Pictures of the stand. Maybe an old candle stand?

Here are pictures of the old, metal stand I was describing. I tried to focus on the two "holes" in the top.

Maybe it's an old candle stand and there used to be a lid/plate attached to the top?

Any other ideas?

As you can see from the pictures, my dog is also very interested in knowing what it is.

Cute dog! It might be an old bottom to a lamp, with the wiring being fed through the holes down through the two wings. Turn it over and peer through the bottom, is it hollow? Are there threads in the holes we can see on the pic to accommodate a screw in support for a socket?

Maybe a tall ashtray, and the tray is missing? Candle stands went out of favor once people stopped using candles as their primary source of illumination (replaced whale oil and then kerosene).

Welcome Beecharmer2! This is such a fun forum with the nicest of people! If you look on the GardenJunk homepage, you'll see "FAQ" at the top of the page. It tells how to make some of the cool projects you see on the forum. There's one for marbles on bowling balls...same idea as pennies. I'll post the link below. I haven't grouted mine but I bet someone else will speak to that. This was my first bowling ball. So easy and FUN! When you do a bowling ball, have a container you can sit it in. I used an old heavy pan. The GEII is a silicone sealant. I found mine in the glue department at Lowe's. Have fun! Post a picture if you create a Bowling Ball masterpiece!!! That is cool ,,, I've been keeping an eye out for an old birdcage too and, so far, haven't found anything. I like the handle and that it sits up off the ground. And the price, well you can't beat that. Great find. My most creative plant stand (not actually a stand) is my latest attempt with my grandmother's plant (I'll post pictures later). My family calls it the "plant contraption". :) Enjoy your RHP ,,, he looks great.

I was surprised to find that HD has onyx tiles, but they are 12"x12", and that might not be the size you want. However, for about $21, you can buy a 7" diameter stone cutting blade (for your circular saw, if you have one), and cut it down to size yourself. I have done this myself with good results, but it requires two people, since one person has to supply water to the blade while cutting. Home Depot does not have the best prices for these blades - I bought mine at a local stone yard.

Old cactus won't stand up on its own

Honestly just leave it alone. Put it back where you had it and ignore it. I know you want to do everything for it, but cactus don't respond well with too much love. In a couple weeks give it a drink and that's it for awhile. It's about to be winter so these guys aren't actively growing during this time. No need to water once a week. If inside I wouldn't even water once a week during growing season. Most of my cactus go completely dry during the winter. So if this was mine I would give it one more drink in a couple weeks. Don't give it a huge drink. You said the roots are not great. Then after that keep dry till early spring. Goodluck:).

Ideefixe beat me to it. Ashtrays used to be very elaborate affairs, designed to sit at elbow height for easy flicking. The bases were really beautiful. I love the ones from the deco period that were made of agate and lit from within.

I too think it's an ashtray stand. I would attach a pretty piece of wood, and use it as table for a small lamp. (The curved design would make it difficult to wire for a lamp, and the height is off as well.)
