Wall ovens: KA or Bosch

I am getting 2 side by side wall ovens - 1 conv. or regular. MY fridge is GE with contoured handles so I have to match this...

Was set on the KA KEBS107SB and its non-convection partner. However, The Bosch has manual dials which I like better.

I was told at the store Bosch is having a lot of service probs...

Can anyone provide any feedback re: Bosch 500 series or the above mentioned KA.

I don't know if it's the 500 series, but my brother has a Bosch wall oven and he hates it because it blows air out the front of the oven with amazing force. His gas cooktop is across from the oven, in an island, and the blower literally blows out the gas flame on his cooktop. I'm not kidding about this. When he uses both the oven and cooktop he has to set up a tray on a cookbook stand to block the Bosch oven vent from blowing out the gas flame. Annoying.

tryhard, That is both hilarious and unbelievable. Your brother should have either the oven or the gas cooktop looked into - probably both. There is no way that oven fan could create so much pressure in the exhaust that it would be blowing out the cooktop flame across an aisle from it! I have a Bosch too - an older series no longer sold and - interestingly enough, i have the exact configuration: oven across from the cooktop. You can absolutely feel the exhaust if you're standing in front of the oven - and while I agree that isn't a gentle waft, it isn't a stiff wind either. But step back one foot and you don't feel the exhaust anymore. As for blowing out the gas flame on the cooktop - no way!

BTW, I am serious about having your brother have both the oven and the cooktop looked into. My gas cooktop would blow out when I opened a drawer of the cabinet it was installed in, and we had service called out on it. But that had nothing to do with the oven. LOL!

You may want to peruse the link if you haven't done much shopping for cooking appliances for a long time. The overall lack of performance you should be concerned with might surprise you. For occasional use, I think the Frigidaire or a GE in the $1000 range would work fine. No need to spend a ton or seek every feature. My 25-old GE, without convection, does most everything I need. (I am replacing it with Electrolux Wavetouch. It will get more than occasional use). Big question is whether it will look right near the Wolf.

We lucked out yesterday on a special-order-customer-returned-good-as-new-still-in-the-box Electrolux 30" wave touch wall oven originally priced at $1999...first marked down to $1799...then $1299...then $990...when we went yesterday it was $750!!! Woo hoo!!! Now designing the new kitchen around this oven and hoping that our store will soon have a 36" rangetop special-order-customer-returned-good-as-new-still-in-the-box as well! :-)

Thank to both for your responses. As for what I am gaining with the combo feature - currently we have a dual oven and an over the stove microwave that is also the fan. We are changing out the microwave for a hood - as we are upgrading to a rangetop and since we don't often (if ever) use both ovens we felt that a combo would be the best of both worlds - an oven - along with either a microwave alone above it or a micro/convection oven which would give us a second smaller oven if needed. Not many combo units out there GE, KA, Bosch, Miele (but not interested in a steam oven) and the Dacor - which is actually 2 separate pieces. I looked again at the combo units and it seems like the GE is a better product - although the KA looks nicer. Not sure we have made any progress on a decision yet....

try_hard, I believe you - like I said, my cooktop flame would blow out and have to reignite when I opened drawers in the cabinet it was housed in. & this wasn't some two-bit cooktop - it was a Wolf. The service tech found that the supply pressure to the cooktop was far far below its spec so we had to have the gas company out. It is better now but not perfect partly because the gas company was loathe to raise the supply pressure any. My point is that something is wrong somewhere and my suspicion is that it is likely in both your brother's oven AND the cooktop.

Just as an experiment, I replicated an experiment yesterday to test the Bosch exhaust. I lit a candle and held it in front of the operating oven. At about 1 foot away from the oven or less, the exhaust at one point blew the candle out. At 2 feet back from the oven face, no matter where I held the candle, the flame just flickered - madly, but it flickered. The flickering was about as much as induced by your breath if you (I) held the candle about 6 or 8 below you (me). At 3' and more back, the flickering was getting progressively less as I moved back. This was a candle burning a single wick, not a flammable pressurized gas. I'll try to take pictures for you - all batteries needed charging yesterday when I was composing my shots for you. Oh & btw, the cooktop works just fine at 5 feet across from the oven face.

BTW, jalk, my comments are not an endorsement of either oven you are looking at. I know nothing about the KAs and, because the Bosch ovens are entirely reformulated as of this years offerings, I know nothing of them either. I have a now almost year old oven that I really like; it was always low on the feature and cooking mode scale compared to the big boys but I loved its engineering and its interface so I am happy with it. I did want to comment about (a) the oven that blows cooktops out and (b) cooktops that get blown out in "normal operating environments".
