Review of Samsung 29 Cu. Ft. French Door Fridge
Comments (37)Freshman, You asked if I saw the Whirlpool Latitude (their new ~28 cu ft French-door refrigerator). Sorry it's taking me so long to respond, but construction to repair flood damage here has kept me busy. Yes, I did look at the Latitude on a couple of occasions. I think it will be strong competition for the Samsung, containing most of the same features. The Latitude does offer a superior ice maker that is in the door and the bin is easily removable. The display has more info than the Samsung, such as the TOD, and the water dispenser is adjustable, so you can fill large vessels. What it is missing is the twin-cooling, but I haven't been convinced that's important. I dismissed the Whirlpool for my application solely because of esthetic design considerations. My kitchen and family room are one open space, and the fridge dominates, so getting the prettiest "monster" is very important. I need a black refrigerator (only because SS have grey sides -- anyone know of a SS with black sides?), and the Whirlpool black is a tinny looking metal vs the shine of the Samsung. I also am not wild about the design of the handles, but I could live with them if the finish suited me. I was told that KA will probably introduce a similar FD in about a year after the bugs have been worked out of the Latitude. I would expect the KA to have a bit more "polished" look. I think the Latitude would be a nice addition to many kitchens, it just doesn't seem to fit mine. I hope this helps. Ellencr...See MoreDoes anyone make a 42' freestanding fridge?
Comments (11)I can tell you from the experience of hanging around this planet for 68 years now and having many Fridges and seeing many over that time span, That the bigger the better as far as Fridges go, and also the shallower ones IE CD or built in, just make everything so easy to see. We love our 48" Built in Jenn-air Fridge, I paid $4588 for it 5 years ago (That's one reason why you see soooooo many posts by me on "Fixed Pricing/Gouging". I got mine before Jann-air was MSRPed, or whatever, and I hate to see folks hafta "Shovel out" almost twice what I did then for something similar. But being our World is what it is , in the US Today, I would still splurge for the Freedom columns. If I had it to do again, I probably would, Just cause we like as much "Kewl Space" as possible alto to be honest the 48" pretty well fits the bill as far as space, cept the freezer is always stuffed full. You may be younger than us, but we figgered this our last kitchen---we will leave this house "Toes First" so I dont regret at all any of the money we spent for it, and almost daily, the wife "Still Proclaims" how much She Loves the Kitchen!!!! Comments (16)I would just like to comment even though this is an older thread. French door refrigerators with in-the-door ice dispensers are known to have problems. This is due to the ice maker being located in the refrigerator area rather than the freezer area. All brands have problems. We had to replace our Samsung french door refrigerator after two years because of recurrent problems with ice buildup around the ice maker making it unusable. Samsung repairmen came out several times, the last time even replacing the entire ice maker but to no avail. After much research I learned that these all have problems despite the brand and although not everyone who has a French door refrigerator with an in-the-door ice dispenser will have problems, these types of refrigerators have an inordinate amount of issues necessitating repair or replacement. We finally bought a French door refrigerator with the ice maker in the bottom and have no problems....See MoreSamsung French-Door fridge, anyone?
Comments (28)As I mentioned previously we have the Samsung with the ice/water dispenser in the door. Had it in our previous fridge and never had a repair in the 10+ years we owned it. With this new Samsung we have only had water drips down the door a couple times in the past 15 months. The key is to train family members to wait a second or two before removing the glass after stopping the water flow so that the last drops of water go in the glass. I did forget to mention in my previous response that when ice is made and drops into the storage bucket it makes a fair amount of noise. After a short while it just became another household noise that we barely notice. Guests will exclaim, "what was that?" but we just pretend we don't know what they are talking about. Try to make them think they are having an auditory hallucination! Even with the noisy ice dropping, we still like the ice and water in the door....See Morelascatx
