How should I find an appraiser?

I just found out that my antique Louis XV furniture is not covered under my homeowner's insurance, except as depreciated furniture worth almost nothing. Even though I have all the original sales receipts showing the total value of about $40,000 for eight pieces, my insurance company will only put a rider on the furniture with a formal appraisal. How do I find someone who is trustworthy and charges a reasonable rate? What is a reasonable rate? I purchased most of the furniture in the last five years in California and now live in Washington DC. Any advice would be appreciated!
