Miele, Bosch vs Kitchenaid Dishwashers

So have narrowed down dishwasher choice to these three brands. Knowing that Miele and Bosch are highly regarded---how does it work out to not have the hard food disposer nor heated drying? Those who have used both please let me know what you think.

I had both heated drying and and the 'automatic food grinder' on my last dishwasher. I found the heated dry to be unnecessary so I had stopped using it, and the food disposer would oftentimes finely grind up the food and then throw it back all over everything in the dishwasher. I would never get another model with an automatic food disposer.

I have a Miele now with condensation drying and no food disposer. I couldn't be happier. It dries the dishes without fail (of course plastics take longer), and if I open the door for a while after it's done, the plastics dry more quickly. The Miele has an extremely easy way to clean any leftover food particles out, and it doesn't have to be done very often. The model I have alerts the user when it needs to be cleaned. I continue to be amazed every time I open the dishwasher when it's finished to find immaculate 'everything.' I never knew I could 'love' a dishwasher until I got the Miele! :)

Hard Food Disposer-- Miele and Bosch have a filter and almost all modern dishwasher detergent is enzyme based not phosphate based. All you do is scrape your plates and the enzyme takes care of most of the left over food. What is left is on the filter is worked on by the enzymes. Sometimes it dissolves over time but every once in a while you clean the filter. Every 3-12 months depending on how you well you scrape your dishes and how often you use your dishwasher.

I now have a Miele La Perla II and would never go back to American type dishwasher. When federal regulations allowed phosphates and unregulated amounts of energy and phosphate use American type dishwashers worked very well too. That is really no longer the case. They have to use tiny food disposer motors to meet energy star standards and use far less water to meet federal standards too.

We moved about 2 years ago and thus I have recent experience with both Bosch and Miele dishwashers. Our old house had a Bosch Dishwasher (800 series) that was about 5 years old when we moved. When we moved into our new house it had a Kitchen Aid dishwasher and we realized in the first couple weeks that it needed to be replaced because: 1. it didn't clean the dishes and 2. it was ridiculously noisy. So, we replaced it with a Miele. We were going to buy a Bosch, but we got a really good deal on a Miele. Both dishwashers do a very good job cleaning the dishes and are equally quiet (i.e., if I am standing next to either of them I can't tell that the are running). All in all they are very similar so I will just list the things I find are different between them. My wife likes a clean look, so both dishwashers had hidden controls. Bosch: Pros: I really liked the light it had that lit up the floor red to tell you it was on and green to tell you it was finished. This way I didn't accidentally open the door when it was running. Cons: The little plastic wheel that are used to slide the bottom tray in and out kept falling off and/or breaking. On a positive, for some reason we were given a lot of extra wheels when it was installed (either by the installer, the company that sold it, or the manufacturer) so it was no problem to replace/fix, which indicated to me that someone anticipated this would be an issue. Miele: Pros - seems like a sturdy construction and we've had no problems at all so far. - 3D cutlery tray. We almost didn't get the Miele because of this, but it turns out this thing is great and far superior to the old style basket holder. It speeds up loading and unloading cutlery and is a big positive. I, however, think the new Bosch's have something similar. Cons - it doesn't have the light that lights up the floor, thus it is not uncommon for me to open the dishwasher while it is running. - the dang beep when it is finished running annoys me. I preferred the Bosch's green light on the floor.

Sorry to hear about the KA issues. I was concerned as well when I got a KUDE70FVSS model in February 2010. The vent is located on the left side of the top edge of the door, next to the controls. It is not on the side of the door. KA's are deep and most will not fit flush under normal depth cabinets I hear. We have about a 1 1/4 inch granite countertop overhang which happens to be about the thickness of the door. So in our case we pushed the DW back until the door was lined up with the cabinet fronts but the door is completely underneath the granite countertop. It actually looks pretty good. (Our old WP was flush mounted with cabinet matching panels installed) We put the moisture strip supplied by KA on the bottom of the granite, for no good reason but figured why not. There is a small strip of cabinet under the granite that forms the top of the cabinet opening for the DW that is, of course, wood. If I put the moisture strip on it, it showed since the strip is a shiny material, so I left it off. I kept an eye on it for months to see what happened and I have never seen any moisture or noticed any steam coming from the vents at all, regardless of the time of day we run the DW. The wood under the granite and all around the DW looks fine and has never shown any sign of getting wet. Not sure what system they are using in this model but apparently it does not suffer from the same problems as the side vent models.

Drying issues with Euro DW: All three do not dry plastics nearly as well as American DWs. It does not matter how much drying agent you put in the DWs. If you think about it, the water that collects in the divets of dishes actually pools there and has no chance of draining out. For that you need a well designed rack so that it is tilted as much as possible to help drain the water. This is where well designed racks make a huge difference with drying issue! In this, Bosch is the worst. In my household, Bosch also fits the least amount of our dishes. The glad plastic el-cheapo containers have a large divet where it collects water when you turn it upside down. I have used all three Euro DWs. For me, Miele is the hands down best, then my old Asko, then Bosch for rack design. Ineteresting enough, Miele has not changed their rack layout in many years. Whereas, Bosch and Asko tend to change them every few years. To me, the newer middle cutlery tray Asko looks rather odd and looks as if you can't really fit large dishes in there. I have NOT used it, however. My old Asko actually had a heating element at the bottom and it dried plastics fine with the element BUT I had to make sure plastic was NOT at the bottom rack. We decided not to use the heating element to dry, which was an option on the Asko. So when you compare the drying of all three without using the heating element on the Asko, they are all about the same, IMHO... I am not sure if the newer Askos have heating elements at the bottom like my old one did. Any how, if you want all your plastics to dry in the DW, I would skip the Euro ones. On the other hand, your plastics will last much longer in the Euro DWs. When I left the Asko heating element on, I often found that a plastic had fallen down and melted... This was one of the reasons I decided not to use the heating element.

Just to add a data point, I will never buy KA again. Two years ago, KA actually bought back my top-of-the-line dw at full price because the board kept fritzing out and they couldn't replace it. So, because KA did the right thing, I bought another top-model KA (KDTM404) because I'm naive like that. After one year, the new model stopped cleaning dishes. It's out of mechanical warranty by this time and, not wanting to endure any more of KA's "customer service," I and my engineer dad embarked upon repairs. We narrowed the problem down to the pump assembly and purchased another (over $200) to replace it. Get the dw apart and, surprise, the assembly doesn't fit. It's identical to the old assembly, but something is off. I disassemble the old assembly and discover that the metal impeller in the old pump has shredded itself. So we frankensteined the old assembly to the pump from the new assembly and after a weekend's worth of labor the dw now works again, who knows for how long. None of this answers the question of why a pump in a year-old, very expensive dishwasher would spontaneously self-destruct. No, I do not place auto parts, road gravel, or shrapnel in the dw. It also doesn't answer why KA can't make parts correctly. So no more KA. Ever.

There really needs to be a tutorial on using google to search gardenweb. It seems like everyday there is a new thread that is a complete rehash of something already addressed.

I was able to turn up the following threads with a simple search. I am sure there are plenty more that can be found with a few minutes of searching.
