Can anyone tell me the value of this Franklin Sewing machine?

This is a franklin sewing machine with a foot pedal and the actual peice is inside the table. I was wondering if anyone knows what year it was made and what the value would be.

I'm assuming you are speaking of a treadle sewing machine when you say foot pedal? Franklin was a Sears and Roebuck brand and they were first manufactured around 1910. They were supposed to be a copy of Singer.

The value of intact treadle machines varies wildly from one part of the country to the next. I have purchased them as cheaply as twenty five dollars (including the cabinet) to seventy five dollars. A really nice one in good shape with an attractive cabinet would bring about $200 here. The local city school systems were still using treadle machines in their sewing classes into the 1960s and they were still being made until the 1950s.

I have five or six old machines like that and sort of collect them. You'll find the actual machine heads are often out of the machine when they're sold, and the cabinets with the treadle mechanisms are often more expensive than the old machines. Ebay usually has a bunch of them and they're sometimes found at estate auctions.

If it suits your decor, frame it and hang it. But with a certificate of authenticity that says "This print has been reproduced from the artist's original painting on the finest pH neutral papers using the offset lithography process with light-fast, fade resistant inks" It's a mass-produced print. Offset lithography sounds impressive, but it's just a printing process done with a huge mechanical press. And 6 colors of ink. What you have came out of the same printing press as any other poster. I've seen the process, back when I was responsible for printing use manuals. My printer also made most of the low to medium volume "art prints" sold in the area because their press was ideal size for runs of 50-1000. They took a really good photo or scan of the painting, separated the colors and made the printing plates, and printed copies. Then someone from the printer's staff inspected the copies (they had a machine that could compare the original with the print and separate those that didn't quite match). The actual artist time involved is scribbling a signature, because the numbering is often done by a hired hand. The "personal inspection" is usually limited to "Yup, that's a print". The xxx of yyy numbering DOES mean something with true lithography and true etchings, because the print quality declines with each print. But an offset litho press can make several thousand copies before you spot any degradation at all. I'm not dissing artists who sell prints - it's one way for them to make gas money at art fairs, selling prints to people like me who can't afford their originals - it's the ones like Kincade and Kovach who issue these certificates implying that it's something special that bug me.

The number imprinted on the slide plate over the bobbin run is indeed your serial number. Franklins were made by the Domestic Sewing Machine company and were one of the brands very typically found in Montgomery Ward turn of the century catalogues. White eventually bought out Domestic. I'm not sure what year the machines sold under the Franklin badge ceased production. I used to have a bunch of material on sewing machine manufacture dates and who badged what but I'd not know how easily I can find it. I have a modest collection of old machines. But this is a start to point you in the right direction.

yes we have a 1910 franklin thread sewing machine great shape oak cabinet is beautiful very shinny still we haven't painted or varnished it just as is also have several replacement parts for it very antique the draws are in great touch there is also a key to lock each draw will post up pic soon let me know we are willing to sell at a really good price its in great shape. to be sold at a low price.

IM NOT SELLING IT ON THIS SITE I JUST ASKED A QUESTION THE VALUE OF THIS ANTIQUE TREAD SEWING MACHINE IN THE CONDITION THAT I MENTIONED ABOVE SIMPLY SAYING ID LIKE TO SELL IT BUT NOT SURE OF ITS VALUE SINCE THERE WAS A PREVIOUS QUESTION THAT I WAS ABOUT TO ASK I FIGURE ID GIVE A DISCRIPTION OF SINCE I DONT HAVE A PIC.
