Better than Kerdi?

I stopped by a tile/flooring store on Saturday, and was talking to one of the salesmen. He was telling me about their installation services (which I really wasn't interested in, but talked to him about anyway), and I asked if they used Kerdi for tiled showers, or what they used in the alternative. He told me that in tiled showers, they use Hardibacker and then the installer rolls on something (with a paint roller) over the board that is a waterproof membrane. He compared it to what roofers use on roofs, and told me that it was better than Kerdi. Anybody know what he was talking about, and is it really better than Kerdi? I thought Kerdi was the best option??? I guess I'm confused because I've never heard of anything like this. Thanks.
