Why are so few people posting?
Comments (11)crete ...I'm with Marlene...post away!!! You always share good ideas & great GJ! Am sorry for your health care costs...terrible! I'm afraid I'm one who spends alot of time on Flea Market Gardening...I also do the posting there 2 days a week ...I joined Facebook for my family ...& have enjoyed it immensely since I can stay in contact to easily w/old & new, close-by & far away friends/family. I do check Garden Junk weekly (at the least) but it takes me double the time to post pics on the forum cause of the need to put them in Photobkt or another program first ... w/Facebk they can come right from my computer picture files. But I do love Garden Junk & appreciate all the many ideas & people on the forum ...so I'm trying to post sometimes! I also post on the Holiday Forum which is part of the Garden Web (Garden Junk) Jeanne S....See MoreStupid ( Possibly Hazardous to Me/ Offensive to You) Mistake?
Comments (10)Well, an update and an obsevation. I had taken a break from setting the traps, since I do not like the task, but had to resume when the skunks began doing damage again. Last night, I caught two more. I awoke at dawn, performed the necessary unpleasantries, and they were carried away with the weekly trash by 6:30 a.m. . So far, in six total days of trapping in my small lot, I have eliminated seven skunks. I had also gotten a raccoon, but after it chattering all night and keeping us awake, right as the sky began showing light, its' partner figured out how to release it, much to our amazement. My observation is this: the animals are strongly attracted to the fish emulsion that I feed to my vegetables. I feed everything once per week, a bit of the garden nearly every day, and those were the areas being dug up. I had determined to only fertilize early of a morning, then thoroughly water in the evening to dissipate the scent. Alas, we went to bed early, I forgot to water my new plants set in that day, and the skunks scratched them to death before they were themselves trapped. I am hopeful that by careful attention to my applications of the fish emulsion, and watering in well, I can cut way back on the trapping/ euthanizing....See MoreWhy are some people so stupid?
Comments (7)Oh, now builders - there's another story. We built our house we're in now. The builder only put shrubs in front of the house. We planted our own trees. Then someone moved in a couple doors down who works for the city. City ordinance says the builder must provide a tree in each front yard, so they came back with the sickest bunch of trees and plunked them down in the front of each house. They didn't add one to our yard since we already had trees planted. At least four of those trees had borers in them when they were planted and were since replaced. I remember looking at these trees thinking they were the worst looking trees I've seen - not in good shape at all. Some of them have filled out and have become nice looking trees. Builders really don't get the landscaping part at all. They just plunk a bunch of shrubs in across the front and call it "beautifully landscaped." I don't think they put in more than $200. There is a neighborhood here in Allen that has some nice looking Knockout roses. They look great. I just hope they don't treat them like annuals and rip them out in the fall!...See MoreWhy to so many people let pets ruin their financial picture?
Comments (71)It looks like I'm going to be the first one to own up to letting my pets ruin my financial future. I don't know why other people do it, but I do it because I love & adore my pets & I don't love money. I also choose to have monthly donations to "doctors without borders" & "greenpeace" deducted from my bank account, because I also love other people of all nationalities, & the planet, & I don't love money. I have a very reasonable annual income, but I drive a second hand car, wear mostly second hand or chain store clothing, & have mostly second hand furniture. I don't have organized holidays away from home, don't drink, gamble, smoke or go out to entertainment activites. Why? Because I love the things I can do with my money if I don't waste it on meaningless crap. My three teenagers DO love meaningless crap in the forms of surf label clothing, going out, i-pods, laptops, & mind blowing expensive sneakers. (o.k., I do use the macintosh laptop a fair bit) And I fund all this silliness because I love & adore my kids & it seems to give them a lot of meaningful pleasure. No, I'm not some dried up old lesbian or an old maid who wouldn't know how to have a good time if I won ten billion dollars. In my 20's I earned & spent a lot of money & lived the "champagne & caviar" materialistic lifestyle. Yes, it can be fun. But for me, it was hollow. I'm happily married to a man who also values the simple things in life. Canoeing on a remote river at sunset, throwing a stick on a lonely beach for our nine dogs, riding through the bush at sunrise, these are the things that make my life worthwhile. Things that don't cost money, because the more you consume, the less you live. Our nine dogs provide more than friendship & company for me. They are my THERAPY every single day. They're my mates, & I willingly undertake the challenge to love them as much as they love me. It's a big challenge, because they would die for me without a second thought. Am I serious? Yes. Am I mad? Probably. But you only get as much love as you give in this world, & I make a point of loving everything that I can. The dogs are by far the easiest & the reciprocity is a joy....See Morenewbieroselover
