can new oven be left outside after delivery?

we are expecting delivery of our new oven next Monday-- but I'm not sure we have anywhere in the house to put it! It's a townhouse with no garage-- half the first floor is going to need to be totally cleared out for the kitchen renovation, so it is already going to be very tight sqeeze on the first floor. I'm thinking of just leaving it on our patio until installation is possible. Bad idea? We live in Washington DC so it get's below freezing, but not by much. I can't imagine an oven would be harmed by cold. It'll be all packaged up and we could throw an extra tarp on it to avoid getting any water on the oven.

The Gc wanted all the stuff ordered and available before work starts so that is why we have it now and not waiting until actually ready to install.

if this is a bad idea, we'll put up with it on our first floor-- it'll just make it that much more unavailable to us-- i.e. more likely that we'll have to eat out at restaurants with no room for a dining table.

I can't tell you for sure, but I think it's a bad idea to leave anything with electronics outside - you might be fine but why take the risk? Also, there's a possibility of theft unless your patio is enclosed. I'd figure out a way to squeeze it in somewhere. I had my appliances delivered and put in my living room until my GC was ready for them.

How about a climate controlled temporary storage place? I'd want the electronics kept warm & dry & no chance of theft.

If I remember right, Olya grows them outside in the Tampa area. Someone remembers me! :) I have not posted in forever and decided to check out the site today I DO grow outside, in Tampa (Temple Terrace), year round. In Florida, it is way too tempting to grow orchids inside,since, as Gary said, we have 10 months of good orchid weather I have a structure with 50% shade cloth on it - lots of light From Orchids May 2009 In winter I cover it with plastic - takes two people to do that ...On cold nights, I turn on a heater or two in there. Any temps above 45, I am not worried, not even for phals... With a few plants, growing outside in Florida is a way to go. Give your phals lots of bridge diffused light; the dendrobiums will need a lot more light than that...

lol I have a little room upstairs where I keep all my seed stuff. After I mailed out the last package last year, I just closed the door and did not go back in there to deal with the mess for weeks! Downstairs there are too many cats, and it takes only one to make a complete disaster of a seed box. This year I am going to take photos of the seed sorting and result mess! I had a similar situation. My sofa came with a chipped (small) back leg. I noticed it and the delivery guys had these "clay" thing that got molded into the chipped part, once there it would harden and "never" come off---according to them. So fine...I like you figured was willing to let it go at that. BUT ..when they turned the sofa over, the guys left a red-brown stain on the sofa arms--and then he tried to clean it with windex! While cleaning we noticed a seam rip on both arms. He advised to keep the sofa(apparently...this is the way it's done), take pictures and email to customer service. They would exchange the sofa. Well after he left, we did this and emailed. Turns out they (FLS) does not do that, but they would pick up the sofa, fix it and return it..no charge. Of course, now a whole summer has gone by and I am still waiting. I also noticed a rip in the cloth under one of our ottomans..which they said they would fix. (this was noticed ..after I signed the papers). My advice is to take good digital pictures....inform them of the dent and whatever else you are willing to overlook. REMIND them how much you have spent,return customer etc.... I would work directly with the head customer service person on this. Keep following up. AND mention the fact that you have heard that other furniture companies do not charge...so why should you have to pay. I am always amazed that we consumers spend so much money on fine furniture. (they follow us like hound dogs when we are shopping) and then when something comes damaged they don't even want to acknowledge you. Customer service has just gone out the door. Sorry have to vent, I was in customer service over 13 years..and it bugs me. Good luck. But one thing I know...is you have to be persistent.

If one heats silicone to destruction, the most likely solid product will be silicon dioxide, or quartz, the primary compound in glass. It can be dissolved in hydrofluoric acid, but don't try this at home, or anywhere else. The metal it has coated may be dissolved faster and the fumes are toxic. The good news, such as it is, is that if the unbonded "glass" dust is vacuumed up or wiped up, the residue is unlikely to get in one's food, and would not be more harmful than eating outdoors in a dust storm, or eating a mud pie if one were young enough. Wiping may be better than vacuuming, depending on how well one's vacuum keeps dust out of its motor. Moving glass dust -- much like regular dust but possibly finer -- is not what you need in the vacuum's motor or in the exiting air. I would be concerned about the dust that makes it into the convection fan passages that are difficult to get to. Some consideration of the cost-effectiveness of oven replacement may be called for. In general, my condolences for the disasters that have befallen you.

Does the GC have somewhere to store it? I agree with keeping it dry (and probably not too cold) and think the GC should be responsible for its security and well-being.

Dryness outside may not be as important as moisture condensing on the unit when warmed inside. In that case, it is best to let it sit&dry 24 hours before powering.

interesting thoughts. Thanks for the feedback-- I'll talk with my GC and see if he can store it. If not, maybe we'll end up using the new oven as our "dining room" table!

Ours sat out in our carport (covered, but not enclosed) for months. Can't remember if it was in before the coldest of the weather, but I'm pretty sure it got down to freezing sometime during the time it was out. It was just installed, and seems to work fine. Not saying I'd recommend doing that, because we never intended it to be out that long, but time just got away from us.

Cold does no harm to electronics-heat is their enemy, not cold. However, as katorhb says, moisture condensing into water can cause problems. You need to bring it inside somewhere it is dry and wrap it in a couple of trash bags and tape them shut. Then it could sit outside under a tarp for a while with no problems. You will need to bring it inside say 48 hours prior to install to let it warm up slowly. To help eliminate moisture problems, put some moisture absorbing material inside the plastic trash bags before you seal them up. You can find it at HD or similar.

Why not phone the maker and ask them? Sometimes the info is also in the shipping instructions on the carton but that would a bit late to use in your case.

I'd worry it would walk away. Appliances do that at construction sites even when locked up in the house during construction.

Chances are that it has been sitting in an unheated or minimally heated warehouse & has been transported in unheated railcars or semi trailers so I wouldn't worry about the cold. I think your main concerns are keeping it dry and keeping it from getting legs.
