Good shampoo for oily hair - preferably fragrance free or fruit

I'm trying to find a good shampoo for my husband's oily hair. His hair is so oily, that although he washes it every morning, he gets big oil stains on the pillowcases (and would stain the couch if I didn't have a cloth over where his head is). He uses suave shampoo - not one that is for oily hair. I'm pretty sure he could be reducing the oiliness of his head- if he'd use the right product. I use suave shampoo - and I have very dry hair and skin and it doesn't dry my hair out at all.

My husband doesn't want too many chemicals - and I'm allergic to most fragrances (except some fruit smells). So we're trying to find a product that will cut down on his oil, without irritating my asthma or irritating his scalp.

Any ideas? Or any more natural, mild solutions. His oiliness is just getting worse and worse.

Sounds like something like Head and Shoulders would be good for him to try. Both my husband and I use it,and we both have oily hair.
Although,your husband sounds like he COULD have SEBORRHEA,or Seborrheic Dermatitis.

SEBORRHEA: a common skin disorder that can be easily treated.Seborrhea is excessive oiliness of the skin,especially of the scalp and face,without redness or scaling.Patients with Seborrhea may later develop Seborrheic Dermatitis (oiliness accompanied by redness,or scaling,itchy rash)

Treatment:Non-prescription shampoos containing tar,(Neutragena T-gel is a good one),zinc (head and shoulders),
pyrithione,selenium sulfide,ketoconazole,and/or salicylic acid.
Or a dermatologist may give a prescription shampoo,cream gel,or foam.Mild corticosteriod creams and lotions or anti-fungal topicals such as ciclopirox.

Do not even think of letting him use Head and Shoulders if you have fragrance allergies. I do too, and I made the mistake of buying my son some of the oily hair formula. My head was throbbing before he finish his shower, the smell of the shampoo permeated the entire house. Yuck! A lot of the dandruff shampoos make oily hair worse, my son has had a problem with this for years. I also have the same oily hair problem. Because of my allergies I can only use Magic Botanicals Oil Free Shampoo. It is very mild with no fragrance added. I do have to wash my hair daily or is gets oily by midday of day 2, but I can live with that. My son just recently started using Rusk Sensories Purify Shampoo. It has tea tree oil. It is suppose to be good for people who have oily hair and scalp. It seems to be working very well for my son, and does not bother my allergies. It has a very mild fragrance, I would not use it because I can smell a fruity, minty smell, but I don't notice any smell in the bath or on my son after he showers. I get it at Meijers, I have not looked anywhere else for it. This would probably work good for your husband. The Magic Botanicals I use is from Whole Foods or the Internet. They each cost about $10 a bottle.

I think that older people tend to bathe/shower less often because their skin is thinner and more sensitive... I can attest to that. My mother's skin was so paper thin and lacking in elasticity, there were multiple times her forearm skin would literally tear from dabbing with a towel. Multitude of reasons; aging, medications, forgetting to keep hydrated by drinking water, etc. etc. But I digress... My hair gets fully washed at night, then rinsed in a.m. so I can dry/style. So twice daily it's wet. (Summer more). My skin/hair needs moisture (don't drink enough water, I know that). Oily is clear on the other end of the spectrum. My concern was stress (death of my mom); age (hormone shift); regular coloring & twice daily rinsing is all taking a toll. I'm on my 4th night of Sally's 'wen' like product. First night, wow, hair was like pure silk when rinsed. Next morning, fluffy, full, oh so soft and shiny. Day 2, not so much. (But I blew it the night before by putting a small amount of oil on my scalp, ran through my hair, let dry before bed. The oil is helping, but too many nights in a row is too much.) The next night I skipped the oil, did the Sally condition clean, next morning my hair didn't feel as nice. (I used product on low end of amounts suggested as an experiment.) Last night I used Sally's, increased amount I used, then when out of shower put oil on again, and when I woke up this morning I did my usual rinse before drying/styling, only this time I put a dime size amount of Sally's product on my hair, massaged in and rinsed. Much better. It's fluffy, soft, shiny & silky clear to the ends and it swings ;) (I have no styling products in it, but it sure looks like I do.) Guess I'll have to fine tune the routine. But figure I'm saving a lot of wear 'n tear on my hair with a less harsh shampoo, no styling products, oil for added moisture a few nights a week. Oh, and something I should have done long ago was get one of those mega wide tooth combs for combing the product in the shower. I got Sally's "Beach comb" set. One for in the shower, one for when I get out. That also saves a lot of wear and tear over a regular comb or nylon (non-bristle) brush. We'll see how it goes, but just after a few days it's a lot less dry looking.

