Movies about caregivers, illness, and the like. And they don't all have to be morbid or sad, either.

We just saw The Intouchables, a French film based on a true story. It's about a very wealthy paraplegic Frenchman who hires a Senegalese immigrant from the projects as a caregiver. Very funny and yet very real.

Another wonderful movie is "Away From Her" with Julie Christie, who was nominated for best actress for her portrayal of a woman with early-onset Alzheimers.

And there's "The Savages" with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney (Oscar-nominated) as siblings dealing with their father.

No offense, but there's to much sadness in life without choosing to watch it. If it was a movie about how to care for a patient that would be helpful. My husband had AZ and Mom had dementia, I don't want to go there in any form. I don't have a lot of years left and I want them to be as carefree as I can make them. I think to often about losing my own memory, don't need to see more of it. I had rather watch up lifting movies, they make me feel good, especially if Sean Connery is in it. LOL

All the movies I mention focus on the caregiver, and none of them are morbid at all. There's a lot of humor in each, and all are uplifting and thought-provoking.

Elkay..You furry, feathered and finny friends are exceptional. Their history is so sad. While reading your post, I felt like crying. Terribly depressing. People can be so damn cruel. Thankfully, they now have a happy, secure home with loving parents. In pic one, Kodi's eyes look blue. Are they? It's sad hearing shelters are over-crowded. For those who can't afford it, there are places where spaying and neutering is done by how much a person makes. Lower income families, etc. The woman who dropped Kodi off is a horrible person. Too bad stricter laws aren't made for people like her. She and other monsters should not be able to buy/adopt any pet. If they do, the pet should be taken w/o legal BS, and she should be fined. A steep fine. If the fine can't be paid, 'and since jails are crowded,' she should, at the minimum, be ordered to complete several hours of community service. If it was up to me, she'd be chained to a pole, given stale bread and dirty water, three times a day. Your Conure is a beauty. Yes, they're talkers, but need to be talked to daily. Repeated words, then phrases. They're tinny voice is so cute. Conures playful and acrobatic. Little clowns. Do you clip his wings? Although he's older, if you clip, then sit down and talk/play with him on a daily basis, he still might talk. Birds listen and watch their parents/us. You'd be suprised what they'll repeat. So, watch your language. lol. Love your blue Betta..Aren't they the best? Purple...so is the Dane in the picture your dog? I love Danes. Do you know his weight. Funny story about your gate. lol. You've got some intelligent canines in your neighborhood. Don't get upset, they only want to play. :) Rachel..Another cutie. Bogie sees something out the window he wants to play with..Whatever, he's interested and very curious. :) Larry. At first glance I thought they were twins..Beautiful colors. Think they enjoy having their pictures taken. Asleep. Pets are enigmas for sure. Do you have sand or gravel in the tank? I used to breed Bettas, among other fish. They'd dig gravel, like dogs dig garden soil. I've seen Betta's digging, but they never hid underneath. How long was he gone? Sheesh, I'd have assumed he jumped out of the tank. lol. Hi Terrance nice to meet ya and thanks for the reply! Yes I must get outside in scratch that dirt. Where I live now, in Aberdeen, we gravelled the whole backyard due to having multiple horses in the house. LOL..my great danes make a terrible miss on grass so it was the only way. And mud? As in garden? Would be destroyed unless I built a fence around it. We are planning to buy a house soon, so hope to change all that. I can not wait to get into roses outdoors and perenials, grow my own veggies. Lily's too! I hope he builds me a greenhouse, as I am a die hard fan of tropicals. Plumeria and hibiscus are my fave's. Been growing them indoors for a year under lights, and lots of blooms. I also enjoy propagating and starting from seed indoors. Fun stuff! I guess when you grow up as a small town girl, you stick to your roots..hahahaha..too funny! Krista - sorry I left Sharon's name in the original post, so she knew I ressurrected it.

OK, finally took some pics of the stringer and transition to baseboard in hall at top of stairs - think this will work? Lovely gap - over 1" from wall to edge of stringer Colonial "stop" molding (not thick enough so have to lay flat instead of laying it against wall - my cousin was going to finish off the end with a mitred return, just tape holding it right now) But that still leaves the problem of transitioning to the thinner, lower baseboard, and a gap b/t the stringer and the wall So I'm thinking of running the stop molding vertically as well - he'll just have to figure out the angle to join the 2 pieces of stop (and of course cut the baseboard so it fits snugly against it). Either that, or just do the mitred return and then put a block in between like crazyhouse6 did? Which do you think will look better? I want to run the stop vertically at the bottom of the stringer too, to hide the end grain and cover the awkward chipped corner bead on the drywall where it meets the stringer just to the side of the newels (and not do the molding where DH is holding it here, just run the oak board to "box" in the bottom of the newel higher than the stringer), so would it be best to do the same treatment top and bottom? Sorry, I can get DH to hold the newel and take some better pics of the bottom tonight while I hold the stop over the end grain.

I was just in a RH store today, and I really loved the new look. I just painted a desk in their color slate and it looks beautiful. It may not be for everyone, but it makes me feel calm. Very much the style of Velvet and Linen Blog. Their home is so gorgeous! They have infused some color along with the greige. Here are some pictures of their children's study they just finished.I know they do purchase things form RH, and spice it up a bit. RH has some great classic pieces. They are pricey though! I didn't say they were morbid, It's just more sadness in our lives if we have been hurt by this. There was a new movie out a few years ago about a mother losing her memory and had to be convinced to go to a home. That was before I experienced dementia in any form and I still didn't want to see it. I don't watch movies about drugs and delinquent teens either. Like I said there is to much sadness in our daily lives without watching it on TV.

Agree with sushipup - Intouchables is a GREAT movie. Definitely worth viewing; might be on Netflix now?

And although it's not strictly a caregiver's movie, Michael Haneke's fabulous "Amour" was an easy winner for Best Foreign Film at this year's Oscars.

Another good one is Robot and Frank, set in the 'near future' with a robot as a caregiver.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

I too don't want to watch movies about what I'm living thru'. They make me cry. I want funny and light hearted.

I wish I had a really good, futuristic robot to help -- that would always be here and wouldn't decide to just not show up one day. Grrrrrrr.

Big Fish - which is kind of a round-about way of addressing a relationship with an aging or ailing parent, but it's one that brought me a great deal of comfort.

NeverWas, which is also not an easy film to watch, but is also about coming to terms with our parents, and our selves as humans.

have heard great things about Robot and Frank, it's on the list, but the list is long, and free hours are short.

Years ago Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward was in a TV movie playing a woman with early Alzheimers. I think it was called "Do You Remember Love?" There was a scene where she couldn't find her car in a parking garage. Hmmm, that's happened to me.

Jannie, One time I drove my Dad's car downtown and parked in an underground garage. At that time they had attendants to get your car for you. When he asked what car I gave him "MY" car information. He finally came back and said I can't find your car anywhere. I forgot I drove Dad's. LOL Needless to say I felt a little foolish!

I saw this movie and agree with you. It was very good.

On that note, I'd like to see more movies made about folks that overcome disabilities or at least find some sort of peace with their situation.
