When did the 'master' bedroom become the 'principal' bedroom?
Comments (32)I’m in Canada and the townhome we just bought used “master bedroom” and ”second bedroom”. The bathroom is actually “master bathroom” too, though en-suite is more popular. I think “principal bedroom” works well, especially if describing short term rentals (where multiple couples might share a rental), rentals by you adults (again where roommates might be sharing), or multi- generational homes. You still want to confirm which room is the largest, but there isn’t a need to explain who then “master” of the home is. Random point- when I’ve booked Airline tickets for my son, he always gets the prefix “master” vs “Mr” on his tickets/booking. Hubby and I always get a good laugh, as there are definitely days where it feels like he runs things in our home! Maybe he should get the new master bedroom haha....See MoreWhat is the cost of deck off 2nd story master bedroom?
Comments (13)@Virgil - Great questions. I don't see us building a fancy deck, just something that matches the house (beach style with hip roof, hardy board siding). Where could I do some research on building materials? For option 1, I would imagine a deck like this one, [https://www.houzz.com/photos/32nd-street-craftsman-exterior-los-angeles-phvw-vp~209718[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/32nd-street-craftsman-exterior-los-angeles-phvw-vp~209718). For option 2, I would imagine a deck like this one, [https://www.houzz.com/photos/630-b-beach-style-exterior-san-diego-phvw-vp~90504781[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/630-b-beach-style-exterior-san-diego-phvw-vp~90504781). For option 3, I would imagine a no-deck-look like this one, [https://www.houzz.com/photos/incredibly-green-home-of-chevy-chase-craftsman-exterior-seattle-phvw-vp~360047[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/incredibly-green-home-of-chevy-chase-craftsman-exterior-seattle-phvw-vp~360047). @kudzu9 - I live in San Diego (yes, I know, expensive). I wish it was like asking, "How much does a new car cost?" because I could go online and figure that out in 10 minutes. And I'd know that I'd never have to pay more than the sticker price! @Sophie - Thankfully, you're not the CFO of my company. ;) $68k is a trip around the world with my family....See MoreIs it worth shrinking master bedroom to get a master bath?
Comments (38)I'm confused. are you planning on selling soon or living here for a while? if you're leaving soon and think this is a teardown, why even bother having anything done to it? (just need a little clarification is all.) if having a smaller bedroom means you get a necessary extra bathroom, I say go for it! I've lived in three homes with my husband, and every single one of them had tiny bedrooms. they're really cozy, and they seem to stay a little warmer at night after we turn the heat down. then we can use the larger spaces for offices, workrooms, etc. as for small closets: I always used the office closet for my clothes. this system has worked well for us for many years....See MoreWindow treatments for sliding door + 2 windows in Master Bedroom
Comments (1)You have such a nice view I can see why you would want to retain it during the day. I'd mount one rod from wall to wall, and use drapery panels. One panel on each end and wider panels in the middle around the sliders so you can pull them closed. Use a lightweight lined fabric so you can get teh fullness you need without taking up too much space. Don't use shutters. They block a LOT of light even when open, and you would never have a clear view outdoors....See Moregopintos
