Anyone dealing with the effects of PCOS?

By this I mean skin issues, facial hair...you know...the stuff that makes you feel oh so pretty! :0p

I had bought a kit...gosh, I wish I could remember the woman's name...well, I guess she's a very well known dermatologist, at Bath & Body Works. Well it made my skin issues SOOOOOO much worse. I tried it for 3 weeks thinking maybe it gets worse before it gets better. Wrong!

Since then I've tried other things. I had success with the Neutrogena facial wipes, but due to cost I went with Stridex this last time around. The active ingredients are the same, so why do I feel like it's not working as well?

Hard to tell if anything really helps, or if it is totally dependent on the syndrome.

What exactly is the skin issue...acne? Facial hair? Or?

I'm referring to skin in this thread (although facial hair, weight gain, and baldness are also issues...like I said, sure makes me feel pretty!!!). Acne is one of the problems associated with PCOS and I'm wondering if there's any otc product someone might be having success with.

Ben Oldag, a retired ag extension agent, was a long-time Am radio garden question answerer for many years, and he helped listeners like me a lot. He went to work for Cedarcide after being sponsored by them for a long time.I trusted their products both because of Ben's many words about their products, as well as some personal use. However, the dog/animal bug(flea) deterrent sprayed directly on a large, healthy dog caused him to eventually have a negative reaction. With the emulsifier making the product water soluble, any outdoor spray residue will just wash away during rain. The sweet aroma will too soon dissipate even when dry. The cedar may not be the silver bullet that effectively stops the vampire-like stinkers from enjoying your fruit. On the other hand, when strolling around checking your fruit, a handy bottle of blue ammonia glass cleaner will quickly destroy a herd of orange-colored juvenile leaf footed hoppers sitting together on a fruit. You can spray water after a minute if you want to rinse off the stinky blue poison. The mature l.f. hoppers take longer than 10 seconds to kill like the babies...more like a minute.

We moved into this neighborhood a little over a year ago. One neighbor takes great pride in her yard, but is an avid chemical user. She also waters nearly every day, mows her grass nearly to the ground, etc. Though she had a "let me show you the right way" attitude with us at first, we have merely led by example. I'm sure she wonders why our grass remains so green and healthy when we never water it. She has asked me what we do about the hoards of Japanese Beetles, and I had to tell her that we don't have any.....that they all go to her house for her roses, purple leaf plums, etc. She now comes over to pick our brains! I haven't seen the Chemlawn truck over there for months! Next, I'll give her some pruning lessons, lol!

Anyone else dealing with Snails???

Yes, I have had a terrible time with snails in the past. This year hasn't been bad so far, but the ones I have are many times over and inch in dimaeter. They shread my gingers and the softer Agaves like my "Joe Hoaks" I couldn't keep a Joe Hoak in a saleable condition in both 06 and 07. Right after a good rain they would come out in the ealry evening and I would go out on the stomping patrol and take out 100 each night as a goal. After about 10 times of that, the number reduced and this year I am seeing my stomping has paid off. I also know they eat up Philodendrons and they probably like the other Aroids as well. They also eat a lot of things in the garden, but I haven't had a garden since the hurricanes dropped a big tree on my square foot garden plots about 3 years ago and haven't had to worry about that.

Andrew, I'm sure there are others with better advice than me, but I live in an area where temps regularly hit 100+ in the summer - although it's usually very dry. My plumeria seem to do best in a location where they get morning sun and afternoon shade, or under a partial canopy, so they get a decent amount of filtered light. I also have them in "insulated" pots - I leave them in the black nursery pot, but place that pot inside a bigger pot (usually fired ceramic or fiberglass with drainage holes), and "pad" the space between the two pots (sides and bottom) with mulch. I haven't lost a plant yet (knock on wood), and they seem pretty happy.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Here is a link. It can cause thinning hair, acne, irregular periods, and facial hair in women.

I would think that acne is acne and should repsond to the usual acne treatments. I have good success with Retin A but everyone is different.

Go to a bookstore and find the book The Skin Type Solution by Leslie Baumann. There is a questionaire to fill out which will tell you your skin type. Based on that, then you can find products that will work for your skin. It works! I had bought a trial size of some very expensive facial products for my sensitive skin that absolutely destroyed it. Turns out a couple of the ingredients were no-nos for my particular skin. I was able to find a line from Walgreens that so far is agreeing with my skin very well. Plus, since I have a skin type that isn't prone to wrinkles, I can avoid all those pricy anti-wrinkle products and procedures. And my skin type doesn't take well to facials and exfoliation, so I can skip spending money on those.

She lists products for use that are of all price ranges, from drugstore brands to stuff available at high end department stores. You will save so much money by buying this book since you won't be purchasing products that aren't going to work for you or could do more harm than good.
