hansgrohe thermobalance III - likes/dislikes

We're thinking of using this rough for our bathroom remodel. We're planning on have a tub spout, fixed shower head and a handheld on sliding bar. We have young kids. I like to know what experience people had with this valve unit. Are you still happy with it? Does it have adequate volume control? Is the mechanism still operating smoothly? I went to two showrooms and the units on display were very difficult to turn. I'm hoping that's just the fact that it gets handle by so many people and that it wasn't install correctly but I'm a little nervous about the reliability of it.

We're trying to limit the number of holes/controls on the wall since our bathroom is fairly small. Does anyone have other recommendations?

Well, since no one has responded I thought I'd give you my Hansgrohe experience, if it helps. I don't have the Thermobalance III and don't have a tub. I have a different model - 2 of them - and they work perfectly. I have the raindance allrounder handheld, plus a fixed shower head. I love setting the temperature once and then just using the control to adjust the water flow. It's not difficult to turn at all.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I do appreciate it. I'm somewhat surprised that no one else responded to the post since I remember reading post of people that used this valve. Anyway, I'm pretty sure we're going to use the valve and use the Solaris trim. Everywhere I've called to inquire about the valve, they seem favorable in general about hansgrohe product. Gives me more confidence to use them. We did our kitchen remodel several years ago and I don't remember being so stress with decisions like I am with this small bathroom.

They do include notes in the installation instructions for the TBIII along the lines of "The Themobalance III valve requires a Thermbalance III trim kit. Do not attempt to use any other trim kit with this valve." You could also call their tech service and ask. Stops are generally required in commercial buildings and apartment buildings, etc, where it would be impractical to turn off a portion of or the entire water supply to work on one valve in one apartment. The stops allow the building's water to remain on while working on the valve. They can certainly be used in residential, I've done it several times. I usually control water flow to individual areas in a house with full-flow 1/4-turn ball valves in the basement. A set for the kitchen. A set for the bathroom, etc.

Ecostat is the replacement trim . Its what goes in the iBox mongo talked about. Temp is set by the big handle and feature is selected by the smaller top handle. Available is 5-6 styles of handle and as a 1, 2, or 3, feature setup just like the Thermobalance I, II , III. I still like the old system better. Here is a link that might be useful: Ecostat

socalgrl, Thanks for your reply. We are also the exact same heights so I would take your advice but...apparently, I have the world's dumbest plumber. He kept telling me that the shower shelf was adjustable and could go anywhere on the bar so yesterday, I pulled the whole thing out and played with it to see how to put it together (the same one you have) and the shelf HAS to be on the bottom like the picture. Now I have a problem-grrr. He mounted the elbow 4 inches below the valve and if I lower the bar, the hose will run over the shelf. As it is now, there is only one way to mount the bar and the height is going to be too tall for even dh at 6'2". I am about to cry. So the shelf will be directly below the valve/plate/handle to turn on the water and above the elbow for the hose and that puts the bottom of the bar 40 some inches from the shower floor-ack! I wanted to be able to flip the head over to be able to use the spray at least on my lower back. (I love this thing and how it flips!) I think I will try and take some pictures and see if anyone here can help me figure it out. The painter comes tomorrow so I still have a few days. Thanks again!

The shelves.... We originally wanted a 30" x 12" niche but when we opened up the wall, there was a septic vent smack in the middle. We decided on 2 niches instead, I wassn't about to mess around with those pipes. When figuring the tile layout for the design I wanted, our friend suggested that we oversize the niches so the tile would lay out nice - he suggested 18 x 18 niches and I freaked. But the 12x12 would not have been big enough for the 3 kids and all their stuff. He suggested a granite shelf on the bottom and then one above it to make a shelf for soap, razors, etc. We talked about the length and width of the shelves, but never the depth. When I picked up the shelves from the granite fabricator, I freaked - they were 1 1/4" thick just like the countertop was being made. Friend said, don't worry, they would be perfect. They are. I honestly wouldn't want them any thinner. When he laid the tile, the bottom shelf slid in tightly and then he cut the bullnose on the side and the back tiles so the top granite shelf sits on the cut tiles all around. The tiles abouve the top shelf are full 6 x 6 and as you can see, we have enough height for those huge oversized shampoo and conditioner bottles. There is kerdi behind so no worries about water issues and they were all caulked and all afterwards. Being the over-emotional one, I figured this design that had been in head my for 2 years was ruined when I saw how thick those shelves were, but I wouldn't want them any different. I think they 'fit' the design perfectly as is. And I just love the niches. Before, the kids had a tiny corner shelf and bottles were all over the place, now there is enough room for everything plus space for guests when they are here.

For what it's worth we have fixtures from hansgrohe in the bathroom of our new house.

All I can say is that they have worked flawlessly so far--we are very pleased. Buy them on line--you will get a better deal.

We have a Thermobalance III that's in a shower and feeds a fixed and a handheld head. No tub spout. Works fine, though the install was slightly complicated- you can't plug the #1 outlet (tub spout), so it's tied into the #2 outlet (fixed shower). Your install is different, but that does make me think of how the valve's set up. You can only run the tub spout or some combo of the 2 showerheads, not both.

It's been in use for ~18 mo.s w/o incident. The temp setting has a detent at 90F or so- we use that when we toss the munchkin in the shower w/ one of us. Volume control is basically on/off, with a slight bit of control between how much goes to the fixed and how much to the handheld.

I'd do it again b/c it is a very simple look to the controls.