I use Mane & Tail shampoo & conditioner on my dogs. It's got a pleasent smell, but not too perfume-y. It also leaves them feeling sooooo soft! I'm another who only bathes my dogs maybe 4 or 5 times a year. I have a long haired St. Bernard & a beagle/cocker spanial mix. Neither of them get stinky unless they roll in something, which doesn't happen often since they have a fenced-in backyard to play in while outside. I used to bathe my SB frequently b/c of his long hair, but found that it irritated his skin. Now, I brush when needed & of course towel dry when he's been in the rain. I clean my dog's ears frequently b/c they can get stinky if left alone, but bathing is limited to summer time (May or June to Sept. or Oct.) and only a few times at that. I also shave my SB during the summer b/c of his intolerance to heat, so this helps renew his coat & keeps him smelling good! :)

My hair fits the profile here. Curly, thick, and frizzy in humidity. I used to try to straighten it but embraced the curls at one point in my life and never looked back. It is what it is. I think the thing I dislike most about my hair is it is completely unpredictable whether it will look great one day or terrible the next day. I do my best. As others have mentioned, a great cut is key--someone who is skilled at cutting layers. That keeps me going to the salon at least every 4-6 weeks (expensive!). I've settled on a mixture of a Regis mousse for hold and It's a 10!, the latter recommended by my stylist. Its available at Walgreens and the like, and it gives shine and manageability. I can't use it alone, however, because it doesn't give the hold I need. The combination is working well. I let my hair mostly dry then scrunch it with a diffuser, and use a curling iron to define a few curls and bangs around my face.

I care to the extent that I want something that really does add a difference to my hair. And, if I am going to buy an expensive bottle, I want to know that there is actually some reason that it is the expensvie one on the shelf, and what that reason is and why it is. With all the bogus claims it is hard to determine what really is quality. I find that most of stuff at the store offers no different results one from another. Among those choices I see no reason to buy the more expensive one. LIke you, TVet, I look for one without a strong scent. That is also hard to find . I am willing to pay for something that has some benefit, but I want to know more about it. And, I want to know what I am paying for. For all I know, it could be the same darned thing in the bottle from Walmart that is in the expensive salon one. Just trying to be an informed consumer and determine just what really is a quality product before I plop down up to fifty bucks for a bottle of keratin shampoo, or even twenty bucks. You are right about keratin . It is an animal product . From what I read, there is plant based version of the nature that you explained. One article that I read did discuss phytokeratin and how it was not the real deal, yet is added to some products as if it were. That is one thing that I know now that I did not know before I decided to care about what is in that bottle. That, right there, is part of what I am trying to be more informed about. With phytokeratin it is a bogus claim, really. And I am trying to weed out those bogus claims. I did not know any of this until I started to investigate it. At least I know a little about this issue now. I took time to read the sides of any number of bottles at the speciality shops and at the Walmart and had many questions. Once you find your keratin product there are many nuances of how it is used, how long it takes to make a dfference and exactly how does it make a difference in the strand of hair, in the cuticles of the hair.

Excessive oily hair as she is describing though (oil stains on pillows and couch) is not a problem that is going to just go away without the help of a dermatologist.
It could even be a hormonal imbalance of some sort.(too much testosterone maybe)
While Head and shoulders IS one recommended therapy,I did mention many others as well.
Before trying anything she may want her husband to see a dermatologist who will skillfully be able to suggest something that doesnt aggravate her allergies.
The information I provided was from an actual pamphlet I got from the dermatologist as my husband has the same problem.

My dermatologist and plasticgardens obviously feel very differently about this topic. My son and I both have dermatitis. He has tried every over the counter dandruff shampoo to no avail. Until he switched to a mild shampoo without harsh chemicals his condition did not improve. Since switching to this shampoo he can go 2 days without washing his hair and the redness and flaking has dramatically decreased. I'm hoping the flaking will go away completely with time (he has only been using this for 3 weeks).

Anyhow, our dermatologist said, use a mild shampoo with minimal chemicals and little to no fragrance added (perfume can irritate the scalp). Use conditioner only on the ends if at all. He said that harsh shampoos strip oil out of the hair and scalp, which looks good at first but causes the scalp to secrete even more oil to replace what was stripped away. So the best thing to do is use a very mild formula that will rinse out excess oil but not strip the hair and scalp. The oil production should slow down once your scalp adjusts to the shampoo. Seems to be working for us. And he recommended Cetaphil cleanser for the skin. I have been using this for 6 months (I was afraid it would make my skin oilier because it seems very rich) and I have not had a flair up of acne or rosacea in 4 months.

plasticgardens and Jcrowley - thanks for your responses. It's very interesting to consider that the oil could be a manifestation of sebhorrea. I am not aware that my husband has that, but my 8yo daughter does. We use a dandruff shampoo for her, but I was allergic to head and shoulders and neutrogena. We're using the CVS generic (like Tfal). It helps her (she's not oily, though, she's dry like me) and it doesn't bother my asthma.

I passed on these recommendations and my husband made an appointment with a dermatologist - which is a good step bc. before he just didn't consider this a problem. And I think such excessive oiliness is a problem. Maybe it's hormonal, or who knows what else. I can't wait to hear what the dermatologist says - I'm sure she won't say your hair's oily - don't do anything but accept it.

And now I know about more products to try later.
