thermador freedom or sub zero?

I'm really considering two options for 36" bottom mount built in fridge/freezer -- SUBZERO or THERMADOR

sz is attractive in reputation and energy usage. The price scares me.

I am debating getting a thermador freedom hinge series built in. It's a tiny kitchen. We don't have room to spare.

Any opinions? Advice?

They are both good and you will find opinions supporting either choice -- and criticizing either choice. Figure out what works best for you and your kitchen. I have Thermador and am very happy. I loved not having the grill across the top and the ergonomics of the interior -- especially not having the produce drawer sitting practically on the floor and the ice bin in the very bottom. If you are a foot shorter than I am and think a grill that says "look, I have a built-in fridge" is a good thing, you may be happier with the SZ.

Look at how you will use it, the space considerations, where you will put your most often used items and how convenient they are for you to get and put away. Take emotion out of it and look at function. If they still seem equal, go for the lower cost. That's my usual approach -- if it is function and I need it, I will pay for it, but all things being equal, I'd rather save some money.

The best thing to do is go see them in person and really compare them. Imagine your stuff in them. I prefer the shelves in the SZ. I haven't seen the bottom freezer Thermador--just the columns--does it have dual compressors? That's really worth getting the SZ for if not. The doorswing is better on the Therm.

I had a pair of Thermador Columns installed in December (30" Fridge, 30" Freezer). I love them. I had a hard time deciding between the above set vs. 27" pair from SubZero. So far, everything has worked perfectly and I'm very happy with my decision. My final deciding points were: For about 20% less money I could get 25% more storage. (The 27" SubZeros were about 25% more money compared to the 30"), and I had room for either. I LOVED the way the doors on the Thermadors swung fully to the outside of the fridge, rather than staying within the front of the fridge. Opening is so much wider feeling. As for now living with it, here are some thoughts on concerns others have brought up: I'm 5/2" and have no complaints about the top shelves. They are high, but I prefer that to stooping over for lower stuff. And the drawers are great! And I like the shallow shelves, with deeper door stuff because no more lost stuff in the back of the fridge. The doors hold ALL the condiment type stuff and the rest is wide open for large jugs of milk, juice, and everything else! One of the comments I get most when people look inside is: WOW, you can see EVERYTHING at a glance! It all seems to be at eye level and just item or two deep. No more hidden leftovers & stuff. The shelves are still deep enough to hold two gallons of milk, one in front of the other, as well as my big huge serving platter, cookie sheets, and pizza boxes. So no need for the shelves to be any deeper for me. I love the ice bucket location. Open the door and it's right at waist/chest level. Perfect. As I said before - no regrets so far!

Well, I have Wolf rangetop and ovens (couldn't do the low ovens of a range though I loved the look and counter space) but did Thermador columns. I didn't have room for more than 48" and had to push that a bit, but I also didn't like the location of the SZ ice maker. SZ also didn't have anything that looked like the Thermador then and I loved the look and raised ergonomics of the Thermador. I don't think you have a bad choice, although some folks have a strong dislike for Thermador burners and the cycling on and off on the super low simmer.

I understand it may be easier to fix, but does the problem still occur? " In Kalapointer's oven saga, it was at some point replaced with an M which they report here has chipped. "Well, I have waited since February 8th to have my M Pro double oven repaired. The enamel on the bottom of the oven was chipping and crazing." " Should an oven be able to handle self-cleaning mode, yes. But I can tell you from my experience many people have problems with their units after they've run self-cleaning mode (and this is across the board for modern brands), likely due to all the new microchips and electronics we use in modern ovens these days." Whether it is electronics or the blue enamel, if it doesn't work, don't promote it as a benefit and take it off until you get something that does work. "Coincidentally enough, I've never had a customer that experienced this chipping issue on Wolf ovens and I do sell quite a few. So I've not seen how it might arise yet the the real world. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened to these customers." No one knows how many have this problem except Wolf. From this forum, we know it has been ongoing for 10 years and some posters have had as many as 3 go bad not to mention one of the lawsuits mentioned a multiplicity of failures for one family. They were also talked into spending more money with Wolf to upgrade with the idea it would not occur and it still chipped. That has happened on this forum too. I feel if Wolf was sincere and it was truly a rare occurrence, they would upgrade the appliance at no additional cost for the inconvenience it causes and in at least one case someone cut their hand on the shards. I'm going with Thermador for the same reason as @Kelley Dockrey. I had Thermador columns in my previous house and never had a problem in 12 years. I wanted a Subzero this time because I'm going with a 36" over under and really like the layout of theirs but I won't wait over a year, especially when the company isn't up front about how long it will take. To answer your question, I think SZ is the only one that makes a built in 42" french door fridge.

My parents put in the Thermador 36' french door/bottom freezer unit when they remodeled 3 or 4 years ago and I have to say it looks fabulous (it is fully intergrated) and works well. I too am in the process of selecting what is now going to be a 36'combo and I am leaning toward the Thermador as I really like the interior configurations of this particular unit. If your kitchen is small, you may want to consider a french door option in general.

The Thermador does have dual compressors as well.

Sub doesn't offer a french door, so if space is a consideration, that might drive your decision. Flush integration is much nicer on the Thermador units, even with the new SZ BI series. The SZ's are still not as flush as they could be, and need about 1/2 extra depth in your cabinetry to get as flush mounted as they can.

Best thing to do is to go into a dealer and play around with the bins and shelving. That's what you'll be using everyday for the time you own that fridge.

Keep in mind, if you don't have someone in your area very familiar with the installation of the Thermador unit, it could be costly. Definetely not as streamlined for install as the subzero, much more reliant on the cabinets being perfectly level and square.
