Our doorless shower, question
We're in the process of adding a new construction master bath to our new to us home. This is the best pic I have right now.
Plans were for this shower to be doorless. In the square will be a window. The shower measures 3x6ft.
I talked to the contractor and thought the handles would be on the wall to your left as you enter and the shower head would be on the opposite wall, the short wall closest to the "window". Maybe this was never a possibility, but today I realized that the handle to turn on as well as the water supply as coming from the short wall closest to the entrance.
Contractor states it makes sense not to have the water going in the direction of the opening, but t seems to me you'll have to stand >3 ft back to avoid being in the doorway. I was thinking you'd stand even with the "window" if it were on the other wall.
Is this a disaster? Worst comes to worst ill need a shower curtain I suppose?!

The plumbing is on the 3' wall to the left.

10 years agoI don't understand the problem. This is our basement bathroom. The controls are on the half wall. There is no door and we get very little water splashing out of the opening. (We have a piece of plexiglass above the half wall because we weren't sure whether we would need a door or not so just did that as a temporary measure until we order the glass.)

Comments (22)We have been able to use the walk in shower in our new house for about 2 weeks now; our shower is about 3.5 feet by 6 feet, and the side wall doesn't go all the way to the ceiling - there is about a 1.5 foot gap at the top. Yes, it's cool - we don't get the steamy enclosure experience that we had from our enclosed shower stall at our old house. On the other hand, it's easy to clean without a shower door, and it makes life easier if you ever have physical challenges like a broken leg or major leg surgery. Oh - if you haven't decided on a shower head, I *really* recommend the shower heads on the sliding bar (what are those called?). Dh is taller than I am; the adjustable head allows for the difference in height. I think the biggest thing people think about is when they step out of a walled shower or pull open the curtain and the cooler air outside of the shower hits your body that has just been under somewhat hot - hot water. Anyone would feel at least a little cold in that scenario. But when the shower is an open design, you don't get that blast of cool air hitting you making you feel cold. Our builder kept telling us that it would be cold without the door and wanted us to install a fan with a heater--we declined & are glad we did as it wasn't needed. Bob4321 - Our shower is 4x7, the bench is 12" deep leaving total floor space of 4x6. I would consider 4' to be the minimum width to shower comfortably if your showerhead(s) will be on the longer walls. In ours, the spray hits the floor just shy (~6-10") of the opposite wall. You can go narrower, but it will be a little tight. 5' wide would allow a wheel chair to turn around in the shower which is a nice feature (my parents have that in case one is needed as they age). @mydreamhome: I know we've communicated before on this topic but am always appreciative of the details you provide on your shower! A couple of follow-up questions: 1) Are you saying that a person won't be as susceptible to the change in ambient air temperature - when stepping out of the shower - because they are already exposed to it already in a doorless shower? 2) Noticed your hand & angled shower heads are mounted on 'width' side wall. Water would bounce between the 4' width, but does it ever go over the curb at the opposite 'short' side? - Ours is going to be 4'x6' (WxL) with a side entrance & no seat, so I am wondering if I should worry about water jumping the curb....See MoreFor those wondering if doorless showers are cold
Comments (8)Hi MrsPete- I can try to answer your questions with respect to our shower, but others should chime in as well. Our shower is not a rectangle; there is an angled pony wall on one side. I will link my ''reveal'' below so you can see what I mean. The narrow dimension is 48'', front to back on the longest side is 63'', the opening is 28'' and the pony wall is 29''. We have 8' ceilings. The bathroom itself is 7.5' x 11'. We do have under floor heating; it does not go under the shower. Our shower is on interior walls. The other thing that helps is that we have a great Panasonic fan/light/heater just adjacent to the shower. I turn that thing on right before I step into the shower and leave it on until after I towel off. We have had continued very cold weather here since I started this thread (in the low teens every night) and even I am somewhat surprised at how undrafty this shower is. 10 years agoI don't see why you can't have the shower head opposite the opening. Our shower is a bit larger than yours (4 by 7, I *think*), and we barely get any of the walls wet. Of course, it probably depends on the height/angle of your shower head...Ours is on a sliding bar - which is wonderful, btw - so we only keep it as high as necessary.
This is ours - if I can attach the picture correctly!
