Need ideas, and extra-extra long drawer glides

There's an odd floor-to-ceiling space at the end of our bathtub. It's 18" wide, and 38" deep.

I could slip an 18" untility cabinet in there and call it good, but we'd like to use all the space. There's plenty of room for 32", or deeper, drawers to pull forward. That means we have to build/modify cabinets, shelves, drawers, etc.

I'd like to have a base pull-out cabinet, to use as a double laundry hamper, topped with full-extension pull-out drawers all the way up to the standard 84"(?) height.

Do you know any company that sells drawer glides that are longer than 21" inches? I'd love to use at least 32" of the space's depth.

Here's the space "in progress." We moved the plumbing around and love the new layout, except for this narrow cubby-hole.

Temporary solution I'm using this small cabinet, borrowed from the basement guest bedroom, in the cubby-hole for now. I want a much taller cabinet, with all drawers above the base hamper area. It will be either white, or black, or white drawer fronts with a black frame.

Do you know if there are 32"-plus long drawer glides made? Any ideas, suggestions, directions, or links would be greatly appreciated!

I use long KV slides all the time, they have slides up to 28" long in most weight classes.

Longer lengths are available, but the expense goes up exponentially.

Top of my head numbers:

KV 8400's are full-length 100# slides and are available up to 28" long.

KV8405's are overtravel slides (full length plus 1"), 100#, and also go to 28".

KV6505 slides are 125# overtravel slides and go to 28".

KV8500 slides are 150# slides.

I use a lot of 84XX series slides. The "00" suffix, as in 8500, is full length, XX05 is overtravel, there are a couple of others, I think an XX17 and an XX19, one is self-closing, the other might be push-to-open. I'm not sure.

Only a couple of times have I use the Big Kahuna KV slides, the 8900's, they are 500# slides and go to 60" in length. Very expensive though. In the neighborhood of $100 for the shorties and upwards of $300 a pair for the longer ones.

All the others I mentioned are $10-$15 a pair.

A good source is WoodworkersHardware.com, they have a good selection but sometimes when ordering only a couple pair their packaging can be wacky. Four slides in a huge box, for example. Very good customer service.

I don't see any 8500's listed, they are 150# slides.

For your application, when balancing access versus cost, the 28" KV 8405's would be my recommendation. You can still build a 32" deep drawer, with the overtravel you'll only have a couple of inches of drawer in the carcass at full extension.

Make sure your lower slide-outs don't whack the toilet.

Need extra-long tension rod

Would it be possible to make your own custom ceiling rod with pipes and fittings from a hardware or big box home store? I'm thinking a couple of threaded ceiling plates, a five or six inch piece of pipe coming down vertically from the ceiling (or whatever you need to accommodate the different ceiling heights--one side could be one inch, the other five inches), one horizontal 98 inch piece of pipe and 90 degree connecting pipes to put the pieces together. Really, I'm envisioning a typical ceiling rod with extension pieces coming from the ceiling connection. The pipe could be painted or whatever. That rod seems a bit unstable to me. You might buy it and try it out though.

I love my new double bin trash pullout. It solved 2 problems: 1. My first problem was with one of my dog's - Mocha. He is sort of a brainiac, and over the years has learned how to step on the trash bin pedal to open it up, and then search for "snacks". Heck, he's the reason I didn't get one of those foot pedals for water for the sink. There's no way he can figure out the trash pullout unless he decides to use his teeth on the pull. And he's getting old enough now that his teeth shouldn't be that strong anymore! ;) 2. The second problem was with my husband. It is a war to get him to take the trash out unless it's nearly overflowing - or they simply can't cram anything else into the bin. I swear they would walk a mile around a pile of trash before they would take it outside. Our outside trash is far enough away that it's a pain, but he should really just do it on his way out the door in the morning. The problem with that is, it's nearly overflowing by nightfall or after dinner. Now with 2 bins in the pullout, I can at least tie up the full bag so that no one else can try to cram anything else into it. There is a second one there for them to start on. Mocha is also bewildered where his snack bin has gone to.

maidielou - I just finished all my cabinetry hardware. I definitely mixed finishes and styles (thanks to many forum members' input including sabjmata!) - the widest drawer bank I have is 27" and I did 12" pulls on them. My hardware is a mix of RK International and Schaub, in polished nickel and ORB. Top Knobs and Schaub have 8" pulls as well, if you wanted to check those out.
