Help for anyone dealing with incontinence

I'm not sure I posted this before, but I solved Mom's fecal incontinence problem a while back and wanted to make sure anyone who is dealing with this right now is aware of it.

Mom had diarrhia very badly, on and off, for over a week (we thought she was well, then it started again, etc), and ended up in the hospital, dehydrated. They gave her IV and she was back to her normal self, but the diarrhia wasn't controlled at all.

So. I did a lot of research, and went to our Health Food store for IBS Formula for Seniors. I bought RenewLife brand I.B.S. I and II (they come together, in a kit). I gave her two #I caps in the mornings, and two #II caps in the evening. Her diarrhea stopped completely in a few days!!

From my research I also learned that the good bacteria needed replacing, as it was discarded with the 'bad', so I also bought UDO'S Choice Probiotics (must be refrigerated).

This combination of IBS formula contains:

L-Glutamine 418mg

A-Acetyl-Glucosamine 18mg

Gamma Oryzanol 10mg

Proprietary Herbal Blend 5mg

(consisting of: cranesbill root (geranium maculatum), ginger root, marigold flower, marshmallow root)

It contains NO: wheat, gluten, soy, yeast,animal products, salt, or artificial flavour or colours, no preservatives)

As for the Probiotic, "Each vegetable capsule contains 12million viable cells at time of manufacture" (ie keep refrigerated) They list all the various lactobaccilin, etc, but it's very hard to read them all....suffice it to say, both my 91-year old Mother and I have taken it regularly (I'm sensitive to MSG and have to locate a washroom very quickly after eating in restaurants) with no side-effects.

As I said: stopped my Mother's diarrhea dead in its tracks, and she had an almost constant, immediate problem.

I suppose I have to say to check with your doctor before taking these herbals, but I didn't. Yes...always the rebel!

Both the brands I use are without equal, imho, after much research, and UDO'S Choice has been prescribed by my naturopath, also.

I hope this helps someone out there....I'm sure it will!

My mom has just the opposite, she's got constipation.. To the point where she squeezes so bad I think she's going to have a heart attack on the bowl sometimes.. When we moved here I almost had to take her to the hospital.. She was so badly constipated at my brother and sis in laws house I wanted to die. She had to sleep in their bed.. My house wasn't ready to move into yet, I hadn't signed on the dotted line yet.. So we couldn't move in yet.

It was a mess and so was my poor mom.. She's been through alot in her 85 year's..

Make sure she isn't eating anything on the B.R.A.T. diet: white bread, rice, apple/sauce, toast. Those are items that are specified for the opposite problem, and what we make certain my Mom has each day. Make sure she has bran, dried fruits, etc.
Have you tried Prodium (like little chocolate pellets that can be taken by the spoonful)? Worked very well for my Dad when he was very constipated in his later years..It's not a prescription......hth!

Carolyn, I completely agree with you regarding the pull-on elastic-waist pants. Someone with weak arm strength and arthritic hands & fingers cannot easily pull those things up. And then if you've got a dirty Depends, it's impossible to get the pants past it without smearing. Thanks for encouraging me to look for disabled clothing sites. I found one, listed below, that has velcro side closures that would make getting in and out of the pants so much easier. Asolo, today my mom's doctor took her off Zelnorm & the daily Dulcolax. Now both Milk of Magnesia & Dulcolax will be on an as-needed basis. My mom is supposed to mark her calendar when whe has a bowel movement so we can monitor her & catch a constipation episode before it gets too serious. So now I've got to really stay on top of her fluid intake and the fruit & vegetables in her diet. I provide her with bottled water and additional produce, but she doesn't eat it. She receives her meals at the assisted living facility, but she doesn't make wise choices. Agnes, your advice was very thoughtful and sound. This morning, though, before we left for the doctor appointment, my mother told me she had two bowel movements. So I took my chances and took her to a neighborhood Greek restaurant for lunch (we're Greek). The owner gave her a complimentary birthday baklava. No accidents. And she was able to hold everything in until she got back to her apartment. Thanks for all of your replies. Most house trained dogs do not go back on their training unless something is wrong. At least that has been my experience. If your girl is spayed she could be suffering from spay incontinence...my vet said sometimes the symptoms don't show up for years. I spoke to him recently because my dog....who is usually very good also started leaving spots on the sofa....where she sleeps. We took her to the vet and sure enough she had a UTI. As far as UTI's go...it depends how long your dog has had it ...UTI's spread quickly at least in humans so it is possible the meds have alot of work to do. Now as for the proin...I used this med on my old girl who started having accidents in the house as well. I would not take your dog off it. Proin is usually given for incontinence and if your dog is house trained the chances are that she needs the meds. As a dog gets older the muscles get weak and they can't hold it in. Not sure why the Proin helps but it does. If I were you I would continue doing what the vet says....even a dog that drinks too much water if trained will let the owner know they need to go potty. Now I have only had experience with two dogs...so other opinions may vary. I'm only going from what I know. Oh and as for the color and odor...well it happens to people too....sometimes you go potty, and it is yellow, other times it is clear....I believe it has something to do with the vitamins or waste and stuff in your body that produces the color....but if you drink alot of water and then go pee....well you will get clear pee that does not smell too, especially if you are going potty more often.

Drop those bags at the front door lock it and then race to the john??? I've worn a pad (stayfree anykind except the little flimsy ones) for years. I also pin the front end to the panty so they don't drop out on to the floor somewhere. Just making sure I change them a lot and keep doggie doodoo bags to put them in in the bathroom trash. I like to shoot a spray of some kind of fem deo spray around the panty area too. (for my own peace of mind) I'm also trying not to drink a lot at night say from 8pm on no sodas teas etc. I use Biotene for dry mouth so sometimes just a drop or two of that will moisten my mouth. As long as you can go undected it's ok out in public. I think men have the same problem but don't talk about it/. I want to mention that if you get any little sores on your bum/ cheeks/ rear= end because of whatever - a good product to have on hand is "no sting spray on bandage". a few rub-ons of it makes a protective coating and they will heal faster saddle sores. . . .

One drug they use for that is Proin. Paisley was on it for several years and it worked really well at first. We eventually had to supplement that and make her some diapers that velcroed on and held a small pad, she didn't mind that at all and it was so much easier than constantly wiping up and cleaning dribbles. The Proin was like a miracle drug at first, call your vet and ask them about it. If you end up needing diapers, I can send you my pattern. Prodium?? I never heard of it.. Where can I get that??? She eats bran every morning for breakfast.. Forgot to say that in my last post.. In a bit of a hurry here.. Thanks for your answers, I'm going to tell her..

Sorry, I mis-spelled it: it's Prodiem. I've included the web-site and noticed that it likely contains senna, also...It's Canadian, but available to the U.S.
I hope it would work for your Mom as it did for my Dad, but your poor Mom may require a hospital visit. Mine went to emerg eventually, when she was in SO much discomfort that she'd have done anything to find relief! The staff have seen many such cases in emerg...it's so common among the elderly.

Give Milk of Magnesium a try for constipation. It is very gentle and can be taken daily. It also helps with spasticity/muscle tightness and relaxation.
