled, of course we would have to touch up here and there, but it seems like it is a lot easier to paint first....

You can use Dirtex to clean your walls. Sanding with a power sander is fine, but you will find that it gets dusty doing it that way. I may use a pole sander for bulk sanding and then use my orbital sander on stubborn drips or areas that hand sanding just isn't cutting it. If you do power sand all the walls, then cleaning them is probably overkill. The sander is going to remove any contaminants that may affect adhesion of the new paint. Be sure to remove any sanding dust before painting.

The existing base cabinets will not be changed. A pantry cabinet will be removed and a new one installed in the same footprint but will open on the longer side rather than the front so accessibility is improved. The over fridge cabinets will be replaced with full depth cabinets and pull outs. A bank of new cabinets (Upper and lower with drawers) will be added opposite the fridge wall. flooring could extend under the new cabinets but I really do not need to replace any of the other cabinets. They are good quality and in good condition, but will be improved with pull outs/sliding shelves. No electrical needed for range hood, but I will note whether additional outlets are needed along existing cabinets and will have at least 2 added with the new cabinet run. i may do the master bathroom (raised vanity and toilet and replace sheet vinyl flooring with tile) before I move in, but the floor place is great! The guest bath and closets will be improved after I move in.

I finally decided to install glass subway tiles in my kitchen for backsplash. However my question is, should I install the range hood and floating shelves first before my glass tiles? Is it easy to drill holes on glass tiles after it's installed? Thank you.

I painted after the tile went in. Would have been much easier though, if I had done it before. Wouldn't have to worry about getting paint on anything. I'm a messy painter.

Paint first, and touch up later if necessary. You don't want to be painting any more than necessary around finished tile work.

Definitely paint first. Much less cutting in to do = way faster.
