My best guess would be circa early 1950's. I had one (which was called a secretary's desk) when I started working in 1960 and it was about 10 years old at that time.

I've seen desks like that well before 1950....but can't say at the earliest.

Did everybody see this? I'm also helping by trying to pick off doable tasks to work on and to get them done, rather than fussing about many things, none of which are about to get finished. This is a mental infrastructure readjustment! This is a really great thought; we should all take note. Jannie, the last time I tried to give a school a computer, they didn't want it. in order to simplify their lives, they make sure all the computers in the school are exactly the same--and UP TO DATE. That way, fixing problems is much easier. (most scools nowadays have Macintosh computers that they get a pretty good deal on) Also, most schools do a lot of work on the Internet, and the older the computer, the harder that is. Plus, the legal aspects of licensing don't make this easy--the license for the operating system is assigned to YOU, not to the machine, and you aren't legally allowed to sell it. So the school would have to buy a new operating system, new software, etc. I bet you can't find a school that will take that off your hands. In fact, if it's old enough that you are getting rid of it, why would you want to saddle someone else w/ it? My vote: offer it up on Freecycle or Craigslist. Your NIL's son-in-law is the husband of her daughter,a nd her daughter is next of kin. Even though you bought your NIL the computer, that doesn't mean it should be returned to you when she died. It was her possession, and it should go to her next of kin.

Thanks for the ideas! Yes, something like a narrow bookcase, with a built in place look. Didn't want doors though. The kitchen has lots of doors, and, if you walked past the "proposed shelf", you would round another corner and see a room surrounded by cabinets up high. (office/utility room). MANY more doors. GLASS pane doors? Now that is do-able. BUT, Just wanting "open", although, I do realize the cleaning factor. (well, I "think" I do?? LOL) Been kicking around some twists that were suggested. 1) make one of the shelves protrude out several more inches, about counter height. (keys, and...stuff). Not sure if this would distract from the "mason jar purpose" though? 2) A simple tarnished steel rod across the openings. So no jars can jump off and run away. about half the diameter of an ink pen. (surely this wouldn't be TOO rustic considering a bunch of old mason jars full of nuts and coffee?) 3) Two row wine bottle rack way up high. In place of the top shelf.

So I'm a year late in commenting but SO happy I got to see this amazing kitchen, thanks to the "best reveals" thread. I followed this with interest and worried a little, you seemed so ambitious in including a gazillion good ideas and I wasn't sure it would lead to a cohesive, attractive result. It is a stunning kitchen, full of beauty and functionality but it is more than that, you've infused it with depth and soul. Congratulations!

Pull the wide middle drawer open ( the one between the left and right stacks ). You should then be able to open the side drawers. If you notice, the middle one is the only drawer with a lock. This way, when you close and lock the big middle drawer, it also locks both side drawer stacks. If this doesn't work, then something jammed when the top was put on. Remove the top, check for a mechanism that may be bent etc.. I would not think that the middle drawer would have to be open in order to open the side drawers, but it would have to be unlocked.

Thanks for the replies. Any ideas of a reasonable asking price range? We are "upgrading" from this one solid oak desk to two new Dania Melamine over MDF desks, and due to space constraints we need to sell it. I doubt that someone will be asking 60 years hence what the Dania desks are worth. They will have been resting in a landfill long before then. Of course by then there probably won't be landfills.

They do change hands for money, but around here people give them away too. Various iterations of the classic oak office/teacher's desk are literally a dime a dozen around here.

Not to be discouraging, but if you really want to move it, aim low.

We sold that EXACT desk on Craigslist 1-2 years ago and got (I think) $150 for it.

Thanks for the price information! Hey, I've already sold it for an outrageous price to a gentleman from Nigeria. Of course, he needed some of my personal data to fill out the cashiers check, which should be arriving any day via UPS.
A Google search found that the verbiage used by the scammer was used in hundreds of other scam attempts.

Meanwhile, my brother received an urgent message from the UK supposedly sent from our sister-in-law. She had been robbed in London, and was at the airport waiting for him to send funds for a ticket home. A phone call revealed that she was still in the USA and had never left home.

Was this after you listed it on craigslist, or just from your posting here?

A remarkable number of our friends and acquaintances have been allegedly stuck needing money too... They all send the same message :-) (for the gullible among us: NOT).
