I've narrowed vent hoods down to two...

Please help me pick one. I have never had this much trouble picking a single appliance. All the others are bought and paid for.

This will be over a 36" induction cooktop that will get heavy use. I cook almost every day. Everything from steaks to stir fry to French toast .

My kitchen is modern so I want something that will fit in and not be obtrusive. I'd also like to keep costs down... Under $1000 please! My choices:

Kobe CH181 wall mount. At $986 for the hood and flue extension it's at the high end of my budget. Kobe is on my list based solely on the reviews. But I'm having a hard time justifying the expense for such basic styling. http://www.thenaturalhome.com/ch181.htm

Zephyr Roma wall mount. Lower price. Plus it appears the included duct cover will reach my 9'8" ceiling so I won't have the added expense of a flue extension. I also prefer the styling of this one. It will fit in with my contemporary kitchen beautifully. However, the mesh filters are a turn off and I can't find any reviews.

Curious which induction cooktop you selected. We're torn between induction and gas. We've heard that induction requires a lot of space beneath that's not combustible.

I like the Zephyr. Quiet too. An appliance dealer I met with last week recommended that brand to me, but a different model - it was lots of $$$$.

With regard to code for deep fryer placement in a commercial kitchen, refer to the National Fire Protection Assosication: NFPA 96 12.1.2.4 All deep fat fryers shall be installed with at least a 406-mm (16-in.) space between the fryer and surface flames from adjacent cooking equipment. I'm not claiming that this regulation is in building codes in all areas but it is a guideline. In my experience many inspectors will site "outside" sources such as these if local codes are not clear about requirements. Also keep in mind that if this is a commercial fryer unit, it may not meet safety requirements to be installed in a residential location. If you are building under permit, best to get all of this signed off by the planning department with specifics so that inspectors won't apply their own interpretation of code after you've already committed thousands of dollars to a certain configuration or plan. Although I am not that familiar with QF, I have heard good things about it. Jotul, on the other hand is an EXCELLENT stove. The difference id the material they're made of. Steel heats up faster and is more forgiving to an overfire. But it cools down faster too when the fire dies. Cast iron takes a little longer to heat up, but retains the heat longer which could mean less wood to maintain the heat during the fire. And it retains the heat after the fire dies. But when and if the stove is overfired, the cast iron can warp. It happens rarely, but it does happen. And if you get an enamel finish, an overfire can craze the finish. And as far as the "glass" breaking, it's really a difficult thing to do. Because the "glass" is really ceramic. A very hard material. Broken glass doesn't happen all that often.

patty Congrats on your remodel I guess I would ask what other elements are in the room? what color appliances, hardware, stools, furnishings, natural light, window treatments,rugs, wall color, lighting etc I can't see the flooring - posting a pic may help Picking a counter is very individual & we all "see" differently You noted a natural tumbled backsplash as likely - I read the TB - as warming up your palette - your cabs are considered cool - so I my initial reaction is I prefer that - I like warm/cool elements but again depends on the rest of the palette & your personal taste The NC reads cool to me - If that is used the rest of the elements should be cool - fabrics, hardware, wall color etc - or you will have colors that are fighting each other - a honed crema marfil backsplash wouldn't work, but a carrara would - tan/beige paints wouldn't work, but blues/greys would Another twist you could consider is having each sample honed & see if that helps to make a decision - that will give you 4 options and also sounds like you have some room to negotiate with the stone yard esp on the TB they want to move - offer 20% discounted pricing on that one if that is the one you would like, even if not, that may help to drive the decision Good luck

The 4-inch duct was too small for the original plan. Probably an 8-inch would have been needed and then the higher flow rate requirement could be made to put up with a bit more pressure loss than is desirable . Air velocity in the hood ducting should be in the 1000 to 2000 ft/min range. Even if you only put a short length of 4-inch duct in a 10-inch duct path there would be very high pressure loss. (On-line calculators exist for these types of analyses.) And if you used a screaming mimi aerospace blower to get the flow rate at the pressure loss, the duct air velocity would be absurdly high and would try to compete with the blower for noise champion. Venting down and out may not be a violation, so long as your AHJ is OK with the details including slopes, sealing, and access, but such paths tend to be restrictive for various secondary reasons. And it seems you are limited to 4-inches in that direction, if I understood your message. I have no real picture of your kitchen, but if it were my kitchen I would use a 10-inch duct from the hood to the nearest exterior wall that didn't dump onto a deck or an openable window. I'd either enclose the duct with a soffit, or make it decorative. Alternatively the duct would go to a point on the ceiling where an upstairs chase could be added to get the path to the attic where it can deviate as necessary to get to a good position for a roof blower. For reference, I have seen images of wood-everywhere type structures where a hood duct went skyward across the room to the desired point on the roof. This appeared to be at least 20 ft high. Such schemes require stainless steel ducting to look decent. This wouldn't do if the ambience were not rustic. Can you extend the wall studs on the existing wall by 6 inches (cutting out 6 inches of space next to the cooktop) so there is space to have enough duct area?

Weiss, we went with the Kenmore Elite. We will have a fake drawer right underneath and then a warming drawer below that. I don't see any difference in the space requirement from my old Dacor gas cooktop. I gave our cabinet maker all the specs so I assume he knows what he's doing. I hope!

Why not Elica....the world's largest hood manufacturer. Check them out! They build a really good hood!

I've looked at everything. Elica and Vent-a-hood are outside my budget for what I need, which is a 'free standing' wall mounted vent hood that extends to the ceiling. There is no cabinetry above my cooktop. I'm starting to have second thoughts about that now, because I could have had a lot more choices with an under-cabinet mount. Ah well. I think it's too late to change it.

Baffles are more expensive to construct than mesh filters, and demand hood designs that, at a minimum, use more sheet metal. So for a low price point, mesh filters are going to have to be tolerated.

Thanks for asking. I went with the Zephyr Roma, not only because I preferred the look of it but also because the flue cover that comes standard is high enough to reach my ceiling. I would have had to order a flue extension if I went with the Kobe. The Zephyr was $777 vs. $1000+ for the Kobe w/extension.

The only hitch now is that it is backordered. Should be here the last week of April, and we are moving in May 6th.

I can tell you we went thru the same "agonizing" process of trying to decide what hood to go with. We finally bit the bullet and went with Kobe. I installed it two days ago, and am more than very happy with everything about it. A very sincere thanks to all that contribute and share on this forum.
